Unfortunately in real life, sole people actually take Mel’s side even though he is full of bs, because they, too hate the other kids. In real life people don’t stand in solitary against the sociopath. The few honest people who tell the truth about Mel are the scorned ones.

Mel obviously yearns for social acceptance, he seems to suffer social anxiety or a lack of socialization, to an extent. It would appear he is attempting to use the shock value of possible gossip to insert himself into the group, and his obvious stepping into the circle shows he thinks holding knowledge the others don't will make him valuable to them. Shown at the stairwell, he confidently tells them he knows something they don't. He either feels superiority over them or takes happiness in helping them, the precieved acceptence, and thinking they would appreciate the heads up on the exam. Judging by his reaction I would lean towards the latter. The lack of social awareness shows in how quickly he attempts to buddy-buddy with Dean, possibly taking Dean's momentary confusion at Susan's abrupt departure as a sign of at least semi-acceptance since he didn't immediatly walk off. Taking age into account I don't disparage Dean in his responses but point out how his own immaturiry contributed what could be best described as Mel's eventual mental breakdown at the dance. I think this was considered by the makers as they said at the end "would you have helped him?". Unless Mel is a completly amoral, manipulative politician I believe he was earnest with Dean about his passion with football, he a,misjudged, attempt to open up and bond with someone he admired. Though I believe his motives in telling Dean about Andy was more in the vindictive nature due to the snubbing he recieved it would not be out of reality to believe he honestly meant well, if he's to be believed. Lifelong intrest in the sport, watches practice, and[because of aforementioned social ineptitude] acts with a papparatzi like interest in his high school team. In an idealic situation Dean might have reccomended he try out for the team, mentioned Mel's football interest to coach. Possibly join the school newspaper as a sports reporter. The fact that he followed up on Mel's story shows he too believed Mel was being at least somewhat honest. Though letting Andy play rests the blame on him, not Mel, for what it contributed to losing the game. The dance was both their faults, everyone lost reason there.

I once got a call from a girl, and she was really angry at me. She was telling me how it was none of my business who she is friends with, and I need to leave her business alone. I was munching on a Kebab, wondering what the hell she was going on about. It took me about 5 seconds to realize who had put her up to this. It took about 5 seconds for her to apologize, because she realized she had been had by a jealous guy. Added to this how people want to believe the worst of everyone, you can imagine how impossible social life has become these days. This time she believed me. The 20 other times people believed this strange guy who always does the wrong thing. They want to, and that's it. There's no going back. People truly are awful and disgusting, and too many don't deserve to live in a society.

People like that are very annoying. I would not want them around. In fact, I think I have met a few and told them to leave me alone and there was one woman in particular who drove me mad (because she was a relentless bully who gossips and makes it a point to insult people she dislikes within their earshot among other rude things); and that almost made me act out aggressively towards her. But, I'm glad I didn't because I would've gotten into big trouble if I did. I'm not going to get into specific details online because it's not good for me to obsess about that and it's too personal, but I'm glad that person is not in my life anymore. Same with the other similar people.

Here is what I think happened afterwards: Mel was severely beaten by the football team and hospitalized for the next few months. Dean was convicted of aggravated assault and sent to reform school until his 21st birthday; Susan waited for him and married him after his release. The other team members were convicted of aggravated assault and sent to reform schools; most of them joined the military afterwards except for Andy who had both of his legs amputated slightly above the knee after being hit by a car; Mel was the one who drove the car yet was never arrested for the crime as he was never apprehended. Dean and Susan moved to Rhode Island where Dean became a firefighter and Susan was a homemaker. They had four children; Ruth, Gwendolyn, Sapphire, and Dean Jr. Mel tried to get his revenge on everyone who had beaten him over the years and successfully did so with most of the team. Mel became a drifter of sorts because of his raging sociopathy and was barely able to keep a job; he was also divorced and had a daughter named Elaine. His ex-wife and daughter moved back to Elaine’s hometown after their divorce and he never saw them again. Mel tried once more to get his revenge on Dean and nearly succeeded, however, he was killed after Susan stabbed him several times in self-defense after he attempted to rape her. Dean and Susan moved to Georgia afterwards where Dean retired from being a firefighter in 1995 and they lived happily ever after. Andy, on the other hand, was placed in an institution for people with disabilities after his legs were amputated and he lived there until he died of cancer in 1974.

Interesting follow-up: Mel started the young republican,s club the following year . Went to Georgetown, got his law degree and eventually become part of the Nixon administration. After doing a 9 month bid for his role in the Watergate break-in, Mel mysteriously disappeared for 40 years. He surfaced again, and was last seen with Roger Stone in January 2021 near the Capital building in Washington DC.
