Old West Town Built in Backyard - COOLEST THING I'VE EVER MADE: EP11

Күн бұрын

An amazing backyard western village. Former teacher, Kenneth White spent over 5 years building a replica wild west village from the 1880's right in his backyard. White built everything from scratch including a saloon, a church with beautiful stained glass windows and an old-fashioned western jail complete with a prisoner in the bed. Ever the great teacher, Kenneth used his western village to teach kids about life in the old days. Sadly Kenneth passed away in 2016 and we dedicate this episode to his memory.

I am fortunate to have had a neighbor who also did this...built a Western town on his 50 Calif. acres. I was out riding my black Arab through the apple orchard in bloom. George Smith was a movie scout & bought up many stage pieces. He gradually built a Western town with stuff from known actors's props. Will Rogers famous lariat. EVERY Nat'l. Geographic ever printed, as well as every license plate ever made for this state....he had that next to the barber shop of 1850s. The grand hotel, 2 stories high with authentic 'stuff' to decorate. Many famous actors. Many famous people visited his scheduled tours. Carriages. Gear and tack. Two blocks' worth of offices; hitching posts...THAT is what I rode into that day. Incredible!!! What a strange Feeling!!! I wondered: "Wow! Where did all the townsfolk go? Doors open, hitching posts inviting. Who did this?" George is gone now. He never quite got around to building his 12-guage railroad through Georgetown .... I tell you this because Mr. White did it....and WOW...did it amaze anyone who got to see it!!! George gave tours to local school kids; hosted weddings and vintage car clubs and more. He was just as happy to share his stories with neighbors. I tell you this because Mr. White did the same: telling the old tales; offering the history of the Old West; letting us Experience what it may have been like to LIVE in that time. FASCINATING!

His grandkids must have a blast there. I love his imagination, especially how the rancher must of had a special lady friend or how the cowboy was out in the jail cell to cool off for a couple of days. Got a genuine chuckle out of me. No doubt The Good Lord was thinking about people like the late Mr. Kenneth White when he mentioned people that were the salt of the earth. Treasure our elders, once their gone we won’t see anything like them.

I never thought about it before, but if I ever own a guest house it would be really fun to make it an old west saloon. Entertain downstairs with the bar and tables where we could have drinks, play poker, socialize, party, and bring in food from the main house kitchen, and there would be at least two guest rooms upstairs themed like a fancy brothel. It would be satisfying to have other people visit and enjoy it. I could host parties with a bartender. The saloon in my backyard, an idea to file away in my brain and just maybe pull out someday. Thanks for the inspiration, Mr. White.
