The Gap is a window into different lives and different generations. Two people, of vastly different ages, discuss a shared experience that impacted their lives, how it affected them and how they dealt with it to ultimately emerge stronger.
In this episode of The Gap, Noel, a former bank robber, sits down with Cornai, a former drug dealer, to talk about their lives as criminals. Through their conversation we learn about the way in which both men protected themselves from violence, the things that kept them sane behind bars, and the opportunities that gave them a second chance.

It’s only natural for a person that’s filled with pain and hate, to feel as if their on the top of the world when they have the power to change it. This is why power in the wrong hands can spiral down into all sorts of violence. I mean, look George Soros. The guy stated that his character was made when he spent his time in Auschwitz, and the guy’s a BILLIONAIRE. That’s kinda scary.

yes, I think a lot of criminals have good in their hearts they are just very poor or desperate. Like in very poor areas, if a dad cannot find a job and is very poor, and if they have kids and need to provide for them some parents will do anything for them. Sometimes its a drug addiction and their not bad people but rather they are so addicted they need more money for the drug and they are so desperate. My cousin is in prison for burglary he would have a gun when he broke into a house, but never would have the gun be loaded cause he never wanted to hurt anyone, he just wanted items to sell for money to get him drugs which he had been addicted for 20 years so im not trying to defend his actions. Yeah he's a good person in heart just drugs made do bad things

The bullying thing reminded me of my dad. He didn't carry a gun, but when he was a kid he spoke with a stutter. He was a highly intelligent kid, but when the other kids said something nasty or smart about him, he'd try to retort but he couldn't get the words out & they'd mock him worse. He learned to box, and he found that since he couldn't speak eloquently it was usually easier to just hit people, knock 'em out. When he went into the RAF he got on the boxing team at RAF Cosford, which used to be the RAF's athletics and sports centre. Luckily he learned a trade in the RAF, and he cured his stutter to the extent that he was able to represent himself in court for small claims cases, but he was always a fighter right up until he was old & decrepit, always ready to throw hands. I guess he was addicted to that violence - it was his go-to for most of his life.

@@Dah42 Thats why you are catholic. This sentence is kind of describing the new testament. Its clear you didnt read the bible or you didnt understood it. This comes from a catholic-raised polish guy and you know we polish people take catholicism for real. I took it for real, too, till the day I finally read the bible and understood that catholicism is simply wrong and mostly unbiblical. For example commands the new testament the church leaders (pastors, etc.) to be married and forbids women to be the leaders in church. This example concludes clearly that catholicism and "modern protestants" are wrong. Theres no to ways about it. If you are literate and have the will to find the truth for yourself than read the bible!

Makes me wonder that if we're just going to drive these people to suicide (which happens a lot for people who leave prison) then why did we get rid of capital punishment in the first place? (UK)

Prisons are seen more as a punishment to criminals than to be rehabilitating them. (I learned way more about this watching Orange is the New Black). It also stems from the prison reform and war on drugs in the 90's where it had become a staple of punishment even more into the more modern era. Kevin Hart when talking about his uncle getting out of prison, that when you get out from being in prison, your mind is in prison mode. What you think is that prison mindset so when we have people comig out with that mindset being punishment instead of rehabilitation. Its hard. It also doesnt help that the legal system had been made so unfair that former president Barack Obama had been known to find people and give pardons to them for reasons that shouldve been fixed. More effort needs to be placed in our criminal justice system and prison rehabilitation

THIS is moug me duro If it were possible to prevent criminals from offending again after they leave prison (thereby reducing overall crime rates), wouldn’t you want prisons to be taking that approach? Beat the shit out of a kiddie diddler got put in for 2 years for that assault now because he can't pay court fines because no one wants to hire a felon so he's going back for being poor essentially. @Eric Miret I forgot to add. Importantly. The whole world was affected by Europe's colonial and industrial era that will have socio-economic impact (some good, most negative, of course) for decades or maybe even hundreds of years to come. The effects are ecological, cultural, sociological and therefore psychological, etc. Europe was and is great in some regards, but your life or education has clearly sheltered you from truly understanding the matter of how the West's growth aversely affected the majority of the globe. Syria included.
@rumble1925
@rumble1925 4 жыл бұрын
@Eric Miret What the fuck are you talking about? The grenades are coming in from old Yugoslavian military shit. Syrian immigrants have nothing to do with shootings and the grenades... it's a drug war that is raging in poor areas by people that have lived here their entire lives. In large parts it is happening because shitty neoliberal politics have driven what used to be poorer areas into real poverty stricken shitholes and the swedish police haven't been able to curb what used to be rowdy youth gangs that sold weed early on until they turned into real organised criminal enterprises. Syrians? Fucking kidding me... this is 100% a problem that has been ramping up since the the mid 00's. I was on the sidelines looking in when this shit started, had old friends who got started in this ugly shit when OG's like the biker gangs and yugoslavs offered to supply them with cocaine and ecstacy.
@rumble1925
@rumble1925 4 жыл бұрын
@Eric Miret Syrian immigration has probably increased petty crimes, yes. The other stuff is what I said, a drug war between organised criminals. If you want to pin it on immigrants, it's second generation immigrants like myself, not syrians. You're spouting political nonsense from SD. The real problems are societal, both the immigrant community itself and the swedish state has failed these areas. The slide to poverty of the immigrant working class is real and has been devastating these past 15-20 years.

You act like crime hasn't been glorified in movies anyway. Everything's been glorified in movies, drug addiction used to be glorified in movies, hating gays used to be glorified. Even to this day, the military is glorified. It just depends on the culture and what's considered important in that culture.

"Me and education never got along" Imagine what would have happened if this kid had a teacher with a passion for educating, who was able to notice this and take the time to find the "in" with the kid, to find a way to make education fun for him. What would this kid be talking about now? I keep saying, everything's important, society, upbringing, social media... But education. Teaching children to love educating themselves, to have fun, to seek knowledge. It's a drug. And it changes everything.
@weareallbornmad410
@weareallbornmad410 3 жыл бұрын
That's true, but you can't really put the responsibility of addressing societal problems on "passionate teachers." There needs to be a system that "takes the time to find an "in"" with troubled kids and pays attention to their existence. It also wouldn't hurt to have a system that allows teachers to be easily passionate, instead of grounding them down with overcrowded classes and humiliatingly little pay.
@Davey656
@Davey656 2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with this and the response from We are all born mad. I'm relatively young still (29) and I had a few good teachers over the years that I could interact with and they just opened up my mind to a love of education, learning and knowledge. When you think how many teachers an average child has, for me 12 teachers over primary education and in secondary 7 years, 16 or so subjects, teacher rotation every year, plus in 6th form we travelled, so a considerably high number of teachers. and yet I can only think of 2 primary teachers and 3 secondary teachers I truly respected and enjoyed learning with. It's sad to think how under supported our education system is. What's on the curriculum needs huge reform. The quality of teaching staff needs to be higher, and it needs to be paid better to reflect/encourage that higher quality. You will rarely have good staff if they are underpaid, the stress of bills, home life will all inflict on the precious time they have to teach.
