Brian Weissman's legendary build of "The Deck" has been the gold standard for all powered Type1/Vintage/Old School builds using the early sets of Magic the Gathering since nearly the inception of Magic. Brian has evolved that deck over the years to adjust to shifting metagames Based on location, and also for the changing card pools.
Randy Buehler is a hall of fame Magic player and he's been attending Old School formats and making very strong showings with this build of Brian's "The Deck." I got to play against this exact build at GP Vegas 2017 sitting right across from Randy himself, and since then I've used it for play testing.
I've realized this build is very similar to other builds of "The Deck" but it does function a bit differently and it's weakness is also a bit different from Brians builds. I thought the differences were interesting enough that it warranted an EtME Deck Tech review!
Go visit Randy Buehler himself via his Twitter feed here, tell him that Edwin sent you if you do please!

The Lightning Bolt is indeed for pro-black creatures (that are immune to The Abyss), plus they are generally pretty good against all weenie swarms. I sometimes have run 2 in the board. The Abyss is also the reason I have 3 Underground Seas (and 4 when I'm not making room for Strip Mines) versus 2 Volcanics ... being able to play The Abyss immediately can be the difference between winning and losing. You aren't wrong about all the red cards in the sideboard, so at my last event I actually changed the SB'ed Island into a Volcanic Island so you can swap depending on whether it's an Abyss matchup or a Red Elemental Blast matchup. (Of course that doesn't help versus Blood Moon so I have considered having 2 lands in the board ... at Eternal Central events anyway. If Strip is restricted you can just run all the Undergrounds and Volcanics (or maybe turn 1-2 into Fellwar Stones). As for Timetwister, I think it's purely a "win more" card and I have yet to ever lose a game where I had control and got to the late-game. If I ever fail to kill my opponent then maybe I'll start worrying about running out of Mishra's Factories, but between Regrowth, Recall, and Fireball (and Braingeyser once) I have never failed to actually kill someone. Spending a card to have no impact on the board and give your opponent 7 cards in hand is just not an effect I am interested in. Think of it versus the Fireball. Fireball can win me the game if all my factories die (which shouldn't happen anyway if you are careful with them, for example use the Disrupting Scepter or Mind Twist to clear all the Plows and/or Bolts out of your opponent's hand before you activate them) but Fireball can also help me stay alive in the early game. It plays the role you are using Timetwister to play, but also has early and mid-game utility. As far as mid-game Timetwister improving your future draws ... who cares? You shouldn't need that. You should be drawing 2 - 4 cards per turn in those games anyway so you're already finding everything you need (and probably discarding to hand size). Timetwister is training wheels, and we all ran it in control decks back in the day so our decks could go infinite, but we were wrong.

Hey Randy! Great comments, thanks for filling in those gaps. I see what you mean about the Twist. Sure, it's possible I was playing your deck too aggressively and that's why I ran out of factories or disenchants. But I do need to ask, how often does a match go to time? Because if you require your opponent to really truely be out of threats before you activate factories then does that make the games much longer and therefore threaten the 1 hour round?
@randybuehler
@randybuehler 6 жыл бұрын
I don't usually worry about them killing my factories until 1 or 2 are gone, but time is indeed an issue. You need to be able to play quickly with this deck, especially once you are mostly in control. I have gone to time twice in 6 events.

Great video Edwin, a budget old school 93-94 deck tech would be great. I never liked Timetwister, as the goal of The Deck is to try to whittle down your opponents hand & nullify their threats, so why refill their hand and bring back those threats? However, in a control mirror match (especially vs millstone), I can see the importance of recursion. What do you guys think of Feldon's Cane as a happy medium in the sideboard?
@randybuehler
@randybuehler 6 жыл бұрын
The control mirror match is usually about who can get a Jayemdae Tome going first. You want artifact destruction (and Red Blasts) and you can't afford to draw a blank like Feldon's Cane during that fight. It might be a good SB card to avoid decking if Millstone decks were any good, but they aren't.

Hi R A, Sure, I was actually planning to post a budget Old School deck pretty soon. I'm narrowing the choice down right now. It's been between 3 different main archtypes. All budget, all very effective. Yes the Twist gives people cards again, but like I said in the video when I cast Twist late game I drew so many answers and got back all the bombs I need that were used or destroyed. Late game this deck has way more mana on the table therefore you draw a solid grip of answers. Your opponent re-draws a more typical hand of his own deck, so the odds are in your favor. Also, just the fact that I have the twist lets me play more aggressively and have a better chance to close up the match before it goes to time. That was my point I made to Randy above. An early twist can also be amazing if you draw that huge mana bust out hand... you can drop it all, twist a fresh grip of cards, and sometimes twist away a great hand that your opponent has. That does not happen a lot, but it does happen. Twist also is a SOLID answer to mill decks or late games where The Deck was drawing really deep and could get decked. That happened several times when I put this deck against my Turbo Stasis 2.3 deck. Randy is of course 100% right about the mirror match. It's all about who can out card-advantage the other guy which is what the Tome is all about.

Man nice video! I'm fascinated by "The Deck" since 1996 when I started playing, too. Time by time I built up my own copy of the deck. But I have a bit more black elements. Sinkhole for land destruction and 2 hypnotic specters because of it's discarding abbilty. :) To be faster I also have 2 Dark Rituals. If you're interested I can send you a picture or decklist. :)

I wouldn't really call it a build, it just got there somehow. like you mentioned in the other video that Deck you went to GP Vegas with. Yep, pure fun to play I kind of went the other way. I started with a black/red big creature deck. Juzam Djinn, Shivan Dragon, Sengir Vampire, Lightning Bolts... Then I heard about "The Deck" and I more or less transformed the old one into my own "The Deck". Long story ... But when this transforming was finished I was 14 years old. Like I said, me and my friends unfortunately stopped playing, I nearly sold all of my cards and I don't know why but the only thing I kept was this deck. So... about 18 years, this spring an old friend asked me if I still play and if I have some cards and that was an instant flashback into my childood. This is also the reason I'm interested in MTG again. I would say I rediscovered it. I also contacted Daniel and guess what, he invited me into that Facebook Group and I'm in. :) But anyway... let's make this long story short. Is there any other way for showing the picture. I have to admit I'm not on instagram. :/

Cool history thanks for sharing that. Instagram is really really cool for Old School Magic players. There's a LOT of content on there for old school. You might consider actually signing up! I often tell people to sign up on Instagram also because it has a message system unlike KZfaq. So I chat back and forth with people on Instagram sometimes. Short of that, find me on Facebook and send me an invite. We can chat and share pictures that way too. Look for Edwin Tracy.

awesome deck tech!! this is a format i really want to get into once i have all the power in my cube done, this should be my next project (need pearl, emerald, sapphire and lotus). Your explanations are well thought out and the ability to twist is great for later game, given that u have 2 tutors, makes it more possible. Factories are under rated as when blocking 2/2 becomes a 3/3 really easily even with one factory :) having 4 though...wow!! I really like your take and the side board cards are an excellent choice, surprised that the elements blasts are forgotten that the destroy AND counter....

Hi Shan Judo, thanks for the comments. Be sure to direct most of your appreciation for this deck to Brian Weissman and Randy Buehler, but thanks for being kind about my review of it. I would VERY much encourage you to get into Old School. After doing it for about a year I think I can solidly say it's my favorite MTG format of all time. The card values just keep going up, the people playing it are really passionate about it, the players tend to be more mature players (less jerks etc), the number of viable decks is HUGE! How many other formats literally still have 30 different decks at a tournament after decades of time for that set to be "solved."? And also all the play moves are so epic. Huge broken luck plays, or total freeze lockdown, massive burn, creature beat down, discard decks, Insane combo decks, counter heavy control decks, land destruction decks, Old school has it all! You might want to get moving on those last P9 cards... if I can read the tea leaves correctly I personally think they are not going to get cheaper anytime soon... very much the other way around.

Yeah you make it sound like a dream!! I got in at revised and the old school guys sound my age group (i'm 36). the issue is that being in Australia grabbing power is hard, we fight the currency conversion and buying from a player is hard. There is DACARDS and they do good deals but i still have to fight the conversions, so getting a lotus for anything under $7,000 USD is rare... Furthermore i need workshop, bazaar, tabanacle and library for my lands on top of the power... Moat, abyss, void are also things i need...im a long way away :( I wish i had the contacts you have. But yes my friend, i will be getting into this format please keep up the great videos on this format i think you have cornered the market!!

Hi Edwin! I really like your deck techs for Old School. I currently play Legacy and I play Smokestack and Pox. Is there a Pox-like deck in old school that uses Chains of Mephistopheles, Nether Void and The Abyss that you've seen? If I not I might give creating it a go. Also, thank you for the videos! I've liked every video that I've seen.

Hello Edwin, would love to see a video talking about the use of proxys on oldchool magic! we all know a lot of people cant aford all the power, for example i live in portugal and never had a chance to buy beta/alpha or unlimited here... in the other way, i love the oldschool feeling because reminds me when i start playing (Revised) and the in Mirrodin i sell my stuff.... now im getting slowly back in the game, and cant find anyone in my country with power/old school cards to play, soo im thinking going on skype to play... but with some proxys of course! I honestly cant stand the new card frame and quality of this new sets.

Proxies are fake cards, and have no place in the old school community. Revised and 4th edition are fairly inexpensive If you cant afford power 9 or other higher end cards, its simple you just dont play them.
@RA-jk9qd
@RA-jk9qd 6 жыл бұрын
You can try Collectors Edition, although those prices have shot up too. I think Wizards should reprint the Collectors Edition cards as a happy medium between the Reserve List and satisfying the market. They are basically official proxies as they are not DCI Tournament Legal but are allowed by Eternal Central events.

Hey there Stand Relax, Thanks for the comment and welcome back to MTG! I"m very happy to tell you Skype games IS DEFINITELY the way to firstly play some great old school games with other people just as passionate as yourself... but it's also a really cool way to connect with the worldwide community of old school magic players. Definitely try it! I'll play a game with ya, just get added to the FB group, find me online, send me an invite and we can play! I actually already have a video talking about the reserve list and proxies. I'm definitely a supporter of proxies. As I state in the video, my experience of proxies is that does not hurt card prices, it HELPS them! Because lets be honest here... NOBODY wants to play with a proxy. Everybody would really prefer real cards. So what I've experienced for decades now is that when people use proxies the next then you know... they are buying real cards and showing you their replaced proxies with pride and excitement. Proxies brings more people into the format and eventually it ADDS buyers which helps card value. Again, that is not some crazy opinion, it's literally based on decades of real world experience with proxy tournaments and communities. Yeah the card quality does need to reset. I keep trying to tell WoTC to make a set with the look/feel of Beta. Seriously... people would LOSE THEIR MINDS for a set that looked and felt like Beta. Don't you think?!?

Hey Mathew, I think most of the time people travel to an event where artists have a booth and get them signed there. There's a lot of Artists going to GP Vegas! There are often MTG artists attending Comicon events too. I think most artists also have a way to send them cards for signing over their websites or agents.

First I've ever heard of "old school". Pretty close. WE play "OLD SCHOOL". OLD SCHOOL, includes FOR ANTE. No bans, no restrictions, unglued and unhinged legal as well! I've lost rishadan ports, and won spirit of the nights and force of wills. A sol ring was in an ante once but that guy ended up winning. Usually winners will bargain for your card back if losing it breaks your deck. EDIT: Ok just read the old school rules. Lame as bird crap on a door handle. What would be the logic of banning reprints that don't feature original art but allowing reprints that do? Seems a pretty silly personal preference that just throws up an unnecessary barrier to entry.
@EdwintheMagicEngineer
@EdwintheMagicEngineer 6 жыл бұрын
I'm glad to hear your local community has a format you all enjoy. All the power to you you guys! In this case, the "93/94 Old School Magic" format is very popular and I'm quite fond of it. I would absolutely NOT play that format if it required ante. The original artwork is a nice touch because it keeps the nostalgia and feel. That's really the main driver behind the format. I personally think playing for Ante is also squarely in the category of unnecessary barrier to entry since so many players (like me) have zero desire to play if i can lose cards. That's great you and your group like it, but it's certainly not my taste.

Red/Green is rock solid in this format. If you have the Berserks at least the speed of that deck can be insane. An opponent cannot tap out against it because it can swing for 20 far too easily.
