Watching a lot of videos like this, you start to develop a feel for which games were popular outside the US vs among Americans. And Micro Machines is one of those franchises that comes up among British reviewers. And 9 times out of 10, looking up such a game reveals that it has British developers - sure enough, CodeMasters is from England. It's interesting how things fall geographically like that. I also notice this with games like Speedball II (English developers), Cannon Fodder (English developers), Lemmings (Scottish developers). These were the games we played when growing up here in Australia, on our PCs and our 8-bit systems like Commodores, but aren't spoken about with nostalgia by the Americans. I identify with British video game channels more as a result. I think the distinction is blurred with more modern games. Emblematic of this is that I don't think people realise that Rockstar (same people who made Lemmings) are British and their modern games look American and are probably way more popular there.

I was definitely a Super Sprint and Super Offroad kid - but I see in this list you really only have a handful of archetypes: RC Pro Am types, Super Offroad types, Pole Position types, and Excitebike stands alone. You may be able to break out the Pole Positions into shooting/no shooting, like Roadblasters or Mach Rider vs Rad Racer, for instance.

Yes, agreed. I haven't played all of the racing games on this least, but many of the F1 racers felt similar while this one stood out. I prefer it over Rad Racer. I like the "RPG" elements of improving your car. Out of the F1 type games I've played it's the one that added in the most video game elements. I can also appreciate a game that balances difficulty progression well. With the shittiest car you can just hold accelerate the whole time & not worry about corners being too sharp because your max speed doesn't have you go off the side, but as the game progresses & you use faster cars (& need to, to win) I find myself strategically needing to take my "foot" off the gas or use the brake well.

The major difference between RC Pro Am II and the original is the ability to race two players simultaneously around a fast-moving track, which I think was pretty unique in the 8-bit world at the time

I have to put original radio racer at number 1. It has faster feeling game play, better sound, better music, better controls, and better graphics. Part 2 did have the better ending theme though. It is pure simplicity (never understood how they never tryed to port to other 8 bit systems like atari). It is quite unique, the opponents behavior it's defined by colors, when we collide against other cars, we have a small chance to recover control.
