During the 2024 Polish Swimming Championships (which qualify swimmers for the 2024 Olympics in Paris this summer), a swimmer in the Women's 200 IM final ended up in the wrong lane halfway through the race and ended up getting disqualified for it.
We discuss how this happened, why it was a DQ, and what questions this raises about the rules for this race.

Completely agree with the dq. There is no excuse ending up in someone else's lane off a turn while racing.

my brother won a district championship butterfly race in australia after losing his brief style speedos and seamlessly pulling them back up during the underwater pull phase without getting disqualified, brilliant

This definitely reminds me of summer league. Actually, my brother (age 8) was swimming a 100 IM, finished the 25 fly, but then kept swimming fly. Everyone started yelling to swim backstroke. He stood up in the middle of the 4-foot pool, processed the information, and then started swimming backstroke. He did get DQ'd. This was several decades ago now...

I would be fun to see something like a 400 at duel meets where you are allowed to enter someone elses lane, or even better have drop lane lines entirely

The solution has always been a simple one. And I have said this many times. The current rules, though sounding simple, force unusual turns. The problem is that the rules want each leg of the IM to be "finished" in accordance with the "finish" rules for each stroke. However, there is only ONE finish, not four, and this occurs at the end of the race! Transition turns should correspond to the MIDRACE turn rules for each stroke. Easy fix, this would mean that for back to breast, the swimmer could flip on their front to approach the turn as they normally do in backstroke, but must leave the wall in accordance with the breaststroke rules. Swimming is still new enough to where we should be able to fix this now, before stupid rules are kept for the sake of tradition. Backstroke rules are most outdated. The "Lochte" rule is also stupid, this was clearly created to appease those who dolphin kick faster on their front, but not to promote the fastest swimming.

I disagree, I love the crossover turn and it's kind of a skill issue messing it up. If you chose to do the crossover turn rather than the normal touch and open turn kind of thing, that's on you. Making it a flip will take too much time off everyone's times.

@@ninerushclips3414 As the rule currently stands, we are sacrificing speed, safety, and consistency for the sake of treating a turn like a finish… and not hurt the feelings of those who spent time perfecting a unique turn found nowhere else in swimming? Additionally, the rule changes of the past have made swimming both faster and slower and make the claim that it “will take too much time off everyone's times” a moot point. The fact that it is obvious that the proposed rule change would result in much faster times, only lends credence to the efficiency of the change. Rules should solve problems, not create them.

@@shanemorgan7162 that's like saying the one kick one pull down for breaststroke should be changed to just underwaters because it's slow and easy to dq... Uniqueness and challenges added to events, only makes the sport more exciting. Thus, I personally think the crossover turn should be here to stay

Aleksandra took "suicide turn" to the next level.
@ninerushclips3414
@ninerushclips3414 Ай бұрын
😂, but fyi, the suicide turn is a backflip version, it's not the same as the side turn conversion that the crossover turn is. Just so you know.

It looks to me as if her knees went to the wall first, but if swim swam says it was a crossover, I trust them

@@northsta no what, after looking at it again, she definitely flipped over like a suicide turn, so I think you are right (probably why she ended up in the wrong lane 🤣, crossover > suicide turn, any day of the week).

I'm not sure about ncaa competition specific rules, but I'm pretty sure that in general entering someone else's lane is not an automatic DQ. You cannot interfere with another swimmer, and you have have to finish (every lap?) in the same lane you started. I'm pretty sure the moment she decided to turn in her opponents lane, she guaranteed her DQ. That breaks both of the previous rules. If she had simply dipped back under the lane, she might have saved herself. There is still a solid chance they would have DQ'ed her for interfering with another swimmer.

The waves would interefere with the other swimmer; hence the antiwave lane ropes.

in track and field when you run a 100m race you can run into another lane and finish the race in the lane that you ran into and you won't be disqualified as long as you don't impede on the person in the lane that you ran into.

NEW EVENT: DRAFT. Swimmers are allowed to cross over into other lanes as long as they don't touch each other (could get complicated with flip turns this rule is up for debate) and they finish in their own lane. Strategies: on the dive move over to other lanes to draft of people.

I completely understand that mistakes happen. However I make a plea to all swimmers (13&O) that if you happen to somehow end up in another lane in the middle of the race and that person is still swimming, to immediately get out of the lane and exit the race. Your race is done at that point. Don’t ruin someone else’s dreams.

You can really tell Coleman is not and never was a swimmer at the end of this video. Swimswam should only hire swimmers or swammers…
