Click Here To Subscribe to the Catch Magazine KZfaq Channel ►goo.gl/9Z5dTu - Fly fishing for the mighty steelhead is not always pretty, and this issue's T-Motion theater illustrates the very real deal in the search for Pacific Northwest steelies. The weather during this early spring shoot was as usual; rain, rain and more rain. The rivers rose fast, cleared out, and rose again with each new rain storm. My friend and angler on film, Jack Mitchell, has lived in the Pacific Northwest his entire life and has been guiding and chasing steelhead for most of his years. Despite his expertise, the very real deal of fly fishing for steelhead means that there are no guarantees. It took us many attempts, many hours on the river, and many conversations. Finally we landed a steelhead, but it was what Jack calls "arduous patience" that made it all happen. As in every video shoot, I appreciate the cooperation and joviality of my anglers. Jack is as jovial as they come. What an adventure! Thanks to Jack Mitchell of The Steelhead Ranch theeveninghatch..., and to Eddie Bauer for their generous support. Todd can't imagine the hours of hard work that go into these films but they definitely touch on the feelings and emotions of every hardcore steelhead fishermen, especially OP fishermen! This place and these fish are for sure the reasons many of us grind it out every week at work so we can spend our free time doing what you so vividly show in your films. Having Jack bowing to the fish gods at one point in this video shows how much even he feels when he loses one of these fish, this is a guy who hooks a lot of fish and guides year round and still feels that hollow emptiness when his line goes slack. Thanks so much for making this video, now I have another video fix to watch when I'm trapped at home waiting to get out for a weekend fishing adventure! Trevor...Trevor Covich likes this!!! The legend lives on!! Trevor you and Ben leave a few for us working stiffs will ya, and tell Mike to get back to work!

Within the context of River Fishing for Steelhead you're absolutely Correct. Hopfully the Fish takes the Fly on the Swing and pretty much hooks itself when it turns. If one keeps their hooks sharp and checks them frequently a Steelhead on the Swing pretty much Hooks itself. This is not Trout Fishing with Dries or Nymphs and a 5 weight Rod. However, if it's very Cold Water conditions and the Fish takes at the end of the swing when the fly is Hanging Straight Down Stream you're kind of screwed. A hookup in that situation is a Crapshoot at Best. The author does mention Stinger Hooks for hang down Fish which is probably one's Best Chance. For Saltwater Flyfishing for Bones and Tarpon the Rod is pointed directly at the Fish while stripping. If the Fish takes the last thing one should do is attempt to set the hook by lifting or sweeping the Rod. It's called a Strip Set with you're Line Hand as I'm sure you're aware. Once the Strip Set has been accomplished there's certainly no harm in driving the hook home with the Rod - sweeping to the side. Especially with a Tarpon and provided they stop long enough to give you that opportunity.

I have a little tip for anyone out there in the winter (or early spring if you live in the really cold states as I do) - activate a couple hand warmers and put them in a small heavy duty ziplock bag. When your guides get too frozen to move the line and your leader gets encased in ice, wrap the hand warmers around the ice. Keeps the ice off pretty well, and you have an excuse to warm your hands in the progress. If you use really light tippet keep the hand warmers moving on the line so you don't melt through.

A very nice film of the true life at the river ! I'm agree whit fly must swing above the bottom not on the bottom! And I'm fish micro tubeflies or ed hooks they tend to hook the fish much better! There points are bit outgoing and they digging in different way. I'm use those on float line and from intermediate to sink 3 my goal is present those whit speed . You might try those treble hooks ED that calls from England and I'm use Partridge 4-2# hooks for big salmon in low water in Sweden Norway. I'm enjoying your work nice and good performance sad for lose those fish ! Best regards Bjorn from Sweden 🇸🇪

Before the steelhead runs were wiped out by the dams I use to catch them on one cast into a good looking hole , and that is how steelhead use to bite when there were a lot more of them they were very aggressive !!! In the 60's to mid 70's !!

LOST FISH AT 9:10 >>>> Your rod tip / top 2/3rd's oscillates - flexes too much so much so that it induces a slack - taught - slack - taught series of oscillations thus allowing the fish who is head shaking / rolling to get loose ..... Rods like this need a high angle of attack pointing above about 50+ degrees to keep the osculations to a minimum ....I only know this but loosing a LOT of fish ans then adjusting accordingly......cheers

Well, it's fishing, and when it comes to steelhead, you get few hook ups and even fewer landed fish! It's just part and parcel of the game! It a way its much like Deer hunting, when you have been looking for that old buck you been seeing all summer and come the season, you hunt hard and long and you might get a shot! Been there on both! It cost you both in time and effort and most of the time you are cold and wet to boot! But there is nothing like a fresh steelhead on the end of your line!

Steelhead are not everyone's cup of tea, for there are so many hours and days without a strike, let alone bringing one to the hand. Still, that moment when your rod is nearly wrenched from your hand, that moment when adrenaline is pumped into your system and the heart rate goes through the roof, it is one of the great rushes in fishing. And it is that moment, that makes it all the hours and days worth while.

So this section is what most would consider textbook swinging water, slightly faster than walking pace about waist deep and very little current seams, this means when he casts, all he has to do is aim slight upstream from quartering and make maybe one mend and now that fly can make a big long presentation over as many fish as possible

Where's the challenge if the gears so heavy duty you can horse them Upstream. In Ontario we use 6 lb test with 3-pound leads and still get 15 pound steelhead in. That way at least they have a Fighting Chance

Great flies, great spey casting but don't bother it's horrible. 40 F raining all day long. Go take 2 weeks and bonefish in the warm weather.

Rob you're right; it rains all the time on the OP, especially during the winter steelhead season. I live in Seattle so I have the misfortune of having to go there a lot. I don't recommend the place to anyone, and especially not during the season; bonefish, sounds like a great idea. ;-)
