Old World Plaster Texture on Drywall

Now that the Sheetrock is hung, taped, mudded and sanded we are applying an old world European or French Country style texture to many of the walls. The final look of the house is going to involve natural materials like wood and stone and earthy colors. It took a little bit of experimenting but we're really happy with the results. We are doing a variation of skip trowel and knock down techniques to achieve the look we are after.

I admire your perseverance and ability to keep the end goal in mind. No, it’s not a typical homestead house or a log cabin and certainly not a tiny house, but it’s YOUR dream home in a beautiful rustic setting in the mountains. It would be so easy to say “It’s taking too long. Cut corners and let’s sleep in today.” I enjoy your every video and miss both of you if the time lapse grows long. That only tells me you are working hard and the long hours prevent editing. Keep on keeping on!

I have lived with both and particularly when it comes to cleaning smooth walls are much easier. Dust settles in the recessed parts of the texture and is difficult to clean out which could be especially labor intensive on all those high walls. Also any foreign matter like food etc is stubborn to remove from the texture. I do like the look of textured walls though, so if you don't mind the extra work you will enjoy the look of them regardless.

I tried to get my texture guy to do something similar on my walls, but I didn’t know the lingo and couldn’t communicate what I wanted. I ended up paying him to do an almost smooth texture on the whole house. In the living room, I made a texture myself by glazing over the paint and putting painter’s masking plastic on the glaze(very carefully!) and then pulling it off. It turned out looking very cool, but not exactly what I wanted. I’m tired of it after 13 years and my husband doesn’t want me to change it! Someday. You guys are amazing at your willingness to jump in and do what needs done, I love that about you. Looks like you did a good job. Now you can’t say you’ve never done it before, to a lot of things!

My dad used to do it in wet plaster! It was called Stipling, A stiff brush was used to make swirls that were then knocked down after deying some. he would then use a sponge with a contrasting thinned paint color to accent yhe texture.

Hats off to you both! My husband and I did the Faux Plaster, but we started with textured/painted walls. We sanded, then hand troweled 3 thin layers in cross over pattern(X) then burnished the walls for smooth shiny spots on wall that makes the imperfections pop. Our mud had color added to it, so we did not have to paint. I can’t wait to see the final technique once your finished.

I did this to one of my homes but I also put cornmeal in the paint to give if that grit. Then rolled it on and smeared it with the roller. He thought I was lying and I had to explain my technique to convince him.

If you are using 4" casing, your pencil line for stopping your texture should be more like 3" from the stud. You need to account for the 3/4" finish jamb in the doorway. That would move your casing into the opening by about an inch all around.

Great job! Lots of hard work paid off! I'm having my livingroom done like this to match my dining room. The house is a 1932 Craftsman Bungalow and the livingroom has many layers of wall paper that's been painted over many more times. Whoever previously owned the house tried to take the wallpaper off then realized it was on there too well and gave up and painted over it. The walls look like trash, so I figured I'd give it a skim coat, then I figured I'm too busy to do it so I have to hire people so I might as well have them try and match the dining room. It doesn't have to be perfect, it'll add some wonderful character and hide the imperfections on the walls from the transitions of old lath and plaster to the new drywall as well as the scars from where patches of wallpaper has been torn out.

Always prime your walls, doesn’t matter if you are going to paint, wall paper or texture, not priming means the wall draws to much water out, uses more paint, the texture may not bond well, wall paper doesn’t stick well when hanging and can be difficult to to remove in the future.

I love that you're trying to give your house some character, with a rustic feel. I've always prefered older houses as they have character and charm, but with that usually comes cold, damp and draughty houses. With your house, it's the best of both worlds, rustic character and charm but well insulated and easy to keep warm/cool. The house looks fantastic and you're doing an amazing job. Looking forward to the homestead and canning videos making a return.....when is the kitchen going in? :)

I always love it when a lay person says "I've never done texturing but I watched several You Tube videos and it can't be that hard", as a tradesman with 25 years experience!!! 25 years of experience can be replaced by a couple you tube videos, LMAO!!!

Well it wasn't that hard and I'm happy with the results and it didn't take me 25 years to figure it out 🤷‍♂️

Wow, personally that's a lot of extra work putting texture on everything. I would think just putting it on a accent wall would give it that charm you want. But it's your home and it's you doing the work so make it exactly like you envision it! Loved your not your cup of tea but it's my case of beer comment!!!

Personally I would have left the walls smooth.. Not only does knockdown make it look like a production build, but it collects dust like non other making the walls look super dirty...

I've never seen a production build with textured walls. Maybe that's just where you are located?

@@diannt9583 production builders usually do a sprayed on sand or orange peel texture. It's fast, cheap, and hides a lot of flaws.
