The build quality was so varied. If you had a good one it was a bargain luxury cruiser with a whiff of prestige. Get a bad one and it was an unreliable money pit.

I had one it never missed a beat or rusted I some times wish I still had it in the garage as I let it go for nothing after rover collapsed Stupid boy 🙄🤦🏻‍♂️

Well I just had delivery of 25 year old 800 Vitesse with 300k on the clock Mad ! I hear you mutter but since my old 7 series BMW was unable to be fixed due to electrical faults and my previous Alfa scrapped as the body fell apart , the Rover is just magnificent . it feels like a 2 year old car no knocks bangs whines or problem , everything works , its as solid as my old 7 series ever was equipment is well made and Clarkson should keep his trap shut . Maybe if he had have done we would still have Rover and Austin today

You could line up a Ferrari, Bentley and a frickin Unimog truck; to Clarkson an Alfa would still win.

I had 4.. Hatchback mk1 2l. Saloon mk1 2.7. Saloon mk2 2l. Hatchback mk2 2l vitesse. The saloon mk1 was the best by far, because it was an ex-police car! Tweaked engine, tweaked suspension, tweaked brakes, manual gearbox. Went like a stabbed rat, and sounded like a race car. Shame the gearbox fell to bits. He was right about the seats though, I have never sat in any car seat that was as comfortable as the 800`s, an that includes my current s-class Mercedes.

The squared off doors and flat roof of the originsl didn't blend too well to the new rounded front and rear end styling, a shame when it turned out they needed new dies and presses anyway as the old ones were worn out so no money was saved carrying over the old panels

I’ve really never seen the huge appeal of Alfa Romeos, it looks a bit ugly to me. I know I’m probably in the minority here but give me a Rover any day!!!

Alfas, like BMWs always woo the motoring press. Yet they don't follow them up when they start going wrong and costing the owner time and money.

Jeremy has always been a pretty extreme Alfa fanboy though. I wanted a 164 until tested in a Swedish TV show, revealing the hell they are to work on. Besides, most rust like crazy and aren't comparable with BMW (FWD, non-inline engines, shit quality, never had comparable performance)

@@adamw2911 The smaller Alfa Mito and Giulietta uses the Fiat Punto platform and a Fiat 1.4 engine. The bigger Alfas like the Giulia and Stelvio use the same platform as a Jeep Gran Cherokee. Yet the motoring press will say how much of a drivers car the Alfa is and how bad Fiats are. Nothing but badge snobbery.

Clarkson has lost his trademark yorkshire accent here , I wondered what he was up to now he is no longer on top gear. There is also plenty of headroom for his massive bouffant.

I guess it'd just repeat Facit history. Honda would get hold of Rover's assets, then use their infinitely larger economy to push Rover into bankruptcy.
