- Composer: Franz Peter Schubert (31 January 1797 -- 19 November 1828)
- Performers: Martin Helmchen (piano), Christian Tetzlaff (violin), Antoine Tamestit (viola), Marie-Elisabeth Hecker (cello), Alois Posch (double bass)
- Year of recording: 2008
Quintet for Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello & Double bass in A major ("Trout"), D. 667 (Op. posth. 114), written in 1819.
00:00 - I. Allegro vivace
13:28 - II. Andante
20:19 - III. Scherzo. Presto
24:29 - IV. Theme and Variations (on the song "Die Forelle"). Andantino
31:58 - V. Finale. Allegro giusto
In the summer of 1819, Schubert traveled with the famous baritone Johann Michael Vogl to the river town of Steyr, where there was an abundance of musical activity. Schubert and Vogl's performance of the some of the composer's songs -- especially "Erlkönig" (Schubert himself taking the part of the father!) and "Die Forelle" ("The Trout") -- attracted the notice of Sylvester Paumgartner, a wealthy mining executive and an accomplished cellist, who then commissioned Schubert to write a quintet based on "The Trout" (and perhaps patterned after a work by Hummel that he had in his collection). The resulting "Trout" quintet -- scored for the unusual combination of piano, violin, viola, violoncello, and double bass -- has become one of Schubert's more enduring chamber works, and it is typical of his early style. A notable feature is the integration of the piano part into the musical texture, on equal terms with those of the string players. In his own writing, Schubert referred to typical piano music as "damnable thumping" and insists in this work, as in his others, that it behave as an orderly and equal member of an ensemble.
- The first movement is disproportionately long at 13 minutes, nearly a third of the length of the entire five-movement work. It is a joyful movement in sonata-allegro form, propelled forward by piano arpeggios and triplet figures in the strings.
- A lyrical andante follows, sweetly expressive in the minor mode, and avoiding any sense of melancholy. It features three themes, one of which allows for an extended piano solo.
- The brief third movement, a presto, begins aggressively but becomes a sort of "dance poem" containing Austrian folk tunes. The rhythmic impetus is unflagging.
- This leads to the work's signature movement, the theme and variations on "Die Forelle" ("The Trout"). Potentially tedious, the theme and variations form is ingenious and satisfying in Schubert's hands--each variation is both individually engaging and integral to the whole. As in the first movement, the piano is thoroughly intermingled with the strings and the resulting sound is nearly symphonic (an exception to this is the third variation, which is a swirling piano cascade with subdued string accompaniment).
- The final movement is simple and light with a swirling, almost "gypsy" sound that can be reminiscent of Dvorák at times. Like the third and fourth movements, the last seems to be broken into smaller units, in the style of a set of dances.
Although he had already written 11 string quartets by the time of the "Trout" Quintet, this composition represents Schubert's first truly significant chamber work. His ability to blend and balance this combination of instruments seems instinctive and the piece is rightly considered one of his most popular and best early works.

This quintet is famous for its variations on the lied "thr trout", but it should not put a shadow on th e other movements. First, the composition of the quartet is special: one violin, one contrabass, and the wriying of Schubert is quite consistent with that. It is vey different from the traditional string quartet.Second, all the movement have themes, harmonic conducting, instrumental equilibriums of their own. In short, the five movements are equally successful, 'the trout' being more popular because the lied and the form of theme and variations.

You mentioned Erlkonig - someone told me it means elf king but I don't know. Two spinoff variations were created that come immediately to mind, just finished listening to the Bolet box of Liszt recordings and what did I hear the first time for solo piano? iI said to myself I know what that is as soon as I heard it. It is a pretty cool musical theme I came to know through the recording of Vadim Repin playing the Ernst set of variations for solo violin, oh what a sound Repin has, that entire CD is unbelievable, one of the very few virtuoso !music recordings I really enjoy. I think there is still a video of Hahn playing it I remember watching a few years ago? I heard stories of Ernst would find out what hotel Paganini was staying in and rent the room next door and proceed to write down all the notes when he was practicing.

+scottbos68 Yes Erlkönig means elf-king. It is of course one of Schubert's most famous melodies, and rightfully so in my opinion. I once saw Repin here in The Netherlands perform, I was a bit underwhelmed but perhaps it had something to do with that I was seated at the very back of the concert hall.

I love Tezlaff! I was just talking about the trout with my father, arguably this may be the greatest piece of chamber music ever written. I first stumbled onto it from the Zukerman documentary titled here to make music there was a little clip of this with Perlman on violin Zukerman on viola Dupre on cello, her husband Daniel Barenboim on piano and zubin meta on bass, I found out later the full video was available on vhs but tragicy never was released on DVD. Was watching a documentary of Horowitz who said if it wasn't for Schubert, Beethoven would have never written a note, I'm not sure I agree with that one. I know Brahms was quite fond of Schubert.

You still ignorant: the principal influence in the music of Schubert was -The First School of Viena-, and not the influence of Beethoven alone. Indeed, Schubert want to study with Beethoven, but this latter was terminal sick, and his friend Schindler (of Beethoven) get for him the Liders of Schubert, and Beethoven in bed read it. . . and it was a happiness for Beethoven before he died! What I'm saying you can check in one of the more authorized books about Beethoven: I mean the Emil Ludwig work.

Note the democratic treatment of the viola which also contributes to diversity and colourful character of the composition - especially in movement II and in the variations ... ;-D

Lovely performance, but these mid-movement commercials are really harshing the mellow

I know, but I didn't put them there. KZfaq put them there once their recognition software has recognised the recorded performance.

Samsung gave a second life to the Trout by having the weird idea to put this music as an cycle alarm on their washing machines and dryers... I guess they could push it a little further. Let's say that after a heavy load cycle, we could hear Wagner's Die Walkure. After a delicate cycle, Satie's Gymnopédie or the rince cycle some Watermusic...lollll

I don't know if this comment had something to do with it but an ad for laundry detergent played during the video.

I think its because the cello and double bass uses the same F clef, they play the same thing, but the bass play an octave lower than the cello.

In those days, the notes of the cello and double bass were written on a single stave.
