Thanks man, was there on 2 tours as a RAF kid, left in 91. Happy days, my teen years, my best years. Went to Bader, Cheshire then finished up at Windsor in Rheindahlen. Nothing but love for Bruggen. Cheers

Arrived at Bruggen 17 Dec 1962 and it was either snowing or just about to. Didn't see any grass again until April. Joined 80 Squadron (Canberra PR7) as an air radar mech-grand bunch of lads! Was on the parade for HRH Princess Margaret when 80 and 213 got their colours. Had a few months in the summer of '64 at Laarbruch whilst the runway at Bruggen was being updated and generally had an enjoyable tour (with Amstel 45pf a bottle in the Malcolm Club!

I was at RAF Wildenrath (17Sqn) at that time and at the end of August they closed the swimming pool it was so cold, but at the beginning of September it was reopened because it was so hot. We had the first snow in October and the leaves were frozen on the trees and only fell when the the thaw came in April. Amazingly one could go off camp one weekend and there would be lots of Frostschaden but by the next weekend it had all been repaired now if only there was just one local council in the UK that could match that sort of service.

Same thing happened to me when I arrived on 19th Jan 1979, again it was April before we were clear of snow.

The railway engine brought back memories. I worked on Transportation 431MU 1965 to 68. Spent a lot of time unloading the wagons it brought in.

Thanks, this really brought back the memories from ‘73-‘75 when I was a flight line armourer on 31 squadron (Phantoms). Work: TACEVALS, Noddy suits & respirators, nuclear QRA duty were something to get used to. Finish an early shift at 14.00 in summer, heading to the open air swimming pool then Mosel or Rhine wine and cheese whilst sunbathing outside the H block accomodation. The American bar where I was introduced to Schlitz, Budweiser, Singapore Slings, Harvey Wall Bangers and Southern Comfort and 7up, and 8 ball pool on a bigger American pool table. ‘Shush Night’ in the NAFFI club’s bar when it was scaley’s bingo, which used to piss us off. Number 1 in the charts was ‘The Streak’ and one of my fed up mates decided to wind them up by doing a streak through the middle of them. DMS boots, S6 respirator and his tin hat was all he had on… damp squib as they didn’t even notice. 😂 Lads used vodka as anti-freeze in car radiators as it was cheaper than anti-freeze. 8DM to the £ = 200 cigarettes or 50 King Edward cigars. Weekend nights out in Roermond, over the nearby border, in the Netherlands Great times, work hard/play hard. 😊
