Old Things Never Die

Күн бұрын

Today I'm working on a vintage and rare toy, USAF GEMINI X-5 space ship, made in Japan in 1960's by Masudaya Toys Co.
I bought it on Ebay for 30 $.
The seller told me that he didn't know if it worked but by disassembling it, I had the bad surprise to discover it had already been modified before.
The engine was missing and the bulbs no longer worked.
It took me a month to restore but it was worth it, watch till the end to see this beautiful old toy in action.
Thanks a lot for watching !

@katehucks774 21 күн бұрын
I’m curious if the spinning astronaut is original… The figure itself seems to be made out of plastic and seems modern, but the mechanism for spinning him looks like it was already there, so I’m guessing the original piece was missing and couldn’t be sourced? Or perhaps the mechanism was meant for something else that was missing?

This was spectacular restoration work! I had a toy vaguely similar to this in the late 60's, "Billy Blastoff" I think it was called. A white plastic Space Craft, a moon crawler, I think a Saucer, and a bunch of ancillary parts, all powered by batteries you put in the astronaut's backpack/oxygen case on his spacesuit. Haven't thought about that in decades!😊

FINALLY! A channel that features skill, craftsmanship and the basic premise that shows you "the right tools for the right job"! I really LOVE that you powder coat the majority of this project. As a person that knows full well how fragile spray paint can be before it's had 30 days to fully cure, it's great seeing someone make that extra effort to put a durable finish on his work. Not saying spray paint is junk, but for things that are going to be knocked about, you cannot beat powder coating. Your use of spay paint on the finer details is PERFECTO! Chef's kiss! Your handwork with the "rivets"...I'm gob-smacked at how well you applied that marker finish. Awesome job!

It is clear you are a master painter. The precision location of the white dots which were most likely hand painted at the factory by Japanese craftsman using a brush and your reproduction using a pen was amazing. I too am 62 and remember these "cheap" toys in the store still being out of reach for my family. I love them now more than ever. When in Japan, I saw many on shelves as displays of the kinds of toys that excited the Japanese as well. As interesting is the boxes they came in. The original Japanese market boxes are as cool as you might imagine.

Oh Gods! I am in awe of the level of craftsmanship and the toy itself, as a product of so many technological operations. I'm a member of Generation Z, and the entirety of my childhood plastic toys (even including the computer and game consoles) do not contain as much high-quality metal as this item. And all these mechanisms and designs were designed and put into mass production in a country that 15 years ago was ruins without significant deposits of metals and energy. Surely in its time this toy was a gift worth as much as an “incredible” $1.7. But now it is an invaluable asset of human history.

When I was a young boy, my parents took me to the market and bought me a tin motorized robot. I loved it, but it broke in a year or so. I took it apart, and found that some parts of it were made from recycled tin cans, because the original pictures drawn in the tin cans were still visible in the inner surface of the tin parts. As you were disassembling the Gemini rocket toy, I was half hoping to see "good quality canned peach"written on the inside. I loved the video, supreme work as always. ❤

$30 is such an amazing deal for this - looking at them on eBay right now they're selling for 5-10x that much. Awesome find and beautiful restoration. Also, I wasn't alive during the days of the Space Race, but what a time to be alive it had to have been when everyone was so transfixed on the final frontier. 🌌⭐
