Welcome to Auto Chatter! Todays vid is part two of the Oldsmobile 442 series! We saw the classic American muscle ones in part one, but what came later? Well thats a tale of weight gain, weight loss, lower horsepower, sticker packages, and more! Its not all bad, so join me for the good...and not so good 442 and Hurst Olds models from 1973 to 1991!

When I got out of the Navy, I started selling cars at my hometown Chevy Dealer. I sold a bright red late model 91 Quad 442. They kept it for years, as I saw it down the street from my parents house. Even though they made more, the SCX was more forgotten to me. ScX appeal...LOL...Clever!

Starting in 1990, when Oldsmobile brought back the 442, this should've been an opportunity for Chevy to bring back the chevelle, Pontiac to bring back the GTO and Buick to bring back the GSX, even on the A platform.

Thank you for the video. You did an excellent job. One correction you said Oldsmobile Calais when you had footage of the Ciera. I think you meant to say the split off the Cutlass Supreme and Cutlass Ciera. The footage was great. The images were great. The information was interesting. It was hard talking about the late 70's models I am sure. The part of the 80's and 90's was quite good. I was impressed you mentioned Achieva and explained the package. You mentioned Pontiac and Grand Am too. That Quad 4 was used in Chevrolet Beretta GTZ. I also enjoyed how you threw Buick Regal Grand National into the video during the 80's. GM fest indeed. I was sorry to hear the part one was not getting strong views. You do the videos for the passion of cars.

I just learned what 442 actually means the other day. To be fair, the 442 was before my time. Well, not the 80s model, but is that really a 442? I always assumed 442 was the engine displacement. Haha, oh well.

Kind of sad to see how far the 442 (and all of the malaise era cars) fell, but that's history as it happened and you can't cover a car model without covering them all. I did like the waterfall grill, even the upright one- very stylish for the time, as were the fancy factory wheels. I did see quite a few of these later 442's on the roads around here but they were gone from the 'stoplight races' and those who had good future vision were instead beginning to buy up the original muscle cars which could still be had at very reasonable prices- another era coming to an end. I don't recall any of the rarer ones around here. I really think that Olds could have done great had they made an over-the-top performance version, but I'm sure that GM's aged corporate board would have quashed the idea simply because Olds wasn't 'that' kind of car brand, and they weren't going to allow Olds to upstage Buick, Pontiac, and Chevy. There was still a small market segment who wanted performance and the 442 image would have been the perfect fit as the usual choices of Camaro and Mustang were not fast anymore. Olds had done that once before with their original "Rocket" OHV V-8 engine so the precedent was there, but the chance for greatness was lost, and Olds sadly faded away.
