Great for plowing small areas, and for keeping dead furrows from showing up where I don't want them, the White 6342 roll over plow gets to go to work. My 1800 C series diesel with front wheel assist is the tractor of choice this time around. It was a breezy beautiful day to be out on an open tractor.

Holy Smokes, I thought that tractor was lost to time! So surprised to see it up and still working! My father, Lester Monroe and my uncle Roy Monroe bought her from Francis Platte Oliver in Mason Michigan spring of 1964 with the loader. They owned and operated Monroe Brothers Lumber, south of Webberville, Mich. My brothers and I along with two cousins have loaded a LOT of logs and moved a lot of sawdust with that beast. It also powered the sawmill via flat belt with a rear mounted pulley one spring season, as we were up-grading the mill with new equipment. Plenty of power on the mill! My dad, Lester, Uncle Roy and Uncle Matthew Monroe did the axle repair in our mill building around summer of 1968, I believe. MAN WHAT A TREAT TO SEE IT!!!! I'm telling my brothers !!!! LOL

I find that amazing as Oliver started life in agriculture as a plow maker. They patented a new concept called the "chilled bottom" bcuz they knew soil was hard on them. That turned into a huge industry for them.

Thanks for another great video! That steering wheel center cap is unique. Out of all of my exposure to Olivers, the only other one of those I have seen was on a checkerboard grill 550. I'm assuming it was original to the tractor, everything else about it was, and it only had 900 ish hours on it. Both of my 1800 B's have their original center caps, which are black background with the Oliver shield in orange, not the small full Keystone and shield like yours. I miss reading your articles in the HPOCA magazine, you did an excellent job.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I have since learned that center cap was used on early 55 series Olivers, before they switched to the Char-lynn steering motor. I would say it was swapped, which would explain why it takes so many revolutions to steer from one end to the other. The fwa tractors need more oil volume to turn.

That sounds wonderful pulling those furrows. I know little about these tractors but did recognize the style engine. My step father had one of these in two wheel drive. It sets beside an old barn with the injector pump robbed(presumably), and some obvious wheel bearing issues? Apparently (according to a forum) these things had fewer mains and did not like to be lugged.

Hi Chris. We had an 1800 but I don't know which letter designation. We bought it at Platt's used a semi-mounted 5-16's plow behind it. We only had it for 2 or 3 yrs. Oliver came out with the 1850 and Dad went up to Platts and traded the 1800 for the 1850. I thought well that was a dumb thing to do, boy, was I surprised, the 1850 was a least a third more power than the 1800.

So if you ever want to sell it.....haha!! The history on it just adds to the cool factor. I like how it handles that roll over plow. I cannot believe the huge difference in your soil type and close together like that.

@@ThatOliverGuyChris I see your 1800 did not have a oil pressure gauge in the dash from the factory. I see the external one mounted on the side. The one I just restored didnt either but someone hacked a hole in the dash at one point and stuck a cheap automotive oil psi gauge in there. So I fixed up the whole and put in Oliver style gauges so it looks like a 1850 dash now.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 жыл бұрын
They originally came with only idiot lights for oil and amps. They both work on mine, but the oil light doesn't kick on until 5 psi, fine at idle but death under a load. We added the gauge to an existing hole so we could keep the dash original

I have no idea how many were made. I find them for sale from time to time. There were a couple of 4 bottoms that sold near Grand Rapids last year, one had slat bottoms. I think they brought around a grand each. I've got company photos of a 6 bottom version, now that would be a lot of weight hanging on the back of a tractor! And thanks! Gotta keep raising that bar, that's why I started low. 😂

@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 жыл бұрын
There were 3 revisions of the 1800, and they ended up calling them A, B, and C to help differentiate between them. The A was the original, then with the B they increased engine displacement for more power, and the C series got improvements to the transmission and hydraulics. There were cosmetic changes between each version as well. Today they would just give it a completely different model number.

New subscriber. Love your channel. You always use the term “front wheel assist” is that because it was a less robust version of modern 4 wheel drive system on tractors ?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 жыл бұрын
It has been an industry term for a long time. I think it comes from being able to turn it on and off, and from other manufacturers that had to put torque limiters on the front axle because they used their engine block as a front frame. Too much power and it could tweak the alignment of the crankshaft. Oliver originally advertised it as 4 wheel drive. The industry later gave that term to the large articulated tractors like my 4-225, which are always 4 wheel drive, there's no way turn it off. Mechanical Front Wheel Drive is another common term for them, even though they're not like a car with just the front wheels providing power.

That Oliver Guy - Thanks that makes sense. I remember running an old JD with hydraulic front assist. It was activated by a simple toggle switch. If I remember correctly we just used it in slippery spots in the fields.

Can you explain differences between the A, B, and C models? Thanks
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 жыл бұрын
The A series, which was of course first, had slightly different styling, using 'checkerboard' decals on the side panel instead of the white name spear. The 1800 A gas tractor set a fuel economy record for gasoline powered tractors that has never been broken. The B series featured some styling changes, including the white name spear on the side panel, which was a feature of the recently acquired Cockshutt tractor line. Engine displacement and horsepower was increased on the both the gas and diesel engines. The 1800 B was the first use of the 310 diesel, and was the first to offer front wheel assist as an option. (There were a few A series made with FWA that were put out for testing) The C series kept the same engines as the B series, improvements were to the hydraulic system and the transmission. The hydraulic filter was moved from the left side to the front. The transmission was now pressure lubricated and filtered, and could be checked at one plug, whereas the A and B had 3 different checkpoints for the transmission and rear end. In the styling department, tilt steering was added, and the throttle was moved from under the steering wheel to the side of the dash. The easiest way to tell which is which is by the serial tag. There are 2 lines of numbers, one is the serial number, the other is the specification number, or model. The first 2 digits of the specification number tell which version it is. 18 = A series, 28=B series, and 38=C series. This also applies to the 1900, except it is 19=A, 29=B, and 39=C.

Hey Chris, Nice Video. I have a question. After working your Tractor, Do you run it at idle to let it cool down, or do You Just shutting it off? Thank You for any Information
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 жыл бұрын
I always let my tractors idle for a few minutes after they have been working. After working hard, there are parts of the engine that are above the boiling point of the coolant, but the coolant is moving and taking that heat away before it can get hot enough to boil. If the engine is shut off right away, the coolant stops moving, but keeps absorbing more heat until it does boil. The boiling action cuts down on the surface area that is in contact with coolant , and then that part of the engine (usually the head, near exhaust ports) really can spread its heat, causing expansion, cracks, and accelerate the breakdown of gasket material.

Oliver made some upgrades during the run of the 1800. To distinguish them from each other they added a letter suffix to each version. Obviously the A was the first version, they improved the engine and changed the styling, so those became the B series, and transmission and hydraulic upgrades made for the C series. Today a company would just give them new model numbers each time they made a change.
