The Role of Redox Potential and Reduction-Oxidation Reactions
Olivier Husson, PhD
“What drives life is a little electric current, kept up by the sunshine” was the elegant summary of Albert Szent-Györgyi, a Nobel Laureate in Physiology. Together with proton exchanges (acid-base reactions), electron exchanges (reduction/oxidation reactions) regulate the functioning of soil, plant, and microorganism systems, and largely impact soil, plant and animal nutrition and health. pH( measuring the availability of protons) and Eh (redox potential, measuring the availability of electrons) can be used as indicators of both soil, plant and animal health.
In this workshop, we will "follow the electrons" in a "one health" approach to show how the cropping practices impact soil Eh-pH, which in cascade impacts microbial activity and plant nutrition, which impacts plant health and fodder quality, and as a consequence, impacts animal nutrition and health.

Engineer in agronomy (ENSA Montpellier, FR) and Doctor in Agronomy (Wageningen University, NL), Olivier Husson works at CIRAD (Centre for International Cooperation in Agronomic Research for Development), in the AIDA Research Unit (Agroecology and Sustainable Intensification of Annual crops). For 30 years, he has been working on co-designing with farmers Conservation Agriculture systems based on Direct Seeding on permanent soil cover in tropical areas (West Africa, Viet Nam, Madagascar), alternating fundamental research, applied research, training and extension works. Since 2010, he has been developing a “bioelectronics” approach, aiming at using pH, Eh (redox potential) and EC (electrical conductivity) as indicators of soil and plant health and using these indicators as management tools for agroecological crop protection.

This is so valuable, thank you, and as a non-scientist, has given me a new perspective on my soil and growing. I keep coming back to this talk, and each time I pick up something new, and make more connections.

Beyond a conceptual understanding of how redox levels affect plant productivity, I don't understand how to convert Husson's mV nomenclature as a representative measure of EC, which is usually expressed as Siemens/cm or such. How can I use an EC meter (which outputs S/cm) to assess my soil's mV (or eH for that matter)? What am I missing? Probably something simple....

33:24 Is there any data available concerning subsoiling as a regenerative measurement - e.g. yeoman plow on pastures where you have some humus in the first centimeters, but probably oxydized 'dirt' below - ?

Any can suggest a video, which explains redox in an understandable way? Have seen lik 3 long vids, but know nothing in the end.

@@EnviroscapeLA-Sustainability thanks, I know. He got me interested in the topic. But the book is very expensive. I thought there might be a soul in the world, that could make some vids, that normal man can understand.

Hi! I hope this isn't too late to reach you... What I'm hearing is that you'd like this in explain it to a 5yr old format? Lol, I absorb and retain information better and faster that way too. I've heard some of Matt Powers stuff on here, yet the most helpful for me has been John Kempf (who knows Olivier Husson very well and Matt Powers). Here's the cliff notes on his redox video, 'Farmers need to release manganese and other metals from soil reserves.': Oxidation Don't Use/Dos: 1)Tilling/Aerating; 2) Salt Fertilizers; 3) Nitrates (NO3) ; 4) Lime Applications (only use if low on Ca); 5) Liquid Manure Applications (because it has high salt content); 6) Dry Out Soil Reducing Use/Dos: 1) Saturate Soils (keep moist); 2) Ammonium (NH4 Reduced form of Nitrogen) ; 3) Grow Nitrogen Fixing Cover Crops (Oats/Buckwheat/Alfalfa/Legumes/Brassicas/Non-GMO Corn); 4) Root Exudates from plants with functional immune systems (Transplant a healthy plant w/roots from rich soil to poor soil). Lastly, this is just something I've picked up from binge watching all these gardening tuts and personal serendipity. It seems like the healthiest soils have fungal decomposition dominance. And that is created with wood dominate compost (slow application) and/or humic substances a.k.a. ancient wood compost a.k.a. humic acid/fulvic acid/humin. The later has presence of heavy metals (arsenic/lead/cadmium & more!) so I prefer using good ol' Back To Eden gardening methods.

"If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough" (A. Einstein) => this the plain truth, science is in the process of learning about Eh-pH in soils, and we are not yet at the level of a clear picture. There are many missing links that O. Husson points out in this video, and this prevents a simple explanation so far. If you survived to the end of this presentation, this means your curiosity is seeded (?) and will developp with the on-going research.

@Carolyn Olivier Husson is a 500 level teacher... That doesn't make him less of a teacher! If you're looking for a 100 level course, I'd watch Back To Eden with Paul. 300/400 level stuff would be John Kempf. I encourage you to be a better student so you can deep dive with Olivier Husson!
