7:38 One thing that's really easy to miss is Ushiwaka signaling an apology to Tsukki. It shows that he legitimately didn't mean to hurt Tsukki and wasn't just some jerk saying "see? that's what you get!" Just another one of the little details that add so much to a character.

"The block where you laugh last" is such a Kuroo thing to say, because you know that guy's gonna be all "heehee hoohoo" when he sees spikers get frustrated.

Ah yes. Nishinoya's legendary double save. ✨

Noya's double save is probably the highlight that most viewers remember about this episode, but my favourite is Tsukki's face off with Ushijima. He's on equal footing with and directly challenging one of the top 3 aces of the country, when it would have been unthinkable for S1 Tsukki or S2 Tsukki who never had the big talk with Bokuto / Yamaguchi. His development was foreshadowed as early as S1 when Tsukki got serious in the 3 on 3 match with Hinata and Kageyama.

26:12 as iconic as Noyas double save is, the way Oikawa yells out "HUUUUH?!?!?!" has me in tears everytime😂😂😂

28:43 "laugh" is usually "笑う" in Japanese. But this Kuro's line, Furudate sensei used "咲う", more literary expression for "laugh" and this word means "blossom" as well. So it shows Tsukishima's hard work is paid off and blossoming at this point.

One thing I’ve always liked about Oikawa is that despite Hinata being short and inexperienced, he doesn’t look down on him. Even the comment about Hinata trying to think about his next move being “disgusting”, was more of an “I’m impressed” comment. In the moment he was able to focus that much and not let the previous miss get him down and Oikawa recognizes that

5:15 I loved that in the manga there's a relatively more "epic" panel with Hinata and Tsukishima, highlighting just how similar they are becoming on the court as Hinata's competitive spirit rubs off on Tsukishima. I also liked Ushijima's apologizing gesture to Tsukishima, such a nice little touch, very in character for him. Watching people lose it over this cliffhanger never gets old :"D "Haikyuu is the greatest thing of all time" amen!!!

I love how much more excited volleyball players get for Nishinoya's double save than other anime reactors do, because they understand what an amazing feat it was. Probably the single greatest display of personal athleticism and skill in the series.

I only noticed it now, after how many times I've rewatched the show, but ushijima actually gestures to tsuki when he came back to the court, as if saying "sorry about that". That's honestly cool.

I knew that cliffhanger was going to kill Sarah 😂😅 Yeah I agree Tsukki is the MVP. This line up is the perfect one for Karasuno. Can’t wait for the last episode! So excited. ❤

This is going to be a long one (apologies beforehand). I actually love Wahijo as a character. He is someone who was small and really good especially in receiving, maybe could have been a libero. But sadly, I don't think the libero position existed at the time. During his time, it really was all about height and power. His coaches and teammates reinforced that belief and told him that he needed to be taller. Years later, he becomes a coach and doubles down on this belief and achieves great success. We all look at him and say that he couldn't make it because he wasn't good enough or talented enough (which I don't think is true). Washijo was way more skilled at the same age than Hinata is currently given that Hinata didn't have a proper team until high school. Realistically, if Hinata had gone to school anywhere else would he be a starting player? He can't serve or receive, is not a great blocker and requires a setter of Kageyama's caliber to utilize him offensively. Washijo never had the support system that Hinata did. I think the line that rings true for me in this regard and is one of the best is the show is that Hinata says at the start of each season. 'A tall, tall wall looms in front of me. What’s the view on the other side? What does it look like? The view from the top…it’s a view I could never see on my own. But…if I’m not doing it alone…I just might be able to see it.' The belief of height and power above all else instilled in him my his own teammates and coaches and the overwhelming success he has had with this ideology (given that Shiratorizawa is a perennial powerhouse) has made him over the years a bitter and jaded man living vicariously through his team's success. In that aspect, Karasuno and Hinata are a perfect foil to Washijo's ideology. And that's what makes this match so great, beyond the volleyball. Edit: I think it is important to note that I think the ideology that was challenged was height and power above anything else. Not Shiratorizawa's style of perfecting of individual skills. Because as Haikyuu repeatedly shows us each team has their own style that should be acknowledged/respected and each of them is perfect for their own team (bringing out the best of each team). The only difference is that Karasuno is still evolving given that so many of their starters are first-years and they have a new head coach. The other schools have maybe one or two starting first years and none of them have the same impact as Karasuno's. For example, Kageyama and Tsukkishima go head to head with Oikawa and Ushiwaka (the two best players in the prefecture). And of course, Hinata who just picks a fight with anyone. You just don't see that with any of the other teams. So, though the others do add to their repertoire the effect is much more pronounced for Karasuno and their whole style appears completely new because they are still adapting trying to perfect it.

I have a little more sympathy for Washijo - he was probably told for years growing up that volleyball is only for tall people. Could he have pushed through that anyway? Sure, but when you're a kid and everyone you look up to and respect (either coaches or senior players) tells you one truth that seems like common sense, it's hard to break through that. I wonder if Hinata had started in a more traditional structure instead of basically coming to a desperate Karasuno that came with a particularly open- minded team and a freaking gifted setter if Hinata wouldn't have also had this drive beaten out of him by a relentless "this is obviously the truth". Hinata has a combination of drive + supportive environment and also benefits from like 40 years of volleyball evolution. Sure the coach could handle this a bit more maturely, but this is his inner monologue - he's not actually saying this to anyone. I see this as more of him trying to work through his whole world view coming crashing down on him and the regrets that would inevitably come with it. Someone is showing him a path that he didn't know existed when he's no longer able to take that path for something that he really loves.

no other reactor pointed that out. the reason noya was able to dig is not JUST because he is awesome. But because his legs are less tired than everybody else's coz he doesn't jump as much. just wow!!!

I really appreciate your insight and breakdown of going for the jump serves on match point. I understood the general concept of there being value in simply taking the chance, but hearing your more in depth logic on why it applies practically when two teams are strong and has a high chance to score when 'in system' wow that's a new way to look at it for me very interesting

Tsukishima, Nishinoya and Daichi are the core defense for Karasuno with their touches and receives to make sure the ball stays in play, they're all awesome. Great reaction as always.

It's fascinating that Sarah, as a pro Volleyballer, thinks of Tsukki's involvement as a cliffhanger because she knows about the bench-whistle rule, but the rest of us, the moment we saw Tsukki, KNEW he'd play, starting first serve next ep, because we'd never been told about any such rule.

Here is a little detail that I'd like to add. Notice Oikawa calls "that miracle-like (or God-like)" what Karasuno players call "The freak-quick". This is because, of course why would Oikawa call it the same? He doesn't share time with our players. But they do have a name for it nonetheless. It's a small thing but it all adds up to making the characters and the world of this anime feel real, like "of course Oikawa and Iwaizumi must talk about "the freak-quick" off camera!"

Such a great episode, and yes, a killer cliffhanger I don't know if someone has mentioned it yet, but just in case....going into season 4, there's a noticeable art style change for the characters. I wanted to give a heads up because I didn't know about it the first time I watched haikyuu, and jumping from season 3 to season 4 shocked me quite a bit lol

Watching people react to that cliffhanger always kills me 😂 Can’t wait for next week! I saw that someone warned you of the art changes for season 4. Just wanted to add that it was a decision made by the producers to make the art style match what’s in the manga. Season 1-3, while beautiful, is very different from the manga, which is more simple in its art style. Also, season 4 was created during peak Covid lockdown, so there are moments where the quality of the animation really takes a dip. But I’ll also say that some of my favourite-ever shots from Haikyuu come from s4 (and I’m an animator myself, so I’m picky 😅). The quality is there for the big/important moments that need it most. Just a heads up! It’s still so so enjoyable, as long as you sort of understand the circumstances for the changes.

I’m really looking forward to your episode 10 reaction because it has some of the best symbolism/imagery in the series imo it’s so intense I remember when I first watched I binged the whole season in one night (it was a school night too but it was worth it) and I was literally on the edge of my seat the whole time it felt like my heart was going to beat out of my chest and I was trying so hard not to yell because my whole family was asleep😅 season 3 is probably my favorite season I’ve rewatched it probably at least 5 times over the past couple years and it never gets old and I love watching other peoples reactions to it

Since the character of the coach of Shiratorizawa appeared, I just never hate him, or should say I CAN’T. It’s like… who he has become right now was all because of countlessly being rejected and never had the opportunity. 😢 Which means the act of acknowledging Hinata is another way of denying his own self, his whole volleyball life, and that’s a really painful thing.🥺 I can understand why he just doesn’t want to see Hinata shine, or how he always try to let Hinata know that being short is really fatal and is going to be a difficulty that couldn’t be ignored in volleyball. It stabs.💔

I have NEVER noticed that scene at 7:40 where Tsukki checks in and Ushijima welcomes him back, that's a really cool detail and sign of acknowledgement! I went back and watched your Season 1 Episode 1 reaction, and you asked a question about our favorite episode of Haikyuu, and I responded that most of the best episodes come in the later parts of the later seasons so I wouldn't spoil this episode in particular, but Tsukki's big moment and this episode were the ones I would have said, Noya's save and speech were amazing! Also, I read comments from me responding to "Does Tsukishima's attitude ever get better?" when you were not his biggest fan, and I'm glad we are at the point you get to see for yourself!

Karasuno is just like Nekoma's coach said, during the training camp: they are omnivores, they can eat anything and survive in any enviroment. They "ate" the style of all the powerhouse schools from tokyo, whatever they see fit they find a way to add to their play.

23:15 gen one of my top 10 favorite scenes in haikyuu, the concentration you can see on his face and the way he's scanning and processing what to do is very satisfying to look at

Noya's double save proves why I think the libero is the coolest position. An awesome spike is cool but what gets the crowd the most hyped up? What gives the most hope and strength to the team? The absolute biggest morale boost? The libero saving a near impossible ball after everyone thought all hope is lost. It's the coolest thing ever, seriously.

There are some videos/ articles you can check online. Haikyuu's writer directly used the things we see IRL (in japan) into to his art.

I just wanna point out, since I see nobody else is doing it, that at min 10:16 Tsuki's hurt hand it's literally shaking, either from the adrenaline or the pain it shocks me every time they show it cause it lasts 2 seconds in the screen but it shows how deeply committed he is to winning that match no matter what and one just have to love him for it

It’s only a tiny detail, but I love the little animation on Tendo figuring out Tsukki was faking the slide hit, just seeing the calculations going on in his eyes before going after Tanaka

I’m so incredibly excited for the cryptkeeper’s character arc by the end of the manga 😊

I think the big difference between Hinata and Washijo (Shiratorizawa's coach) is that when Hinata started training and developing physically he didn't have any coach or experienced player to learn from. But he also didn't have someone that would say "You are too short, there's no point in you playing offence in volleyball, you can't score". There was noone do discourage him. So he developed physically, increased his speed and agility, but he was bad at specific skills needed to play volleyball, which he is learning at Karasuno. On the other hand, Washijo had coach, he learned how to recieve, serve, etc., but also his coach didn't motivate him to train harder and deserve the main spot in their team. Instead, he would always say that Washijo had no shot because of his height. And at some point Washijo agreed, forgot about his dreams as a player and became a coach and very good one at that. Now he wants to stop Hinata to prove that his decision was right. I really like their comparison and this helps me kind of understand Washijo's point, even though I want Hinata and his dedication to the sport win at the end. Also, yes, Noya is and will always be the GOAT of Karasuno's defence line. If I'm not mistaken the reason why at the begining everyone thought Karasuno was an interesting team is great libero Noya, genius setter Kageyama and strong ace Asahi. Noone knew about other players before this tournament. And I love how this anime shows the MVP of this match Tsukki, but never forgets other players and their impact, like subbed Narita or the trio of Asahi, Tanaka and Sawamura, who played all 5 set for the first time in their life without getting subbed. This anime is just great!

Agreed with sarah, Kageyama's dump at match pt was huge. That's why i love him
