I found a bad bearing on my 830, so while it's in the shop I thought I'd do a walk around of the machine while giving some history on it. Was it built by Oliver, or by Fox? Watch for the answer!

My family had an Oliver 840 and 3 different foxes, an spf, super d, and a max 1, and a 6650. There was a dealer in Indianapolis named sharp brothers, they were an Oliver dealer and a fox dealer. They were also neighbors of ours as they farmed in Lizton Indiana and we in Jamestown Indiana. Mr sharp told my father that when Oliver made a deal with fox to copy their chopper, they had sharp bros bring a fox from there dealership to copy. As you say, fox did not make them but Oliver made them to fox specs. We interchanged many parts on the ones we had.

I asked one of the Sharps, and he confirmed what you said. I've often wondered if Fox knew what Oliver had done, and if there was any kind of agreement. My chopper has Fox cylinder knives in it, that's how close they copied it.

You'll use it. I kept an old JD chopper around to chop up windrows that had gotten too much rain on them. I just turned the spout about 45 degrees and blew it back on the field. Best regards from Indiana.
@ThatOliverGuyChris3 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I've had to bale up spoiled hay just to get it off the field. Chopping it and spreading it out is a much better option.

@@ThatOliverGuyChris Cool, thanks for the reply. Plus, you get the added benefit of the fertilizer return. That thing's a nice find. I know not much about Oliver except people who like them REALLY like them. I've been enjoying your tour, thanks.

Oliver made choppers? This is the first one I've ever seen
@ThatOliverGuyChris2 жыл бұрын
In the 1950s they made a smaller chopper. I've got one of those that I want to restore someday.

Cool Chris!!! Now they say Agco, or whatever they're marketing under... seems like Massey is the forage division. Check SHOUP for the pickup teeth. They've got a pretty good selection. And inexpensive 😎

Straight out cool. I didn't even know Oliver sold a chopper. I assume your family was a Oliver/White/Moline dealer? I grew up on a Oliver farm but by the time I was ready to farm on my own, White was coming out and I didn't trust the outcome. Started out with IH and eventually transitioned to John Deere. You should get together with Jake Ziegler. We just enjoy watching he and his family using older but extremely well maintained Oliver/White equipment to farm a good bit of acres.

I watch Jake too. I'd do a collaboration with him, but the distance makes it tough. Hopefully someday.

Hey Chris, I don't want to argue with an expert, but we ran Fox choppers for years before buying a New Holland 717 I think it was. LOL!! If that isn't a Fox, Oliver made a damn good knock off! LOL!!
@ThatOliverGuyChris5 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what they did. I got my story directly from an Oliver territory servive rep. The self propelled shows more differences since the frame and drive train were from the Oliver 525 combine.

Dale your right that is one spot on for looking like a fox, even their sp looked like a fox especially the corn head just missing the orange paint
@scruffy61515 жыл бұрын
I worked for a farmer that had a 1,000 rpm fox chopper pulled by a 2- 120 White. Spray paint that fox orange lol looks alot like the fox. If you ever what to know how to set the cutting bar for the knives let me know i can help you there is a right way and wrong way. You do not need the tractor hooked up to sharpen knives. As rusty as those knives are it would not hurt to touch them up a little. If it works anywhere near like what a fox does you got a good buy. The gear boxs is for the length of the chop the higher you go with gears the longer the chop is because, it feeds it faster through the knives Brings back good memory looking at that chopper.

@ThatOliverGuyChris5 жыл бұрын
Hesston did buy Oliver's baler line, but I never heard what became of the choppers. It's possible it could have been part of the deal. Ill see if I can find a 7020 to compare it to.

White Motor, parent company of Oliver in the 60s and 70s did. Does that count?
@SOU69003 жыл бұрын
@@ThatOliverGuyChris 😆 I guess it could, but not really the same as something that was designed and built by Oliver. To be honest I always thought White Motor company was separate all together from the ag company.
@ThatOliverGuyChris3 жыл бұрын
For the most part they were separate. When they were working on developing the Corporate tractor, one of the engines they were developing was a V8 diesel that could be used in both trucks and high horsepower tractors.
