John, your videos shoyld be archived as educational material. Highly informative. These mushrooms are a good filler material in food dishes. Toss email in a hot skillet with butter, add a touch of brown sugar and chopped black walnuts. It'll caramelized a tad,let it cool and mix it in a side salad. Pretty tasty. Otherwise they aren't bad, just a bit earthly tasting.

Thank you for another great, detailed and informative video, John. I’m in Mercer County, PA and I’ve been finding a bunch of these over the past week. It’s a very unique and interesting mushroom, for sure. Have you found many Jack O Lantern mushrooms in your area?

They look really cool, but kinda a bummer it doesn't taste anything special. What is the texture like?

Edible in the mushroom world doesn't mean it's tasty... It just means it won't kill you. There are edibles and then there are "choice edibles"

I haven’t trusted myself to try any of the boletes. I have heard if it bruises blue, then it is not good to eat. Other than that, I believe it’s just taste preference.

This is not true. There are many boletes that bruise blue that are still excellent edibles. There's one in particular in my area of Florida called Pulchroboletus Rubricitrinus that bruises blue and I eat it all the time. It has a fruity flavor :)

Another example: here in New England we have Bicolor Boletes with blue-bruising pores and firm custard-yellow flesh that are similar to Porcini/King Boletes in taste and texture. Where newbies should be careful is with bolete type mushrooms with bright red pores, especially neoboletus and rubroboletus species, some of which are edible, some are not, and identification can be tricky. Fortunately, of the hundreds of species of boletes and similar pored mushrooms ( including Suillus, Leccinum) in North America, only a dozen or so are known to be sufficiently toxic to make you ill (gastrointestinal upset and vomiting) and none are known to be deadly. Many are simply unremarkable, having an unappetizing mushy texture, or are spicy hot or bitter. A "nibble and spit" field test won't make you ill and will weed those out in a hurry!
