I don't really understand why people don't like HD sprites from the mobile/3DS ports. The sprites from the trilogy weren't pixel arts from the beginning. The artist illustrated the sprites just like any other digital arts, and turned into pixels arts to put in the GBA game. There are multiple fanbooks that show the original HD artworks they used for the sprites, and they are used for the mobile and 3DS ports. It's not like they made pixel sprites, and upscaled them. They just used the original HD assets they have. But to be fair, downscaling the sprites to pixels hide the flaws of artworks. Also the color palettes from GBA are limited so it covers a lot more details. I'm not sure why there are missings frames in the mobile/3DS ports, but I think it's either: 1. They just edited the pixel sprites or 2. They were just lazy So if you don't like the original HD sprites, then you gotta blame the artist. Since the artist drew the sprites in that way. Anyways, this was a very good comparision video. Also I'm glad that (if not the very first) I'm one of the first people to rip the assets from the game, it feels good that I was able to help people with the assets I ripped. :)

Small corrections 1:18 Ace Attorney was ported twice to iOS. The first time around, they did use DS assets and kept the pixelated look 1:57 This isn't the 3DS sprites, this is from Apollo Justice HD for iOS/Android, hence the art style change. The sprites used for the 3DS is the same as the new iOS/Android ones, just scaled down and no missing frames

Something I feel noteworthy is there was there is no back lit GBA until the 3rd game. The saturated colors we all know may have just been used to increase visibility on the dark screen, the manual art also seems to support this with it's character portrait's being more naturalistic (and matching up well with some emulator's "color correction" feature).

I prefer the old DS version even it is lower in pixel count. There's a charm to it I guess. The HD in iOS reminds of those fan made, anime visual novel, flash games on newgrounds or something. The 3DS version is a little better fortunately

The 3DS version of AA 1-3 are the only versions I've ever owned. It was nice to see the sprite evolution! I'm surprised to see they dropped the Phoenix waving finger sprite for so long. DD was my first AA game in the series so I didn't even notice when I played the trilogy afterwards. I didn't even realize this particular sprite didn't exist in the trilogy version.

Fun fact about the sentence on 1:17 they actually made a port of the trilogy with the DS sprites on iOS in 2010, only for it to get replaced 2 years later with the bad HD version

On the DS side, I liked it but the buttons on Phoenix right arm are clutched as a shadow, but when he does the read animation, the buttons are actually found missing. If we preference his buttons on the left hand, then where are the buttons when the points? I also like 3DS but the outlines of the filled in color blend in with the shadows but darker, as a painter, when Phoenix does the damage phase, the explosion on the right face makes no sense, as he sweats, the animation stays still, good. Also, in all the animations, we notice that when Phoenix reads, we notice that his hand only moves and not his arm and elbow. Unlike SoJ and DD in Ace Attorney, both of these happen. His arm and elbow move. In GBA, when Pheonix moves his finger, it should have been added to other games of Ace Attorney, this happened in Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice. Also, the background looks different. One thing I noticed in IOS mode, the animations have only 2 frames in the animation. In 3DS, I notice that when Phoenix does the reading, the shadows in the paper don't follow, the shadow animation bump once. The sweating animation looks different to me as well, his height when he is sweating is the same height of him standing. With these animations and errors, the 3DS and GBA are my favorite

I played the first two on 3DS a few years ago, and a little bit of the third. It’s crazy how much more detail I can see on the OLED screen.🤯

Pixel > 3DS > PS4/PC/Switch > IOS I just enjoyed the more simpler look of the pixelated style as it made the characters look more detailed. When you move towards the HD characters the characters look a bit too simple and clean for my liking and it comes off as a bit plain at times.

Well I need something that's easy of my poor little eyes so I found the HD sprites in the trilogy are my favourites with the apollo justice sprites coming in next. But overall, I think they're all just fine.

Honestly I might be biased but I like the pixel sprites of the original DS version the most.

The switch one is all I’ve ever known 😅😅 I only just got the trilogy for Christmas and am only on the final case of the the first game but it’s shaping up to be my literal favorite game/game series I’m now on the last case of trials and tribulations

I kind of feel like the iOS version may have poisoned my preference for the HD sprites because of how poorly they were done in the first attempt. That said the lower resolution of the DS version still has some charm to it that just gets lost when you upscale and clean up the visuals (plus the more limited animation is aided by appearing in lower resolution compared to the Apollo Justice sprites, which are more vibrantly animated and do their higher resolution justice).

I like the 3ds sprites. They look like a solid refinement, and feel most like what the games would have looked like if not for the GBA's limits. Plus, like most 3DS games, it looks way better on a 3DS screen than in this video Edit: I will admit some things dont translate well to the "HD" ports though. The judge's expressions for example have never looked right to me outside of the original GBA/DS version

I prefer the pixelated look since they were originally designed to be downscaled so the lines have a nicer flow to them at the tiny resolution. The HD sprites have some details that are weird asl too, I kinda assumed that phoenix just had cartoony dot eyes and not the creepypasta hyperrealistic textured eyes that he actually had when his resolution was bumped up my headcanon is that pixellated phoenix and the judge are super chill and the HD ones are intimidating and real

Interesting. I've played the GBA and DS ports side by side and never noticed he didn't waggle his finger. What's also interesting is that it appears in the DS archive thing... I forgot what it translates to, but so does every other unused animation, so I guess it's not that revolutionary.

I think Apollo justice HD in 3ds had the best redone sprites

As some of you might have of noticed, the 3DS sprites are from Apollo Justice. I just forgot to clarify, so sorry for the confusion.

I really don't like the traced look (may be its the outlines or colors) of the HD collection sprites. If not the pixelated look, honestly I think a good middle ground, as I saw in this video, was the Apollo Justice HD sprite. Just personal preference, so no one get it twisted.

Personal favorite look is Apollo Justice 3DS. Character art is clean in HD unlike the 3DS trilogy without sanitizing the backgrounds of detail like the modern trilogy ports.

I like the most recent ones, the one for ios goes to fast is weird. But, in music on the contrary, love the way gba sounds. ☔

Played the DS port on iOS (pixelated graphics) and now the Switch version feels off to me. Feels like it’s being run through a smoothing filter. Something about the 3DS version keeps it from having this weirdness.

I have a 3ds and a PC, do you recommend I play the DS, 3ds, or Pc Trilogy version? I own all three, but I really want to get into this series, not sure which one to play thought, also, I'd prefer if someone more educated on this game like you tell me which version to play, because I want to play all 3, but I want to start with the best one, but I'm getting mixed reactions

I think the 3ds one is from the AJ mobile remake.

Trilogy could have been a little better, it doesn't really hold up to Apollo Justice HD and the AAI remasters, it would have been cool if they brought back the finger wagging animations because Phoenix does this in DD and SoJ, I also just think the art style is a little worse, it's fine but AJ HD looks SO damn good, then you have AAI which just went even crazier with the improvements, it's sad that AA Trilogy is basically just a stable port of the mobile version with no sound glitches, no lag or performance issues, and the breakdowns have been restored, no longer neutered by the low FPS and previously mentioned performance issues, it could have been much more. I wish there were mods for AA Trilogy but I know it's hard to figure it all out, probably not even possible to mod it but it'd be cool if a team of people were just like, "we're gonna truly revive the original trilogy with the justice deserves" and just gave the whole game a more consistent look, no wild sprite changes, just improvements to backgrounds that didn't translate well from GBA to DS, and of course way better looking sprites, AA Trilogy looks amateurish and lazy compared to the other remasters despite being the most iconic set of games.

I like the latest version but maybe they should've taken a few more liberties and not be too constricted to how the original sprite was drawn/painted, I guess it's hard to make things not look traced or flat when you're doing just that. Also, they used black on the linework of every character which make colors look more pale by comparison which is weird. If you look at the pixel sprites you'll notice the linework is often colored or a pretty dark gray, which makes the overall art look better imo

There used to be an older version on iOS4 (iphone4/iPod touch) of this game that had the sprite art, but a different control scheme, one which I preferred more tbh.

I think it goes all down to costs. Sometimes they dont have a large budgets for each company so sometimes animations and art are limited. So it's not that bad, as long as it's still expressive and straight to the point, I don't see anything wrong with any of these
