The day started trying to repair a big field drain outlet pipe but it wasn't long before I needed the old Ford 801 Power master to come save the day. The dump truck was stuck in the mud before I ever got on today's job site to fix a culvert pipe.

If you have a backhoe you will always need a hand shovel to go with it! I have one little story to tell. I too was moving what I call junk dirt (not good for anything) to back in a field out of the way. I thought I could make it to where I needed to dump, but that did not happen. With the truck stuck I had no trailer to go get the tractor to pull it out. I tried everything, hand shoveling, any stones I could find, tree branches, logs, a chain in the ruts, nothing worked. After hours trying and trying, I ended up dumping where it was (knowing I have to be back) and freed the truck by hand shoveling. Waste of a day! And so it goes! I do so enjoy your content, thanks for posting!

Oh man, that sounds like a real bummer of a day Richard! But, you remember it easily so we can at least call it "memorable"! I hate days like that though. Thanks for sharing and you're right about that shovel - I keep it right there in the backhoe at all times!!

I got hired to replace a water line, street to building. The old water line was degraded galvanized pipe, and was under the concrete driveway, so I chose a revised route. The facility manager gave me a map of the irrigation system, and had a private utility locator identify the location of the private utilities. I ended up replacing about 60" of irrigation pipe, repairing a half dozen 2" trunk pipes, a sprinkler control wire, and a couple of 1 1/2" trunks. Then, the gas line was so rusted that, when bumped during water line installation, that the pipe broke off at ground level. So, the water line installation included gas line repair. I could go on, however suffice to say a "simple" water line replacement took twice as long and included several unanticipated supporting jobs. And, as a reminder, all of utilities were marked, and the irrigation system was mapped. Too bad the map was so far from reality. This begat that, which begat that, which...

I had several tandem loads of gravel delivered and spread on my 1300' driveway. The second load, the driver backed up too far and got stuck in my yard and had to dump 19 tons in my yard to get out. I had to spread it with my FEL and fix his tire ruts, similar to what u had to do. Good times! I told the driver that he was lucky I had a tractor/loader/box blade!

An old neighbor of mine growing up had one of those old Ford 8Ns. Only drove it once to help out getting a fence put up. Good tractor, but wish when he moved we had a place and use for it because I think we'd have taken it in. I'd only imagine how difficult that ditch would be to mow if doing it with a trimmer.

Had a deal like this a little while ago. Old clay pipes settling and a silted up ditch caused a backup in my friends perimeter drains. No builder level or laser level so I used a torpedo level on a shovel as my station and a friend holding a tape measure as a receiver. Turns out there was over 1/3 inch per foot of fall originally so we re-graded the pipe out to 1/4 inch per foot and it works like a dream

Watching you pull the dump truck out with the tractor reminded me of when our yard was being finished by an excavating business. He hauled 46 total triaxle loads in for fill and topsoil. One day he hauled 4 loads, backed into the yard dumped and pulled out without issue, the 5th load he sunk to the axle. The only person I knew that could possibly get him out was a nearby farmer with a HUGE Massey Ferguson dual rear wheel tractor with 4 wheel drive. It took awhile to find a chain that would do the job. The tractor had rear wheels in the yard and front wheels on the blacktop township road. Those front tires actually wrinkled the blacktop, saw it with my own eyes. The farmer got him out. He said it was the first time he ever seen smoke come out his stack from a load. It was truly impressive.

Curiously, I’ve gained a reputation for being a master at creating new projects in the midst of completing the first. For me, listing the lineage of any given project is like reading the “begats’ in the book of Genesis! Here’s a simple example… My wife hated our electric heat pump. It is a combo heat and air unit located behind the house. First off… The air conditioning was noisy. Although we heat primarily with a central heat wood fireplace… from time to time we still used the heat pump in the wintertime. She said the air it put out froze her toes. So, we decided to replace it with a propane unit. (The seed project.) So, replacement of the unit begat installation of a tank. Because we didn’t want it visible from the front… and we didn’t want it to block our view of the deer feeder… it ended up being hidden beside my shop. That begat burying 170’ of PEX tubing. No problem, I have a baby backhoe that won’t tear up the yard too badly…. Except, the line has to run between two massive oak trees that already have a septic feeder buried there. I don’t want to tear up any new soil because it will kill the trees… they are 8’ from the house. At about 16 feet is a sump drain to carry rain water away from the house. It lies just to the side of the septic drain pipe… I have to put the PEX above them: That begats removing the stepping stone walkway and hand shoveling through rock , roots and packed clay. Along the trench a bit further is the driveway that goes to my barn. I have to trench across it. However, the propane company wants to set the tank, install the PEX, hookup the regulators snd pressure test the lines all in the same trip. That begats putting in a 2” conduit beneath the driveway so that the PEX can pass under it. The reason why? Well, the shop is in the way. He can’t set the tank without driving over the trench. So, I lay it, backfill and pack it in. All set? Not quite…. A rarely known concept enters into the picture. It is technically called “Project Scope Creep”. You see, ever since we moved into this “Total Electric Home” In 1987, my former professional breakfast chef / pie baker wife, has loathed her electric range. She insists that the propane line tee off and include a hookup for a replacement gas range. That begats several smaller plumbing and electrical projects…. That I’d rather forget. While digging the trench for the propane line, I decided that I might be able to save the sod for replacement back into the trench. Neil, as you know, a backhoe can peel sod into nice little rectangles. However in rocky soil it is not easy enough to get them all the same thickness. That brilliant decision later begat a whole day of packing the trench to varying depths and fitting 150’ of sod chunks into place. But, before we even bury the gas line… I too succumbed to scope creep. You see, my shop is heated by a wood stove…. I’m trenching for a propane tank the required 10’ from my shop wall…. Can you blame me for begatting the urge to install a propane line for “provisional heat” in the shop? OK… this is getting long… the project started in May… how about if I just tell you where we are at now? The tank is installed. The PEX is installed. Plumbing is complete to the heat and air unit and range. Both of those are installed and tested. (The first pie was Blueberry… my fave!) Shop plumbing is stubbed out inside the wall. The trenches are back filled and the sod came back just fine. My 8yr old grandson reset all of the stepping stones across the trench by himself. (The perfection of their placement has nothing to do with spacing or level!) What remains on the punch list? Finding and installing a propane heater for my shop. Touch up caulk and paint around the sheet metal doghouse connecting the heat air unit to the house. New kitchen cabinets that match the pie baking range… scope creep run amok! (This is currently underway and is already spiraling into its own galaxy of begats!) As I said, Neil… there is no such thing as “The project at hand”… there is only a seed project or one of its hundred begats! Don’t get me started on the tree removal project on the other end of the house… we are 5years into that galaxy swinging back into equilibrium! Well sir, enough said… I have a few begats to work on. Thanks for the break to enjoy your begats!

Oh boy. You just described much of my homeowner's experience from the last 20 years. For me, taking on a "fixer upper" when I was 21 seemed like an easy and enthusiastically anticipated project. Nobody ever told me that the "fixin' up" would never be completed and that whatever I got done would just begat the next thing in line! I've been at it for over 23 years here now! But, it is a labor of love. Just like what you've described in all of you projects turned projects. Mr. SV, you give me peace knowing I'm not the only one! The projects just keep stacking but I begrudgingly refuse to pay someone else to do what I think I can do myself. I don't see it changing anytime soon either. At least all of us same types have discovered a way of finding each other and can share in our victories and shortfalls here on the KZfaqs! I still got some catching up to do over on your channel but I did notice a new SV logo and one particular pole that you adjusted a few extra times with the little K-bota :) I saw that on my TV one late night and wasn't able to comment but I felt your pain. At least that was an easy fix. Thanks as always for your comments and support. See ya soon!

One job leads to another is so true! Bought an old JD 855 with loader and backhoe for some jobs around the house. Going to redo a culvert pipe that is heaving the driveway then pull-up the driveway to redo with stone then asphalt. Next few projects will be redo a retaining wall, fill a sink hole, grade for a patio and eventually dig a foundation for a multi-story shop. First things first, I’ve been working on the JD 855 to bring is back to good working order. Happened upon you channel for the hydraulic pressure relief valve for you JD 755 and have been hooked on your videos ever since. Really like your work ethic and family values. I always go into to project with a timeline. If you have watched any of my videos, my son is usually helping me. He always asks, "Dad how long will this take?" I will give my best guess, because like any man, everything is a race against an imaginary clock or GPS prediction. Then he says, "So really more like ___." and doubles my estimate. Then I have to quote the legendary Bullwinkle (in voice).....Rocky- "that trick never works"....Bullwinkle - "This time for sure!" Sometimes I nail it and even come in under my estimate....if you don't include the other projects my mishaps create! Keep it up. Drain tile jobs suck but I actually really enjoy them. We had to fix my friends septic drain field at the beginning of April this year, then my own the first weekend in may. He needed new lids put on his tank too, his job was a 2 weekend project, and mine we got lucky and just had to hand dig. I used the little ls 122 that I have and just trenched it out with the front end loader at his house, and it made a mess, but also worked out really well cause it gave us working room that came in really handy. Looked like you had a ton of fun anyway!

Oh yeah, I really enjoy the tile and drain work as well. It's amazing what you sometimes find and get into when doing this kinda stuff. Sounds like you've had your experiences too! I enjoyed seeing that new F250 of yours. What a cherry of a find man! Thanks so much for watching and sharing. I need more viewers like you! :)

You really do a nice job on your videos. Last year I put in about 300’ of French drain. Looks way easier than it is! I still have another 200’ to put in but I need the ground to dry up again. Been really wet in North Central WI.

Neil, your attention to detail in the editing process is very good...... is that something that comes naturally or did you have to "work"on that skill?
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot. I've been working to refine it for a couple of years now. I didn't do any editing before the youtube channels so I guess it is a learned skill but I do attribute some of it to maybe being slightly naturally artistic. Thanks for watching!!!

Seems like I RARELY ever find myself working on what I intended on working on!! I have a 500 acre pine and cotton plantation. My brother lives directly across the road from me on 85 acres. My wife wants to know why there always seems to be more stuff needing done on his 85 acres than needs doing on our 500 acres. My typical response; “he’s my brother….and he needs my help….” Great job with the drone aerial footage. Mind telling me what model drone you have? Thanks.
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy 2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the remarks Audry. Yeah, my wife is of the same mindset. Seems like her list is the last to get done but I never mean it to be that way :) I use a Mavic Mini drone from DJI. I love it and it does a great job for no bigger than what it is. Thanks for watching.

Good job doing what you could with what you had. I do think the pipe didn't look like it sunk - more that the ditch hasn't been maintained and has silted in raising the water level. Unfortunately that's a more expensive and time consuming project - if you even were allowed to do it. Some places object to homeowners maintaining the town/county/state ditches.
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. More than likely this silted in quite a bit too. I should have mentioned that was probably a contributor. Believe it or not the county dipped this ditch only months before we did this tile work. We had hoped they would get a lot more muck out of the bottom but they didn't seem to go very deep with it. This was our easiest alternative. Thanks for watching!
