Just learning clawhammer style, and this was awesome! Sounds great in the modal tuning, yet isn't too hard for a beginner to learn. You make great videos, and my students love them, too. Thanks!

Are people really so stupid they actually think the older one is "playing his banjo when the kid is trying to talk"? It's called "tuning", people. It's normal for a banjo. It takes a few minutes. It's standard for a performer to talk to the audience and chat and joke while they tune it so the audience doesn't get bored, or better, they have another performer talk or play a small solo to distract the audience from the technical, boring procedure of re-tuning the instrument. That's what they are doing here, the boy is keeping the audience occupied while his grandfather(?) retunes his banjo for a new song. Do you know how banjos work even? You can't just tune one and then leave it, you've got whole different ways to tune the strings for different songs. What exactly would you do differently? Then you have the people saying "he should have done a second take", like they've apparently never learned the difference between a live show and "live" KZfaq channel. This is a show they put on for some people, not for a camera. Someone happened to record it. You don't stop a live performance and say "oh, sorry, we'll take that from the top, we want out KZfaq video to be really good". At least you don't do that if you're not a total dick.

It seems like serious professional players strike the tine “backward“ or in toward the cheek. It seems to get a stronger, clearer sound. That said, I am a beginner also, and I also like playing out/away from the face, just feels more natural.

these guys are great musicians, although ive always thought its pretty messed up to brainwash young kids in a church before they have a chance to decide for themselves, it messed up a lot of people i grew up with, they can barely function socially, are totally oblivious and awkward about basic biology or natural things like nudity, and are sometimes super oppressed and rabid about other peoples myths, which are so arbitrary, just people from different cults arguing with other cults about what to name their sky god, the kids obviously shy doing this live but he did shred on that thing i know thats neither here nor there, dont mean to bring that up on a video about music, my apologies wasn't meaning to be rude

Sometimes people play music in churches because they are big rooms with lots of seating. I’ve played in churches. It doesnt have anything to do with religion. It’s just a room. You’ve got no reason to believe this kid is being brainwashed by a cult just cause he’s in the building on off hours.
