An Olympic stadium is the site of the opening and closing ceremonies. Many, though not all, of these venues actually contain the words Olympic Stadium as part of their names. Olympic Stadium may also be named a multi-purpose stadium which hosts Olympic sports. In the case of the Summer Olympic Games, athletics competitions and the football final are traditionally held in the Olympic Stadium.

its a stretch to say it was build in 330bc. its on the same location as a really old "stadium" but it wasnt really built as we imagine it today until the middle of the 1800s.

The Maracanã only hosted the opening and closing ceremonies and football at the 2016 Olympics, all the athletics events were at Estadio Nilton Santos, the Botafogo stadium.

@@fahelsa5068 You are confused, the Stadium are not necessarily to be called "OLYMPIC". Several Stadiums such the ones in Atlanta, Tokyo, Melbourne, etc are not called OLYMPIC but hosted the opening and closing ceremonies THAT is what counts! Maracana was that stadium.

London 2012 Olympic were one of the most successful games. Every sporting venue was full of people watching, including paraOlympic which usually get so much less coverage and audience. Beijing was good too. I was so exited about Tokyo but covid ruined for the athletes as well as for everyone else.

I went on holiday to Athens last year, and one of my main goals was to see the Panathenaic Stadium. It's absolutely brilliant, so different to modern stadiums. Definitely one of the highlights of my trip.

The greeks never used a head in the olympics- in fact, football was ( probably) invented in persia. The Olympic sports were athletics, boxing, wrestling and a horserace with chariots. Playing a sport with a head is an Afghan thingy, i think....

These of Munich are the first high-tech buildings in the history of the olympic games. Its world famous futuristic tent roof still looks as if it was built yesterday. Years ahead of its time. Absolutely unique!

By 2024, the Stade de France will have hosted the FIFA World Cup 1998, the UEFA Euro 2016, the UEFA Champions League Finals 2000 and 2006, the IAAF World Championships 2003, the Rugby World Cup 2007 and 2023, and the Olympics 2024. Quite impressive!

When they took the temporary seating away, Sydney was reduced to around 80K Melbourne, with new grandstands removing a lot of the standing room, now seats around 100K.

Detroit tried from 1952 till 1972. They also informally showed interest back in 1920 for hosting the 1928 games. In 1939, they also went to bid but lost for the 1944 games (cancelled due to war).

They ruined Maracana with the makeover. As they did with Luzhniki. Funny thing is, they changed the two tier maracana in a one tier, and one tier Luzhniki in a two tier, and failed miserably in both cases. Such a shame. ..

The ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, in the Peloponnesus peninsula -- NOT in Athens. The Panathenaic Stadium you see today was built the way it is, out of marble, in 1895. There used to be rough seating stands on the hill there -- but the beautiful marble stadium arose in 1895.

3:30 Mexico 68 one of the best Olympics, hopefully Mexico is encouraged to launch its candidacy for 2032 and further increase its legacy. Since it would be after the World Cup of Futbool United 2026 it would have part of the infrastructure already ready. It would be incredible to see an inauguration where they show the greatness of their Aztec, Mayan, Olmec, Purepechas, pre-Hispanic cultures, represented with current technology.

Actually the SoFi stadium which is currently under construction is going to host all or part of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Los Angeles 2028 Games with organizers having proposed a split format that would also incorporate the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Memorial Colisseum in 1932 had about 101.000 and now it has about 71.000... 😔 the plastic chairs added to count how many people are inside the stadium and for convience of corse but less people join the concert. | if Panathenaic stadium was completed( i mean rounded full circle) back then it would still be used to till today somehow and imagine a stadium built 2200 years before first stadiums (1870+330)

Where's the soon to be built SoFi Stadium(Opening Main, Closing First Segment) Both the Colisseum(Opening First Segment, Closing Main) and SoFi would count as the Olympic Stadiums in 2028

A good video! But it's a bit misleading, in my opinion, to say the Panathenaic Stadium dates back to 330BC. Certainly there was a Panathenaic stadium at that site during that period, commissioned by Lykourgas. But what we see is not the original structure. It is the marble rebuild of 144AD by Herodes Atticus, excavated in 1869 for the Zappas Olympics and later refurbished in 1896 for the first modern Olympics. But maybe I'm just splitting hairs :P

Los Angeles built the Coliseum in 1923 (massive for those days if you compare what others had) for the 1932 Olympics. It was host again in 1984, but in 2028 it will co-host with the new $5 billion SoFi Stadium.

Gotta hand it to LA Mem Coliseum. Ninety years old and still hosting sold out USC games to this day. They also had pro football teams, a Superbowl, and even the Dodgers played there for two seasons.

The Rio 2016's Olympic Stadium was not Maracanã, just used to to the Ceremonies and football (it even hasnt a track!) . It was Estadio Olimpico João Havelange, a new athletics stadium built to the PanAm Games 2007, now known as Estadio Nilton Santos, a legendary Brazilian football player.

The 2028 Summer Olympics will have their opening and closing ceremonies in two seperate stadiums at once. The LA Memorial Coliseum, and at SoFi Stadium.

Melbourne 115,000 and Sydney 114,765 were the 2 biggest stadiums. Berlin came in 3rd with 110,000.

What’s really odd is that the USA provides examples both of and contrary to the stereotype of “disposable” stadiums. The Braves have already moved on from Turner Field, yet the LA Coliseum will host a third Olympics over 100 years after it was built. The history of the Panathenaic Stadium is crazy, the site having been abandoned for so long before it was excavated and refurbished during the 19th century.

Should be noted that the 2028 LA Olympics will have two main stadiums, the Memorial Collesium and the cities new SoFi stadium. The Collesium will host the sporting events, whereas SoFi will host the ceremonies.

Maracanã was the main offical stadium of the 2016 olympics used for the opening and closing ceremony. The other one was just a stadium used for the atheltics.

The Helsinki Olympic stadium is just near a amuesment park called Linnanmäki. You can see the olympic stadium from the ferris wheel :)
