Curious that half a world away the Chinese were using the same construction methods employed by the Swedes to build junks. There is a recent article in ‘Wooden Boat’ showing how this is being done today. The bottom planks are bent and edge-fastened to define the shape and frames and upper planking added later.

Congratulations Olha! Good news, even about a someone you have never met always lifts the spirits! Could you help me understand the 'Dutch building methods' that you mentioned? There are now 3 books about the Dutch maritime industries in my book collection but nothing mentions specific details on construction. I only speak english so can you recommend some good books... and also about the 'Baidarka' as well.... I am half Ukrainian and would like to read about and understand any Slavic boatbuilding designs. I will retire in a few short years and am interested in building small boats in my time and now am curious if I could apply 16th century methods to 21st century boats of modest size. Please make a video or two explaining this interesting and practical bit of history. Thank you, and Good luck!

What strikes me, watching this old, original XVI and XVII century ships, found at well preserved state, is how mediocre the quality of woodworking is on them. You can tell the difference between the new parts added during restoration (much higher quality) and the original ones. And I am not talking about carved ornaments, but about the structural and functional pieces. Like the water pump, made of a log with the bark still in place, or crudely chiseled beams, etc. Obviously, they didn't have modern power tools, like planers, so making a perfect straight beam would be probably quite difficult with what they had, but even the chisel and saw cuts are very crude and careless. Even late XVIII and early XIX century ships (still pre-power tools) had much higher quality of woodworking.
@fredhocker2010
@fredhocker2010 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, the bark is left on the pump for functional reasons (the log will split in use if the bark is removed). The surface finish on the ship today looks much more uneven than it was originally, due to erosion of the top 10-15 mm of surface while the ship was underwater (which is why the new timber looks much smoother). There was a consistent practice of removing sawmarks to leave smooth surfaces, chamfering edges, etc., more less at the same level as one sees in later pre-power tool ships (at least in the original timbers I have examined in wrecks and preserved ships). I think the surface finish was a little higher on British-built warships, and British builders achieved much more uniform dimensions, while Dutch builders regarded that level of finish and regularity as a wasteful extravagance. It all depends on how you define quality.
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov 2 жыл бұрын
So it's true! But I think that the speed of construction can also be to blame for this. And also economical use of wood, because it was precious then...
@fredhocker2010
@fredhocker2010 2 жыл бұрын
@@OlhaBatchvarov It is a popular myth that Vasa was built in a hurry, but compared to ships of similar size built in the Low Countries, it was built relatively slowly, taking a year and a half to finish main hull construction. The standard of finish is typical of Dutch-built ships in this period. The Dutch were very concerned about efficient use of materials, and so they did not always remove sapwood and left waney edges on many larger timbers. For the same reason, they did not bother with consistent dimensions, so the deck beams, for example, vary in width based on the size of the trees used. Where surfaces are finished, they are finished as well as on any other ships I have looked at. The sides and bottoms of the deck beams are flat and smooth, with a moulding planed into the bottom edges, as just one example.
