My dad bought my mom a 316i compact in 1994 as a birthday gift. Now i drive it daily to go to work and I've put a M44B19 in it from a 318is. Going to keep it forever

How reliable is it?
@sldmir56862 жыл бұрын
@@royjaber571 it's very reliable, i bought ruined one 2 years ago, and it never dissapointed me, for engine i changed only spark plugs and air filter - runs everytime, even on -10 degree. The only problem with e36 these days is rust, they are prone to it

It was the kind of car you bought in a heartbeat back then. You were better of with a Toyota Corolla that offered more equipment for the money and actually was as a 1.6 liter faster than (and not even a little bit) than the 316 compact, BUT... The BMW just gave you that smile when driving! You liked to get into for work, you even liked to get in a traffic jam with it. Iconic car!

I still have one built September 1994, before this episode of TG was shown on 1/12/1994. I think it was the 200th one built or something like that. Nearly 150,000 miles and still used daily.

I like the compact much more than the 4door e36's

It's a very good car, but certainly somewhat sluggish. The 316i weighs around 1200-1300kg, as much as a modern microvan - Kia Venga, Opel Meriva. And it's the size of a Corsa. You can feel the high quality everywhere, the thickness of the roof, the thickness of the gear selector lever connecting rod and so on... Just a high quality compact car. I'm absolutely in love with it.

Those people at the end that were talking junk about it are the original source of all the hate that people seem to harbor for the 318ti these days.

The car that invented the premium/pretentious hatchback segment. Just look how successful the formula has been! Seems like every other car on the road these days is an Audi A3, Merc A-Class or 1-Series. They are all common to the point of contempt now! None of them are better cars than their non-premium competitors yet buyers can't resist a "premium" German badge.

"Very safety cautious" Euro NCAP 1.5/5 stars in 1999
@SuzanneKowalski4 жыл бұрын
The E36 was already a seven years old construction in 1999 and lacked all the electronic gagdetry that was required for good NCAP ratings. It's no surprise that it didn't get any higher points. However, chassis stiffness was not much worse than an average hatchback from 1999 - it was just as bad as any of the competition. (I'm talking about original factory condition, not the flimsy rust buckets you can buy nowadays.)

lol, this guy is quite daft. If he were to go for a ride in one with a little bit of performance work done on it, he would surely eat his words. the DASC kit makes one of these run like a scalded dog! and when you put the H&R springs and Bilstein shocks on it, it handle like a dream!

Sam Tait Good old 1.9 8v M43 (E46/Z3 engine). I own one too (a tad modified still) but with full M-Tehnik aero and sport package. It's a fun car to drive and not to shabby on gas mileage. It's better than the 1.6 version on fuel consumption and also on power band.

@@IWTBF just take care of that pesky pcv valve and check your sway bar bushings in front, it tends to rip them. I sold mine in 2016 in May, bought an E39 and now I own a Mazda 6 MPS. I miss that old tin can, but you take care because it's prone to snap oversteer. Le: oh and check your plastic elbow coming out of your engine (between the engine and firewall) , it tends to leak and lead to some nasty surprises.

Cant understand this company, the 98 model has ASC but a lap belt in the back, this was same even after 2000, my 99 Mondeo had ABS an extra cost option but it had a full shoulder belt in the back centre and a reach/rake steering wheel.
