In response to your question, I don't think they were ahead of their time at all. It was an era filled with massive songwriting and vocal talent . . . the Temptations, the Four Tops, Aretha Franklin, Tom Jones, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, the Beatles, the Supremes, Lenny Welch ("Since I Fell for You"). . . and on and on and on. The Righteous Brothers were just a major component of the greatest musical era in America's history, in my opinion. I've had some success as a songwriter and whenever I get a chance to advise young songwriters, I tell them, "please, don't listen to your peers or what's on the radio now. Most of it has terrible melodies, terrible lyrics. So much of it is just awful. Go back and listen to the music of the '60s and '70s if you want to hear great melodies, UNIQUE artists who are readily identifiable . . . not clones of each other." Thanks for the great response . . . to this performance and others. You rock.

I can recall every detail,I was 10 in ‘64 and I can even remember the smells. The music was everything, all the culture of those 2 decades stemmed from the music. This is called blue-eyed soul. These guys were the best. Bobby Hatfield with his beautiful tenor voice & Bill Medley with his deeper voice. They were magic together. And remember this is done live. No auto-tuning crap like today. And the songs had meaningful beautiful lyrics. Other great songs by them is "Soul & Inspiration", "Just Once In My Life", "Ebb Tide", "Rock & Roll Heaven" etc.

I wouldn't say that they were ahead of their time, they were a product of their time. This song was produced by Phil Spector, a major music producer who changed Pop music. One of his signature songs, along with this one, was 1963's "Be My Baby" by The Ronettes. He also produced Tina Turner's 1966 "River Deep, Mountain High". His signature "wall of sound" can be heard in these songs, as well as in this song by The Righteous Brothers. Phil Spector produced music starting in the late 50s and well into the 70s. Phil Spector's life is also a Hollywood producer/drama/murder story.

I've always maintained that there were three voices in the Righteous Brothers. Bill's gravelly bass/baritone, Bobby's crystal clear tenor, and a third when somehow those two extremes harmonise perfectly. Soul and Inspiration is pretty damn incredible too.

If you haven't already, try listening to Canadian singer/musician Loreena McKennitt, she does her work in differing Celtic styles of music and is known to travel to different areas of the world to study the Celtic influences to expand her knowledge, she writes a lot of her own words, uses lines from well-known writers and poets of the past, and some traditional songs, she is great on the piano, harp, and accordion-her voice is unreal, and she is one of the few people who are as good, and sometimes better live-and a lovely person in all senses of the word-I agree about the era you mention, as I am the same age as you.

You're getting into some of my first musical memories--I'm 65. The early sixties were an incredible time for vocal music: folk, rock and roll, R and B etc. Also I think a great time for studio production (Phil Spector etc). Classic! So glad this format has emerged to help get younger people to pay attention to these great old songs. I hope you've got some younger viewers coming to discover things they haven't heard.

They were indeed great! Your reaction was spot-on! If you haven't already checked out the Everly Brothers I think you would appreciate them too. They were named the greatest vocal duo in the history of rock by Rolling Stone. They infused country with rock creating the country rock or rockabilly style. Two real life brothers whose voices blended so perfectly & with such synchronicity they sounded like what I imagine angels must sound like. My favorite love song is the Everly Bros "Let It BeMe".

They sang in clubs and were performing in a bar in Oceanside, CA, which is right next to Camp Pendleton, the huge Marine base near San Diego. There was some black Marines in the audience one night enjoying their singing and one of them said, "You are righteous, brother." And they adopted that as their name. The song was produced by Phil Spector. Look up his list of hit records sometime. Spector's wife sang in a group called The Ronnettes who sang the great song, Be My Baby. Spector wrote and produced a song by The Crystals called And Then He Kissed Me. These are worth your attention too. I grew up listening to this music. Graduated from high school in 1963. Music in the 60's & 70's was fantastic. Great musicians and songwriters. Live shows day after day for weeks. It was a grind but groups learned how to put on a great show. Now it is three chords, autotune, and engineering that makes shows look good but sound robotic and, well, engineered.

A minor correction: The club was in Santa Ana and the Marines were from the El Toro Marine base in Orange county.😊

@@johncurran6031 Hi, There are interviews floating around where they talk about it. They were in a 5 member group called the Paramours. The club was Jon's Black Derby. They were there for a few months. But, then, they were fired (their term) because they refused to work for $10 a night. That was nearly the end of them except for a guy talking Bobby and Bill into playing at the Rendezvous Ballroom (also in Orange county) where the kids loved Little Latin Lupe Lu.

Bill is a bass-baritone. Bobby is a tenor whose voice often reached the register of a countertenor (equivalent to that of a female contralto or mezzo-soprano.) Arguably the most perfect contrasting of voices in a group or duo in the history of music. You can thank Phil Spector for the production values. Oh, and those are LIVE mics. No backstage manipulations. The clear definition of "blue-eyed soul,"

These guys were a bridge of musical styles, much like Bobby Darin and Johnny Rivers. This was pre-Beatles/British invasion music. These tunes were a blend of Big Band/Jazz/ Doo Wop/ and popular music and provided an excellent platform for musical growth. I'm 70 years old and must say that my lifetime had some of the finest musicians and music to grow up with; by the way, I'm an old "Folkie".

The ladies all melt when they sing "baby, baby, I'd get down on my knees for you. . . if you would only love me, like you used to do". There aren't many lines that are as emotional.

Google search of this song reveals that "According to the music licensing organization BMI, the Righteous Brothers' song "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" was the most-played song on American radio and television in the 20th century. By 1999, it had over 8 million airplays, and by 2011, it had almost 15 million. It held the title of most-played song for 22 years until 2019, when it was surpassed by "Every Breath You Take"." Also "The song was written in 1964 by Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, and Phil Spector, and is considered an example of Spector's "Wall of Sound" recording technique. " Love this song. Excellent review song choice. John

I grew up listening to this song, but I had never seen the music video until recently. There are two things I learned only after I started watching reaction videos to it - 1) I did not realize they were white! And 2) I thought this song was from the late 70s, not the mid-1960s! I had no idea how old this song was. I feel like their musical style inspired a lot of later music, and this song in particular is just phenomenal. And also sexy as hell.

Back then these ARTIST had full orchestras( including in some cases the harp) they didn't have back up singers they had full choirs. Most of these people were known as triple+ threats, they danced, some played instruments, acted, wrote both lyrics and screenplays plus much more. They were the real entertainers.

It's so sad that the young people today don't have the quality of music and entertainment that we "seniors" had. We've seen music go down in talent and ability. There are people out there who can sing beautifully and powerfully, but they are being promoted, but rather held back.

They are considered "Blue Eyed Soul". Many of these groups pulled inspiration from Black artists of the 20s to 40s....Blues', Soul, and Jazz, and others as well I'm sure. Their voices together and alone are perfect together.. is there an adequate word for their Harmony?

Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield started out as members of The Paramours. In 1962, the two decided to leave the five-member group to form a duo. They found their name at a show with the Paramours when a fan shouted, “That was righteous, brothers!”
