OLD TIME SCOTCH COLLIE

In 1900 the Scotch Collie was the dog to have, they were sought after by farmers for their herding ability and they were sought after by city dwellers because they were intelligent and loyal pets, in fact the qualities that made the Scotch Collie a great farm dog were largely the exact same properties that made it a great family dog, their intelligence and desire to please. Later in the 20th century fancy show dogs and the decline of the small family farm made the Scotch Collie obsolete, a few people began searching for and reviving these dogs in the 1980s and 1990s. Today we have a small population of these fantastic dogs left, join us as we work to preserve and increase the Old-Time Scotch Collie. www.scotchcollie.org/

Collies are companions of my life since I was 17, now I am 50 and I can quote that collies are angels without wings but with a superb coat... really I don’t know what my life would have been without them!

From the age of diaper wearing I have been closely associated with Collies. I am 78 years old now I have two standard tricolor puppies now. They are sweet fun loving and certainly loving companions. To the end I will say they are irreplaceable friends. I love my Collie buddies.

We have had 3 collies and never met a nicer, kinder, smart or gentle breed. They are amazing with children, fast to train and so very loyal! The rough Collie has an abundant coat and from my thinking a pointier nose and more triangle head than the Scottish Collie.

Crying as I watch this. Our beloved Honeybun died 2 weeks ago and we are devastated. Just realized she was an Old Farm Collie or an Old Time Scotch Collie. She had the shorter more rounded nose of this breed, round brown eyes, 60 lbs., gorgeous deep red sable with stark white long hair around her neck and chest. She just drew people to her with her regal, serene, loving personality and boy was she smart! We know she can never be replaced, but would love another like her coloring and long hair. Forever in our hearts.

I. so so sorry!!! 😢 My English Shepherd passed away 4 years ago at 14...1/4 of my life with me...I have a labrottie now, and love her very much, but have never gotten over this...

It's hard for the lay person to understand, but the main visible difference between a rough collie and today's modern old-time Scott collie is that even though their Fur is the same length it lays flatter against their body on the old time. The Stout heads the seventeenth-century are gone but the brains and the Loyalty and the herding ability are all still there packaged in an even more beautiful presentation. There's very few breeders who produced these the United States. I was lucky enough to get one from a breeder out of Newport Beach California. I got to meet the whole litter and they are all beautiful

After having had an English Shepherd for 14, I now want another! I almost bought one last week, but the car broke, and taxes due...soooo....no Christmas present puppy for my 7 year old female labrottie and me...Ah well, maybe this spring!!

I am so lucky to have one. He's got the thinner longer nose but he's still an old-world Scotch Collie. I got him from a very renowned breeder in Southern California. He's such a good dog. He's only eleven months now so I haven't had him neutered yet, so he's a little bit hyper but smart as you could imagine. Everyone, and I mean everyone that meets him the first thing out of their mouth as they're gasping for air is that is the most beautiful dog I've ever seen. I guess you looks okay. He's just a good dog to me

Check out the Old Time Scotch Collie Association and the Scottish Collie Preservation Society, two organizations dedicated to bringing this type of collie back.

How can you tell if you have a Scotch Collie or a rough collie. The only difference I can see is the lack of a full coat. I have 2 year old collies that I purchased from an Amish family in Lancaster, PA.

OTSC's or Old Time Scotch Collies are the results of breeders trying to save and recreate the working landrace breed of collie that existed in Scotland and later throughout the United States before the rise of conformation dog shows. These shows gave rise to what is now the modern AKC Rough Collie. Yes, you are correct, the OTSC's coat should be less profuse because they are working/farm/family dogs. They also have regular sized eyes as opposed to the smaller eyes of many Rough Collies today and more of a stop (the area where the muzzle meets the back of the skull. Although they are working dogs they should be biddable, meaning they want to please. They typically are not as intense as Border Collies and Australian Shepherds ... they have an off switch, so they don't have a problem taking it easy when there is no work to be done. Also, breeders of OTSC's are consciously trying to eradicate MDR1 and CEO, two conditions that are prevalent in herding breeds. Your collies could be considered OTSC if they meet most of the above criteria. If you want to know more you should check out the Old Time Scotch Collie Association's site. sampa2nyc it truly does. I have 2, two year old Collies. They are brothers, one is a fawn, and one is a tricolor. The tricolor has "human eyes" the fawn has narrow eyes. The tricolor is more like a dog, the other is very high strung.

I have an Australian shepherd, and I am getting another dog I just don’t know what kind! Would my Aussie be ok with this breed? They a4e beautiful dogs!!
