Wonderful to see old photographs of Birkenhead. My grandmother was born in Birkenhead near the docks her father and her brothers were dock workers. My Grandmother had to leave school at 12 when her mother passed away. She had to keep house for her father and her brothers. At the outbreak of WW1 she met my grandad, a Welshman, when he was posted to Birkenhead. Her maiden name was Sarah Pierce and her mother was Sarah Davis. Seeing a photo of a Sarah Davis brought back all she had told me.

I grew up on Bedford Road in the 80's just over the road from Lukes. Been searching for a photo of my old home for years and in every pic I find of Bedford Road, it's just out of shot! Great pics though and thanks for sharing.

Hello Paul, I was born in Railway road in 54 left the wirral in 75 but find my self back again nearly 50 years later, the admiral pub at the bottom of Bedford road is now a very successful restaurant reverted back to its original name, ( refreshment rooms ). As I remember opposite Luke’s were shops and martins bank on the corner, pet shop, tv repair shop, cafe / restaurant directly opposite, I will keep an eye out for any interesting photos that may come up, take care Fred

@@fredsalem4568 Hey Fred, thanks for getting in touch. I lived on the corner of Bedford & Railway above the shop, front door was in Railway Rd as I'm sure you know. I was there from 81 till early 90's. Live in Hampshire now and haven't been back for a long time but I do keep checking up on the place and seeing how it all is, plus I still have family there obviously, my Grandfather and Nan lived on Chatham Rd. I've always been fascinated by the local Victorian & Edwardian history of the place and would love to see what my old place looked like then. Be well!

Wonderful. My parents grew up in this area and they always talked about some of these things that i have never seen. Some of them i know from being a young boy visiting relatives there. I went back a number of years and so many of the rows of terraced houses by the train tracks had been knocked down including where my auntie lived who used to have a shop on Rochester Road. It made me sad xx but thank you for this collection

Absolutely beautiful collection, and a sorrowful and inspiring take on a Beatles classic really polishes the experience. My family has lived here many years, seven generations! I like to think we put the rock in rock ferry ha. But seriously there are a lot of talented people in the area.

Ged Mcardle I couldn’t agree more, what a wonderful collection of memories. Took me back a few years. You must know the Reynolds from Rockferry, there’s hundreds of them lol and I married one. We actually met at the StAnnes disco way back in the 70s. Where have the years gone 🤗👍

I was born at st caths. Brought up in broughm street. Rock ferry My granny lived in Beaconsfield road I was just a kid when the old market burnt to the ground. There was a photo of my mates dad putting out the fire On a ladder, 'he was a fireman. The fire was a massive fire and totally destroyed the market. My grandfather worked as a clicky on the crosville buses and he also had his own office in Woodside in the list property.. Johnnie winstanley. He was a big character and made everyone smile who met him,'which was most people in Birkenhead due to his job of being on buses everyday.. How times have changed!!. It's so sad really that it had to turn into a horrible place How the heroin changed this town. I hope that one day money is injected into the town and the people get to be happy once again.. I remember the old church in the quarry. I remember my granny used to go the chandler on new Chester road lol. Some good memories here. I was but a child.. I remember the Christmas tree 🎄🌲🎄🌲. Very well at Charing cross.. And dewhurst the bakery on the corner lol. I lived in oxton road when I was a teen. That woman crossing the street on Grange road could even be my aunty Ada..she lived just round the corner. She had the head scarf and the coat and a trolley. She too lived on oxton road in claredon close. The pubs where always heaving and there was a much warmer vibe then to now. Ghosts of the past!!!!! I remember the orange 🍊🍊🍊 lodge walks every week and my granny would say "shut that door son to keep the proddydogs out lol.. RIp violet Sheldon.my gran. Tommy Sheldon Grandad. Ada Hughes formerly Sheldon. Aunt. Johnny winstanley.grandad. Violet winstanley.granny. Sammy winstanley.uncle. Love and miss you all. This walk down memory lane brought you alive again 😊😊😊. Just want to thank you Fred for your work.

@@fredsalem4568 Hi Fred, I think Tim beat Robbie Davies when they were both amateurs. He must have outboxed him , don’t think he had Robbie’s punching power. I remember having a drink with him when he lived near Woodside /Hamilton Square area. A nice bloke. It was very unusual to have two ABA champs from such a small area as Rock Ferry. It wasn’t easy to win those titles during that era.

@@lthompson7625 yes your right, I was there Robbie never laid a glove on him, which was unusual for Robbie as he didn’t mind taking 2 or 3 just to get one of his bombs in lol Tim was defo a top boxer.
