The Moravians didn't have cranes in the 1700's, so Old Salem's tradesmen had to get creative when it came to building the roof on the Miksch House & Gardens' newly constructed bake oven. This video shows how each white oak beam had to be hoisted and placed without the use of today's modern machinery. All woodwork and masonry for this project was done on-site at Old Salem Museums & Gardens.

wouldn't it be easier and faster for 3-4 guys to lift that by hand ?

John as a historical woodworker in this case it might be. But a lot of times things were built with green wood. So the logs are a lot heavier and in some cases if the structure is tall they wouldn't be able to reach it. Plus if you figure end a lot of craftsmen work by them self or one other person. If you have to lift a lot of those you will be a lot more tied
