Always felt for years death metal is the hardest and most technical style of guitar to learn, still remember getting a new guitar for Christmas 2006 after hearing CC's KILL album the first time and the next 6 months of internal bleeding, blisters, and carpal tunnel in my hands I endured learning to play this style. Used to always get ridiculed and disrespected by other guitar players also for years because of putting so much effort into learning a style most dont like or appreciate.

Your description of how death metal songs are constructed around the 1:50 mark is so refreshing to hear. I'm an old school metal guy, teen in the 80's and I was always into "heavy" metal like Metallica, Slayer, etc. I have just now really gotten into death metal and I'm totally in love. Went to Amon Amarth show last week w/ Cattle Decapitation (HOLY FUCKING SHIT< FAVE NEW BAND) Carcass and Obituary AND I had front row. Talk about an intro into the coolest genre lol. Anyway your description clarifies a lot for a newb like me especially the guitar playing. Kind of like jazz but cool!!

That first riff reminds me of Altars of Madness, specifically Immortal Rites. Awesome. No more like Chapel of Ghouls. I'm tired, I can't think lol.

Thank you for the video, Jason! I was reading some comments here, and one I agree with wholeheartedly is play what you enjoy, not what others want you to. This applies to me with Death Metal, Black Metal, Thrash Metal, etc., as I enjoy very well played metal guitar, and learning this style helps me play other styles I enjoy. I started playing Cigar Box Guitars (CBG) last year, and the Blues, Swampy Blues, Delta Blues, etc., are my favorite for that type of guitar. Playing CBG's helps when I switch back to electric guitar because the action is much higher, which makes the electric seem much easier for these fast transitions. So, for me, they are all good.

The only thing what I didn't got for a long time was ---> often it sounds cool when you play something really fast but when you're practicing slowly you always think you do something wrong . Cool videos, haven’t picked up a guitar or owned one for over 27 years. Just recently purchased a nice dean custom 24 with active metal pickups and a fender gtx 50 amp for starters. It’s amazing how I remember all the different scales/ notes / chords . Biggest problem is getting my hands back in sync with the old brain . Makes one realize You should have never sold that axe years ago when you could shred with the best of em . Then again I do think guitars have evolved some . That’s a good thing. One thing I do appreciate about your videos is how you give solid advice, especially alternate picking, learning scales , notes . I whole heartedly agree if you don’t use it you loose it . Cheers

I play drums for a stoner rock band. I’ve always wanted to play some more brutal stuff but wanted to do that with guitar. So, I picked one up a few weeks ago. Still trying to learn how to tremolo pick with it, but man I’m having fun. The older stuff from the 90’s is what I grew up on (44 yo now). Can’t wait to get home and try these out.

This is awesome bro! I'm a player coming out of retirement and Thrash and old school Death is my main influence! I used mostly the Locrian mode and Diminished/Minor modes. Basically a mix of Morbid Angel and Exodus as one of the many examples! Are those EMG 85 & 81??!! Best pickups ever.

Some really great insights bud,,I actually was the other way,, went easy route alternate picking,,downstroke came after,, I have to admit once I learnt to downstroke at a good speed, everything improved,,even machine gun gallops kicked up a decent notch🤘🤘🤘

I played guitar on old school thrash/death metal styles more than 20 years. I love standard tuning E with diminish , cromatics and minor scales on EMG81. It's the best for me I never interest lowest tuning with bigger string more than 10/46.

Totally off topic but i got to meet one of my guitar idols last month; Terrance Hobbs. One of the greatest guitar players i've ever beared witness performing. After the show i walked over to him and i shook his hand, and he was telling me and a couple other guys that the show they were playing that night (they played Louisville on the 18th, i live 45 minutes south of Louisville) that it was the coldest day of their tour at that point. I told him he should come during the wintertime and he was like "i live in New York man, you don't have to tell me about cold." 😂😂😂 such a cool, humble, down to earth guy that i wish i could meet him again.

After all my player this was still extremely useful ❤

I'm left handed but my I started playing guitar in the "standard" way, so I have more trouble in string skipping and arpeggios with my right hand (that's why I usually don't play solos 😅), but my left hand is a beast in terms of speed, strength, hammer-on, barre chords and so on 😄

Quality content as allways!!! great vid for starting out death-metal playing or getting back into (like me... caugh) Let's take a look from the nerd-side of things: Riff 1 would mainly be the A-harmonic-minor key with a switch to the A-phrygian-mode. Switching from "pure" minor(1-2-b3...) to the mode of phrygian (1-b2-b3...) works really well, since in its charakter it is basically the same scale. This way you also could switch keys, 'cause A-phrygian is within the scale of F-major/D-minor. And I am going this far to claim: without the harmonic minor scale death metal wouldn't even exist. (Pls, correct me, if I'm wrong in any way!!!) Imho theory helps tremendously with building riffs, espacially in more complex styles of music, like DM. (took me twenty years to understand 😭, to all of you...pls, don't waste your time with beeing ignorant...) Though rumours exist, that at decent speed chromatics allways work 😁 Quote: "...(Death-)Metal is the continuation of classical music by other means..."

Since I'm a big fan of the Early-Old-School Death Metal Music I can see the techniques where the scales are coming from? I see how perfectly alternated the pickings are More Melodic Shredding at most times but Raw and Dirty Riffs as well in hindsight this is performed well.

Actually just signed up for 'Free' Metal Lessons buddy. I'm on Disability (fixed-income) so just dropping $50 is something I don't really do much these days lol 😆. Been playing almost 24 yrs (doing Luthier work 16 of those yrs) but I've always been a metal rhythm guitar player. I'd say the past 4 maybe 5 yrs I've really been working/studying on more theory (lol well, the best I can, as well as what I'm able to get ahold of). Trying to out on being more of that all around player, leads, possible solo here and there. When it comes to the last (2) like harmonies/leads & solos I definitely could benefit from lessons/directions. Those are some basic riffing to me!, cool sounding for sure! I like the grooving of the final third riff. My problem is I do not know what to mix with I. I am not a Drummer or a Bassist. I make things up so often. I am not really thinking when I play I just start playing. Like some kind on meditation theoopy for myself. I start with an idea then mix with stuff I have dome over the years.

Second riff isn't it 9.8.7. and 8 on e string? Tab on screen says 7. Was playing it and couldn't figure how you'd do 7.7 with your fingers and zoomed in and see A string 7 and E string 8. Correct me if I'm wrong! :) Otherwise, thank you. Fun riffs to play! Trying to line them up together like you do at end!

What tunings do you use? Both on 6 and 7 strings. Thinking of writing in these tuning pairs. That way when performing live I don’t have to switch to a 6 string for all the 6 string songs, can just play them on 7 E ♭ Standard (6) B ♭ Standard (7) C Standard (6) G Standard (7) D Standard (6) A Standard (7) E Standard (6) B Standard or Drop A (7)
