[OLD] How should you build Grundstok Thunderers for your Kharadron Overlords army?

Should you build rifles or the other weapons? That is one of the big questions asked by every new Kharadron Overlords player, and one hopefully you'll be able to answer for yourself after watching this video!
In this I explain the different options for building Grundstok Thunderers, the weapon options, gunnery sergeant and standard bearer. I go through the pros and cons of the different options, take a look at the math hammer and how the weapons can synergise with the rest of your army, battalions and skyports.
If that's not enough to help you decide what's right for you, don't worry because I also take a look at some typical unit constructions, with examples. Plus I've got some tips on magnetising, and some suggested build routes for unit constructions to maximise flexibility if you're not a fan of magnets!

Haven't watched the video yet but looking forward to it! I've been having a lot of fun using a block of 20 thunderers with as many special weapons as they can fit (except mortars just two of those) and being aggressive with them on objectives. Ive had a lot of success just holding one part of the map whe my gunhaulers, endrinriggers, and ArkCo cause havoc everywhere else. The Iron Sky Command ironclad making them immune is just great too.

And worth every second 😉 Seriously though, it’s because I wasn’t sure what level to pitch the video at and so decided to cover everything right down to explaining which models are which. It’s a bit long, but that’s why there’s a tldr and chapters. I’ll be updating it at some point and I’ll try to make it shorter when I do

As much as I enjoy the firepower of a 20 man mixed weapon unit of Thunderers, it takes me far too long to roll the attacks so I've start taking all rifles. But seeing those numbers for the damage, I might need to up my game and speed up to be able to truely bring the thunder!

Have you tried using different coloured dice to designate who is who? I find that helps with at least reducing the number of times I roll dice, even if you then have to sort through them one weapon group at a time in calculation.

Hi Oliver, when I played 20 Thunderers, it was OK since when outside the ship, the special weapons get the +1 to hit, so the shots from the Decksweepers and Rifles have the exact same profile. Then you only have the additional four Cannons. Mortar and Fumigator can be combined when using a different coloured dice for the mortar without rend. It didn´t take up too much time in my opinion. - Duardin.Max

Great video! Discovering this channel has been great! Only one questión: Already painted some foot duardin (moslty arkanauts, thunderers and heros, now I need to paint my baloon-dwarfs, so... how do you deal to spray them?? Without the fly stance? Any help would be apreciated!

I haven't used the flight stand that comes in the box for any of my ships, I've used clear acrylic rods and drilled into the ship so it can just slot on and off. Alternatively Magnet Baron do some good ones and you can probably be ok using the GW one on the Gunhauler. For painting you want the ships in a few different sub-assemblies (the more the better really), generally the hull, balloon, crew, and the balloon supports all being separate will all make painting a lot easier. I also recommend magnetising the main guns on the ships.

A future video idea; what metall colors are the best? Is it worth paying postage for other metall colors than what your local shop has? what metall colors does the crew use?

I think this is a question for Vince Ventruella rather than me 😅 I’ve always only ever used citadel paints and they seem to do the job, but I know he hates them haha. I think the pigment in them are a bit bigger than they need to be, but I haven’t tried anything else to compare

@@Aethercast Yes, the citadel paints uses mica and I think some other brands uses aluminium. But for a Kharadron podcast I feel a metal paint video would fit nicely in your library. Maybe invite a guest lecturer like you did with AoS Coach? But I agree, there are already a lot of paint videos for metallic paints.

+1 attack of missile against enemy within 3".... With 'not so recent' changes to the Garrison rules, does the new 'can do anything as if it was on the battlefield' rule takes precedence over the rules listed in the warscroll card?

Unfortunately not for a couple of reasons; 1. The general precedent if there’s a contradiction is abilities override core rules, rather than the other way around. 2. The wording is specifically about being garrisoned rather than on the battlefield or not. If it said the ability can’t be used while not on the battlefield then it would be different. The recent faq confirms models in a garrison are treated as being on the battlefield, but that doesn’t mean they’re not part of a garrison.

A bit hit and miss really, you can’t take units of 20 anymore, and 15 is only in Barak Nar. But generally most people are still opting for either all rifles or all special guns. There’s a fe more people looking to footslog thunderers now

This was helpful, was leaning all rifles and this helped me decide. So i can stick the banner on the sergeant and that is 100% legal? I guess it doesn't say a "different" model has to be it. Next box that is definitely what I'm doing with the banner if so.

Yeah completely fine to make the sergeant the banner guy. Don’t forget you can only have one sergeant per unit though (not 1 in 5).
