I'm thrilled to get the opportunity to have one of my biggest influences show us his rig. "Old School" Jerry Delagardelle bought his '78 Kenworth W900A new and it's certainly been through plenty of changes over the years. I absolutely love the personal touches and customizations he's done over the years, particularly the diamonds, paint, and window etching. In its current form it's powered by a Cummins N14 backed by a 5 & 4 speed gear boxes and a Freightliner rear clip. The 3 tone paint scheme was done in 2004.
Photo #1 shows the truck in its original from when Jerry first purchased it from Kenworth in 1978.
Photo #2 was taken in the late 80's after the frame was stretched, the sleeper was extended , dual exhaust, alloy wheels, and a new paint scheme were added.
Jerry's personal trucking history & experience is:
leased to UMTHUN TRUCKING Eagle Grove, IA from 77-79
PACIFIC INTERMOUNTAIN EXPRESS (P.I.E.) Oakland, CA 79-81
THE WAGGONERS TRUCKING Billings, MT 81-85
TIGER TRANSPORT Missoula, MT 85-87
WATKINS SHEPARD Missoula, MT 87-95
3-I TRUCKING Bettendorf, IA 95-99
CRST Eldridge, IA 99-02
Started N.I.S.T. Independently with his own authority in 2002
If I have the opportunity, I'll hopefully be doing an interview & truck tour with Jerry's oldest son Joe and his killer Rat Rod Peterbilt and blacked out end dump. Stay tuned for that!
Huge thank you to Jerry for sharing his time & story with us. Truckers like him are more rare all the time. Take the opportunities to shake their hand, listen to stories, ask questions, and carry on the traditions & work ethic of the professional trucker. You'll be glad you did. Peace & grease

I just love how he simply rebuilt the truck to suit his needs or the times- added his own personality to it and just kept rollin' with it. Nothin fancy and no huge payments , not owned by a bank. That is Old School to a T

This guy is only a few years older than me. I remember the days of less than a dollar diesel, no power steering and no air ride seats. I had completely forgotten about the double the cost of what the pump read until he mentioned it. The trucking industry is unrecognizable today compared to what it was back then. I sure do feel fortunate to have started way back then.

That ole hand Jerry has seen it all...I guarantee! I grew up in a 79 model w9. Parked out front of my parents house, I had my first girlfriend in the sleeper of that old truck. Learned to drive in it too. Trucking around America with my dad when I was a kid...best times of my life.

I started working on trucks in 82 when I was still in high school. And I remember those trucks very well. Because of where I grew up in the mountains most of the trucks were Mack or Autocar, we had a lot of stone quarries and gravel banks. But some of the guys were doing runs into the city (NYC) to supply the cement companies with sand and stone, and they would run KW, Petes and IH's. One customer we had wanted a new (used) truck so we built him a Mack RS700L from a glider. We got the cab, front axle and frame rails from Canada and built a Mack 300hp 675ENDT engine with just a straight 5spd transmission with 4.17 Mack differentials. Several years later we built him a another RS700L with a 300+ engine, a RTO 9513 transmission and 3.83 (I think) Mack differentials. Both trucks were set up with wet lines, as most of his work was with a dump trailer. Just like Jerry's truck back in the 70s and early 80s you could swap out any engine, transmission and differentials for anything you wanted, there were no computers, everything was mechanical and interchangeable. The worst thing you had to do was change motor mounts, location of fuel lines or the throttle linkages. Anybody with a brain, a drill and good welding skills could build any type of truck the customer wanted. We were the busiest shop around because of our fabrication skills, we always told our customers that the difficult we fixed right away and the impossible took just a little longer.

You just got another sub bro! I'll be damned if Jerry don't remind me of my granddaddy, uncles and dad all rolled into one. The old guys got me hooked on it and I blame them completely, lol. I have a flattop coffin sleeper on my old Pete and I always hear "Ya need a condo cab" Well I don't live in my truck and I wouldn't want to for more than a couple of days at a time, it starts feeling like a jail cell on wheels real quick when you "Have to" make those huge truck payments and race that clock like so many do nowadays. Great channel my friend!

Thanks for sharing his story with us, I typically find myself fast forwarding some videos to get to see more of the truck, but I was hanging on his every word.
