Hey bro. I wanted that kayak very much, after a year of research.Think it's the best fresh/Saltwater vessel out there. I also wanted a 120 PDL that could be motorized, correctly, and not a DIY a motor. Also left my budget, for all the accessories we add. I purchased my HOODOO SPORTS 120 HYBIRD EDITION. I'm 5ft 7-1/2" 151 lbs. My kayak takes a 46lb thrust T.M., which I purchased instead of the Pdl drive. The motor is Fitted for my kayak where the PDL would sit. This kayak came factory with, decent paddle, anchor trolleys, good size hull dry storage, and toe controlled, drop down rudder. I also have my J2 bixpy, which will go on my rudder, this winter. I installed my Garmin striker FF, and the transducer, I made a clay well mold. When it hardens, you put the transducer in your front storage, with about a 1/4 inch of water in the mold. I've fished some lakes and reservoirs 350 ft depth, and haven't had any problems with fish, logs, trees and GPS reads correctly. I run that just on a Cabela's 12v battery, which also powers my voltmeter/USB/cig plug. And 2 Anp outdoors batteries for my trolling motor. Be safe, beautiful vessel setup..🎣🤟🙏

Hey Chris beautiful vessel. I have a Feel free moken 10 lite. I have my 2.5 Suzuki outboard side mounted to a feel free fitted transom. I have a single outrigger I designed. I just put in my fish finder, because she's away for the winter. All my launches, are sandy, rocky, etc. I ended up going with the transducer arm. I love it, if you have the room. This is my 1st kayak, after slot of research it's the one i wanted. Though i haven't used the transducer arm yet, alot of anglers seem to enjoy them. These boats become more of an investment, after you purchase it new. $800 has now become about $4,000.00. Lol..Be safe my friend..

Minnkota needs to put a universal sonar on the trolling motor. This tm is basically an Ultrex so put the mdi or msi foot on the bottom of the tm so no need for excessive wires or an exposed transducer.

I agree. I have a funny feeling that it will be added to next years model. They probably don’t want to release every feature all at once so that way they can sell more in the future. Just my hunch anyway.

I have 2 questions. 1. How does the trolling motor work in grass? 2. What battery are you using for the motor, and how long does it last?
@ChrisMitchellFishing
@ChrisMitchellFishing 4 жыл бұрын
It does pretty well in light vegetation. It can chop it up when you put it on high for a quick burst. I’m using just a Walmart group 27 Deeb cell battery and it lasts all day only if I don’t put it on 10 everywhere I go. I mainly only go as high as 7 and I’m good for an 8 hour day.

It is a great kayak for sure! I'm not 100% sure how much a replacement motor would be but if I would have to guess probably around $700-1k. If I can find a better answer I'll comment back!

@beethor6604 4 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisMitchellFishing Thanks for the reply! Yes please comment back if you find the answer. If its around 1k, that is very doable, plus I think you get 2 year warranty on the motor itself. But if the replacement is to be about half the cost of a brand new autopilot yak.. that would be a turn off in my opinion. Also, thanks for the trailer video, going to have to do something similar as well.

I just got one but with it empty and just me I get around 2.5mph. I use an IONIC 125ah lithium. It just sounds like its weak. I have had a lot of trolling motors. Hey Chris, Thanks for the videos - very helpful. I am researching the Old Town AutoPilot 120 or 106. What are the differences from your view? Also, it appears these kyaks have a fair amount of water getting inside compared to other kyaks. Has that been your experience and would you please comment on that. Thanks
@ChrisMitchellFishing
@ChrisMitchellFishing 2 жыл бұрын
The 120 you’ll have spot lock where the 106 won’t have that option. I would go with the 120 over the 106 just for that reason. Yes water would get in pretty easily but if you get the one way scupper plugs that old town sells, it eliminates that problem pretty well.
@thebear1974

Hi Chris, Thanks for all the great vids. Do you like the Old Town better that the Bonafide? I was going to install a motor on a Bonafide. Are you seeing any advantages with your Old Town? Was clearing the grass the biggest issue?
@ChrisMitchellFishing
@ChrisMitchellFishing 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, happy that you enjoy them! I love the Old Town. It definitely has more advantages than the bonafide in my opinion. clearing the grass is a huge one. With the motor being right at your feet, it makes life so much easier. Also the kayak is balanced evenly so the nose doesn't dive forward like the bonafide did. only thing lacking on the oldtown is dry storage space but I'll gladly trade that for the motor where its at any day. I just use the dry bag in the back and its all good!

How you like the kayak so far? Now that is almost a year.. I'm planning on getting one. Can't decide if I should wait for the 2.generattion, so they can fix all the problems like transducer exposed, low speed, spotlock drift, cup holders no drain, no dry storage, after a year, motor slowing down because of the motor brushes worn down... Any other stuff you have noticed? Thanks 👍
@ChrisMitchellFishing
@ChrisMitchellFishing 3 жыл бұрын
I actually sold it not too long ago. I agree with cup holders not having drainage, no dry storage and the exposed transducer. Haven’t noticed the motor brushes being worn down or speed. I would definitely wait till the new model comes out though. They have no choice but to listen on what the anglers have to say about it. It’s all over the fb groups. They definitely take reviews to heart. So no doubt that they will fix those things.

@@ChrisMitchellFishing why you sold it if you don't mind me asking
@ChrisMitchellFishing

Two main reasons is space and if the battery dies I need to paddle back to the ramp. I’ve experienced times where I’m far from the ramp and there’s a head wind and paddling back is rough. Going with a hobie pa14 with a motor guide xi3. That way if the battery dies I have peddles to get back and it’s much easier than paddling. Hope that makes sense.
@FishingFloridaWithKO

@@ChrisMitchellFishing it makes perfect sense actually 😁👍 I'm debating myself as well what to get.. I have a 2017 Hobie Outback Camo edition right now. I love it. But. Not enough room to walk out stand and drifting from my honey hole as I'm catching fish or changing bait etc killing me 🙈 definitely need a spot lock, motor and lots of room to get up and fish..

I can live with those cons or find a solution to remedy them. The only two things I don't like about my perception pescador 120 kayak is that you Absolutely cannot stand in it, and the seat sits to low in the high position. It's an excellent beginners kayak but I'm not a newbie and I am ready for something that is ideal for someone who is at an intermediate level of skill. So yeah I had my eye on the old town autopilot kayak for a minute now and I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on it. I know it doesn't come with a battery which I will pick up a lithium battery. And I was curious to know if you have to have it registered since it has a motor?
@ChrisMitchellFishing
@ChrisMitchellFishing 2 жыл бұрын
I think you’ll be happy with the autopilot! Depending on the state you live in determines if you need to register it or not. More than likely you will need to register it. Here in Florida it was around $30-$40 not too bad.

What kind of kayak do u recommend for a beginner I’m looking at buying a fishing kayak
@ChrisMitchellFishing
@ChrisMitchellFishing Жыл бұрын
I recommend something that’s not too crazy full of features that can get overwhelming but something that will last you for a while. I like the hobie compass. Solid stable kayak that has just enough to enjoy time out on the water and not hurt the wallet too much. The peddle drive is very versatile, which means it won’t get hung up in grass as easily as other peddle drives. I don’t recommend anything that is solely paddling. You won’t be as efficient fishing in that as a peddle drive gives you more freedom.

I mean I get the weight savings from the smaller lithium batteries but really whats that do for performance of the kayak? Anyways nice setup. Also my with my Topwater 120 I went with the Scotty #141 transducer mount for my Garmin. Why do you need a power pole, if you have a spot lock option? As I understand the spot lock keeps you exactly at the spot. Power pole is pointless in that case.

It’s beneficial to have a power pole in the case of the wind going the wrong way you want to fish. Say a piece of structure you want to fish is in front of you and the wind is blowing at your back. When you turn on spot lock, it will want to turn the kayak towards the wind and now that structure is behind you. Power pole makes it easier to fish things in front of you when the wind is at your back.

It defiantly can be especially when the wind is blowing crazy and the wrong way lol. I just get in the water about knee high and it makes it much easier.

Pretty easy. It doesn’t tip a whole lot. So I never felt like it was going to flip even if I just had one foot in the kayak.

I put my snacks in the dry hatch that's next to the seat and I have a yeti bottle for water. That's all I typically need but There is room to put a cooler behind the tackle crate if I move my dry bag in front of my crate. Which is what I'm going to do now.

I said it once and again game over for yak companies Old Town won. Soon they will come up with Yakformers it’s a yak that turns into a full size boat and after that a Yakmarine it’s a kayak that goes underwater and shoots at fish

Why not just buy a john boat, motor& trailer? You would have more room and durability!

I hear ya. Does seem a little ridiculous with a motor and trailer. However with kayak bass tournaments being competitive as they are, having a motor is a good advantage to keep up with the field. It’s way easier to haul, launch and recover from the ramp with the trailer cause of the added gear. This kind of setup is mainly for kayak tournaments and for people that are passionate about kayak tournaments. For fun fishing I have a super light kayak with no motor and I just throw it in the bed if my truck.
