My mothers' side of the family is from there: Surnames are Bond and Reynolds. My family and I will be passing through there next month and will stop and visit the familial cemetary in Olive Hill for the first time. We're excited to visit!

I've been down there recently. I have a lot of family still in the area. They have been tearing down old buildings and building new business, trying to improve it. A lots changed from my childhood when I use to visit.

This is where my Dad grew up, he was only 44 when he passed, he had one brother 2 sister now have all passed. His name was Gary Maddix. He love his guns, making wood art like pocket knives, well really anything in wood. Also enjoyed making leather items from wallets knife cases, he was a great Artist. I have to say I’m proud of him. I wish he live a longer life. God Bless ✨🙏✨

One time I read a news article in the news paper where a lady said something to the effect of “we need to get the trash off the streets and I’m not just talking about the garbage,” as if to say the folks that hang out downtown are trash. When I was 19, me and my husband at the time moved into our first apartment downtown. We walked everywhere because neither of us drove. So when I read that article it broke my heart. People do the best they can with what they’re given, and instead of calling people trash, we should be helping them. Mr. Barker said in this video that it’s hard for people to thrive in Olive Hill because there are no jobs. Sometimes, a young person’s only option is to live downtown until they’re able to find work or something better. People who live down town are human beings with feelings. To the person who wrote that article years ago calling people trash, be a kinder, more compassionate human and maybe you’ll start to witness the change you wish to see in Olive Hill. It has so much potential. But it will take people coming together as a community and treating one another with respect and compassion. ❤

Can anyone comment on the abandoned Freidrichs plant west of town? Was this formerly a steel mill or what happened to the plant, when did it clise etc

Hello! I'm not very familiar with this area as I was an out of town student when this was made and no longer reside in kentucky, but I'll try to answer your question to the best of my ability. The Freidrichs plant was first established as a brickyard. According to Abandoned Online, the facility was reused in 1988 for the Consolidated Technology Corporation to build specialized air conditioning and heating systems who then closed it in 2002. The Daily Independent announced in 2016 that the property was for sale. It might have been bought by Mountain Enterprises for the Valley Quarry - Mountain Materials? Hard to tell from the google profile if it really is the same place or not. Hope that helps!

We have been looking for a retirement property. We found a possible property near Olive Hill, KY. I was excited when I saw this video, I through it would promote Olive Hill. This video actually made me less inclined to move to this area. If I was part of the Chamber of Commerce for Olive Hill, I would try to get this video removed and create a video that promotes this little town. I just can't even understand why you would want a video of all the things that are wrong and dying?

Hi, J Worrell! So I realize now that this is something I should put in the description of the video when I uploaded it so long ago, but this was just a small project for a college assignment that I did with several classmates and is not officially associated with the city of Olive Hill. I'm sorry if it gave you a negative perspective of the city. We were inexperienced at the time and were looking to do a challenging video project which ended up being a documentary. I highly recommend looking to more professional videos made about the city as we only focused on a couple of residences and therefore is not an accurate depiction. Sorry for the misunderstanding!

@@keriproductions1105 The video was very well done. Very good camera work and editing. However, I recommend you take down the video because a person like me who loves in South Carolina can access this video. It would be a very valid project for a class assignment if only your class saw it, but being on youtube creates a much much larger potential audience, and thus more potential negative view of your city.

@@jworrell4593 I understand your concern and later today I will see what I can do to make it more clear that this is not official and only for an assignment. However, I will not be removing this video as this channel serves both as a portfolio for me and as a library for if I need to access past projects. There is no copyrighted material and nothing inappropriate about this video and therefore does not break KZfaq's terms and conditions. As long as terms and conditions are being met, creators are free to upload whatever they want to on youtube. And even if this video somehow gets taken down, I will dispute the claim and reupload it. I'm sorry you feel negatively about it, but that is all I have to say about the matter.

Visiting Olive Hill and Carter Caves SP in August 2023. Like a lot of small towns in eastern KY Olive Hill has challenges, however climate change is making many places (Florida, Arizona, Texas etc) unliveable, they are even running out of water. There will be millions of climate refugees over the coming decades, Eastern Kentucky is well positioned to receive them with a low cost of living, plenty of water and a mild climate. The question is whether eastern Kentucky has the foresight to see what is coming and create welcoming places for everyone. If towns want to grow they have to be accepting of different cultures and ways of life.
