You hear me harp all the time about not throwing parts at a problem. Sometimes there may be no better option to find a nagging problem. At least do it systematically going from cheap to more expensive. Old Spence's overheat problem is improving but not fixed yet. Here is our "final" attempt to fix the problem. Will it work? Tune in for the next episode.

I NEVER would have guessed that there was a thermostat in the oil cooler AND a junk water pump. Great catch! That’s why they pay you the big bucks Kent!

Maybe you don't actually learn someting new every day. But I sure did with this video. I had no idea there was a thermostat in the oil cooler housing. Certainly an eye opener for me.

If it's not this, remove the frost plugs from the block and have a look. I have seen 2 British Leyland diesel engines that had clean radiator fluid like old Spence but had a lot of goop in the block, especially at the back, farthest away from the water pump, presumably because there's less flow than far from the pump. In ye Olde days, manufacturers used to put a drain plug at the back of the block because they knew it was a problem, so you were supposed to that tap every now and then to let anything building up flow out.

This is more of parts sniper rifle tather than the canon. There are times when each and every part of the cooling system has to be replaced. Changing the parts one at a time is the correct way to do it. I was lucky that my OM646 diesel powered W204 only needed a new thermostat for the cooling system to be working perfectly.

Yeah, I've seen another video where they've warned about water pumps like these because the increase gap in the impellor doesn't just scrape in the housing it also reduces the ability of the pump to flow coolant effectively to the point that it increases an engine's temperature up to 10c. And it's not just limited to the diesels since these pumps are the same pumps that are used on the gas engines from the m115 to the m110 engines.

Yes, it is much better to spend $249.95 for a part at the dealer rather than $59.95 at the auto parts store.

I understand your concern, but I would like to make a couple of comments. That cheap water pump cost me about $800 to fix the problems it caused. Imagine if you had to pay a shop to chase the trouble it caused. Also, you don't have to buy quality OEM parts from the dealer. My water pump kit comes in at $94.50 with new bolts, a special wrench, and instructions.

@@Mercedessource I have been trough some aftermarket parts from different brands on my w124 ...and oh boy, I had rather payed 3 times the money rather than having to troubleshoot and replace those parts again (for even more money)
