I am not an Oliver Guy but, it looks like One of these Super 99s could drag an R or ‘80 all over.

The engine is a 3-71, probably fitted with an "N" series head--the 4 valve head instead of the original 2 valve, for better scavenging and more power, and these are NOT "supercharged" at all. They are 2 strokes, and the blower on the side (or on top on "V" type versions) of the engine merely supplies "scavenging" air to blow the burnt gases up and out through the exhaust valves when both the valves and air intake ports are open at the bottom if the piston's strokes. This type of "uniflow" scavenging is called the "Clark Cycle". These are amongst the most efficient diesels on the planet, but actually, the simple "loop scavenged" design, using intake and exhaust ports (called the "Day Cycle") is even more efficient due to better breathing because of no valves, and less mechanical losses due to no valvetrain. The 4-51 and 2-51 Detroits (rare!) used the loop charged Day cycle and were awesome performers. Still, this uniflow design is showing it's merit here---just balls to the wall, unstoppable power. No 3 cylinder 4 stroke, even twin turboed, can match this! Rick Delair.

Nice! My friend has 5 of these, all restored, and he brought 4 of them to the pull tonight. He always wins first, second, and third in his class, whether it be 14500 lb, or Detroit Shootout.

Its a 3 cylinder 71 series, so that makes it a 3-71 just to let yall know that are calling it a 3-53.

OH-- there's one other thing--the exhaust on a 2 stroke runs COOL, indicating very little energy wasted to the exhaust, as well as the cooling effect of the scavenging air, look at the manifold at the end of the pull--that's REGULAR green paint on it and it doesn't get hot enough to burn it off! This indicates good diesel efficiency--a hot manifold indicated WASTED energy! Long live the 2 stroke!

Why do so many John deere owners say Oliver's are junk ?
