Since it came up in the shop I figured I would share it. When facing surfaces on a bike - bottom brackets and even disc brake mounts - the use of a layout fluid is extremely helpful. If you don’t have layout fluid around then simply grab something every shop has - a Sharpie. I show you how.

Proper tightening technique... You should add spring pressure by holding the nut and turning the handle on the cutting end to add pressure while rotating the cutting tool.

Nice video Rob! I spend hours per bike masking, unmasking, and remasking so that my paint doesn't go where it should. I'm starting to use taps as well as needed. But I like the idea of using a facing tool if time permits to finish the job right so this maybe something to learn in the future.

I would say most shops or high end mechanics who would end up assembling the kind of frames you paint would normally address anything that would be off, but indeed if something came to me already well taken care of in this regard would end up with me recommending the painter highly. Care in work is always seen and appreciated by those who possess the ability to see it.

Great video man! Im an ex-machinist turned bike mechanic as well. Ive been fooling around with bicycles for about 50 years! The frame machining procedures, frame alignment, setting up and adjusting bearing assemblies and wheel building have always been my favorite jobs to do on bikes. Its very satisfying to accomplish these tasks and have a perfect result. Its Really crucial to a smooth, efficient operating bicycle!! It amazes and astounds me that this doesnt get done on newer frames with press fit BBs and drop in headsets, Even on many of the highest end bikes!! The shops Ive worked in dont have those tools for press fit frames. I dont know if they even exist. I really wonder what bike ‘engineers’ and designers are thinking! Especially when we see all the issues they cause and their ‘solutions’ to said problems!! Im sure you have a great knowledge of bearing and fit tolerances as well! Check a PF BB shell with telescoping gage and micrometer sometime!! Dont laugh too hard!! Bike designers dont seem to be wrenching on the stuff they produce either!! I also used to machine carbon satellite components and can spot proper quality in lay ups. Ill never ride a carbon frame or parts unless I can witness my stuff being built!! Ive cut up a few crashed and broken carbon parts and my only observation would be that theres little if ANY QC happening!! Im not the only one to say this. and I NEVER had to be reminded to INSPECT my own work! We even inspected each other’s work in the shop to keep us honest!! Ill only buy METAL frames with threaded BBs and headset cups that press in. Everyone who throws a leg over one of my personal bikes remarks how smooth they ride. They just feel normal and right to me!!! Im just finishing a build of an NOS Italian Ciocc frame with early Super Record components and Im like a kid in a candy store! Why cant bikes be this simple anymore? (We might have a lot less work!)My old steel fixed gear ‘cross bike is my most used bike. Its so smooth and silent. All you hear is the tires on the ground!!

Indeed and agreed. They do make the correct tools for pressfit. I do it to every setup that comes in. I ream and face PF30 and can ream BB30 as well. Long story but I was even able to save a frame whose BB30 shell was too far gone by grinding out enough meat to allow the PF30 ream to clean it up without too high of a chip load on the ream. Saved a frame and luckily the aluminum insert was thick enough to make it possible. As for the engineers not working on the bikes - absolutely. I had to swap a rear shift cable for a rider right before his race. He was in a "new" Trek Madone. Neutral support refused to work on it because they didn't want to "perform open heart surgery" out in the field. I replaced it but it took myself and a helper/holder a little over an hour to do it and in essence involved touching all 4 cables and disassembling just about everything. The racer went on to win but it was immediately obvious that the engineer who thought that was a good idea only thought of racing in the sense that Tour riders just have a backup bike.

PSIMET so the reamers are for metal shells? Are there diamond reamers for carbon shells? Ive machined carbon, carbide doesnt last long. Thats mostly what we struggle with.

Robert Trageser they’re HSS to be honest. They last fine. They’re reamers and most of the time I’m lucky if they’re taking anything off at all. Usually just cleaning up non-concentricity or runout within the layup in the bearing opening. It’s not much but it makes a difference.

PSIMET The machinist in me would never allow me to use fine HSS cutting tools on carbon or any material they’re not designed for.I wont do it. I love and cherish fine tools. Im an old school machinist. Ive spent lots of time making custom cutting tools that are hard to buy. Its bad enough needing to showing bike techs how to use proper cutting tools and practices! I need to set a good example or all my bitching is moot! Its Kind of like them using steel grinding wheels on aluminum! It Drives me crazy!! “We’re just grinding a little bit!!”

Good tip. BUT. Why did it take 9 minutes & 38 seconds to say "Use a sharpie if you don't have the correct layout fluid"?
