It's interesting to hear what the WD6003FFBX-68MU3N0 sound like; these are rebadged HGST Vela drives. In contrast, Western Digital started taking the same HDAs and using their own firmware and heads in them, similar to what Toshiba had been doing for their DT02 series. Those are codenamed Avalon CR (6 TB 5,640 RPM), Avalon C5 (8 TB 5,640 RPM) or Avalon C (7,200 RPM). I have one of those, a WD80EAZZ-00BKLB0. The spinup sounds (except the start) somewhat the same, but the seek test is identical to that of an Apollo CR, which is a bit anticlimatic.
@Struukbessen2 жыл бұрын
Yeah WD now uses their own technology in HGST HDAs for some drives. I thought that too, when I saw a WD Red WD60EFZX (Avalon C5). It has WD style SMART attributes and PCB number.

The WD40PURZ-85AKKY0 is an ApolloCR platform based HDD with a 64MB cache in which I have the WD Red Plus WD40EFZX (ApolloCR) with a 128MB cache and does a similar shutdown behavior as the WD40EFRX (Apollo) only when the drive enters into sleep mode (e.g. heads park then automatic shutdown). The screeching noise on these ApolloCR only happen at hard shutoff (e.g. drive unplugged or manually powered off). The funny thing is with a WD blue 4TB WD40EZAZ-00SF3B0 (Venice) HDD in my PC does the screeching noises in all aspects of shutdown. Just an FYI the screeching sounds are the normal sounds of the head locking mechanism while the drive powers off.
@Struukbessen2 жыл бұрын
Ye, the ApolloCR is a quite new family. I read somewhere that many HDDs turn the kinetic energy of the spindle into electric energy to park the heads when shutdown suddenly. If you unsolder a specific coil on the PCB, the HDD will die on the next sudden shutdown with stucked heads on the platters. How is the performance of the WD40EZAZ drive, since it's a SMR one?
@zotmidi7472 жыл бұрын
@@Struukbessen it works fine! The performance of that drive is just like my WD20SDZW My passport external HDD when rewriting files because of it also being SMR. Im used to SMR performance although this drive may not be the best but works perfectly fine and efficiently when dumping and reading files!
@TheDragonFire1232 жыл бұрын
Interestingly enough, it seems the drive itself reports 128 MB cache! At least, according to Victoria for my own WD20PURZ-85AKKY0. I would love to see if this is true or not.

@Struukbessen2 жыл бұрын
The WD2003FYYS had an IBM OEM label in that area, normally the capacity is shown in that revision, too. The Samsung HD501LJ is in good condition. It has 7 reallocated sectors and 63400 power on hours. A full erase and sector scan didn't increase the number of reallocated sectors.
@XLGaming2 жыл бұрын
@@Struukbessen good to hear, my HD321KJ doesnt have a single reallocated sector, but a scan with Victoria Disk Manager showed 2 slow, 600ms sectors. I managed to speed the sectors up by writing to them a few times, which magnetized them enough so they're only 50ms sectors.

Yes, it is - visually it appears to be from Seagate's Lombard family, which suggests that it was originally an ST4000DM000 or something very similar. The mention of "Product of Malaysia" is almost certainly wrong - most likely China or Thailand is correct.
