I wouldn't call it subtle. The thing that makes him instill fear is the act of being a complete psychopathic sadist. Doing horrible things is just what's needed to make it in this world, so it is expected that everyone does it but actually seeing someone who enjoys doing it even though it's an act is absolutely terrifying.

@RickyVis you have the wrong idea. it was subtle. He was acting friendly before he murdered that man. If he wasn't being subtle, he would have been rageful towards them giving them a hint that he might do something bad.

Esther was a sweet lady who shared with Negan what little food she had on her. Her death and Negans reaction spelled it out for maggie. She even made eye contact with him after he killed the man showing that she finally understood him. Negan looked down and away from Maggie because he was ashamed

They kinda did deserve it tho. We only see him as the villain bc he was introduced as one. Think about it from his POV his people wanted answers and revenge for the deaths of their loved ones that Rick and his group killed. They didn’t need to kill those people and by doing that they got on Negans radar. They did it to themselves icl. The brutality wasn’t necessary. But an eye for eye ig. Ntm they wiped out an entire outpost and negan only killed 2 of their people, so in reality he actually went easy on them.

@@SouthernPrincipe I’m just saying from different perspectives Rick and his group aren’t exactly hero’s, neither is negans but I bet we’d have a different POV if instead we were following the saviours story this entire time. Yeh the people that worked for negan were mindless brutes that liked killing and graping etc, but if it wasn’t ethical in negans eyes or a disgusting act in his POV he would on the spot kill those kinds of people.
