The whole hitting the back of the head & showing his team mates reaction was probably to illustrate that with good team mates, he no longer had anything to fear. Nothing's more terrifying than failing and hitting your SENIORS head in Japan. It gave him the confidence needed to succeed, sorta like how the vast majority of a person's fears that hold us back are in our minds.

@@SarahPavanVolleyball I think it’s a bit jarring since it seems they didn’t include Tsuba’s backstory from the manga. Regarding Kageyama's stomach: it's just him being super in tune with how he's feeling and aware of his body. remember he mentioned to Koganegawa from Date Tech how even 1mm of tape on his fingers would affect his setting, so Kageyama is very aware of the state of his body

exact, in fact it's related to the "self management" thing his grandpa taught him. So with regard to Atsumu, I'm not going to try to convince you that you'll like him, but I just want you to keep this in mind. Unlike Oikawa who tends to be passive-aggressive and uses a cheerful friendly facade to hide his insecurities, Atsumu hides nothing and wears his emotions on his sleeve. Anything he says, whether it's positive or negative, you can be certain that it's genuine. You don't need to apologize for getting so passionate. That's one of the reasons we love your reactions!

I have been trying to find out why Skyball is not currently done. Google says it has no advantage in modern volleyball because the long dwell time prepares the libero to receive reliably and the other members to be fully prepared to attack. This is exactly what Karasuno did and I was impressed with the accuracy of the animation I also really like the line that the opposing coach says. "It's not your teammates who won't forgive you, when you mess up. It's yourself." This is common to all team play

Sooooo true!! Whenever I am coaching kids and they get upset with themselves for missing a serve or for hitting out, I ask them, "What do you think about your teammate when they make that mistake?" 16:32 I love watching Japanese high school (and middle school) volleyball videos. I don't know if it's the influence of Haikyuu but in a lot of the ones I've watched, they do the crossing patterns/combination plays with their middles that we see Hinata do. It's so cool how disorientating they are. Whenever I watch US high school or college volleyball, it's usually just raw power and trying to overpower the other team, so I like watching the Japanese players do more complex plays.

Actually it's a jelly not gelatine (or is gelatine the same thing? idk lol) I think Kageyama's expression made much more sense in Japanese than in English translation, his stomach condition is good, not either full or empty, just good. I got that feeling too when I was in marching band competition, whenever I perform well my stomach is always like absorbing necessary energy from food just like Kageyama said 😂 and sometimes when I feel my stomach is somehow heavy even though I don't eat much, it kinda affect my performance I don't know if it's a thing in western countries but in Japan, stomach condition is quite normal expression to describe our mental and physical state. EDIT: Also thank you always for volleyball tidbits! It's great to know more about underhand serve since I'm doing haikyu smartphone game now, I didn't use underhand serve much in the game to get an ace (when they have a condition to clear the game other than getting score) since I thought jump float was better for that, but now I'm starting to use an underhand serve and I feel like the probability of getting an ace is bigger now 🤣 even though it's just a mobile game i feel like its pretty fun to use an actual volleyball knowledge haha
@zeldaindisguise
@zeldaindisguise Жыл бұрын
So, "gelatin" is actually correct here. The word "jelly" in Japan is used for what many English-speaking countries would call "a gelatin," and translating it as "gelatin" was both the proper translation and a smart decision on the translator's part. "Jelly" in English is something like a jam, but leaving out the fruit solids and keeping only the fruit juice to make a translucent... well, jelly. Eating "jelly" would be a very strange expression because it could bring to mind a person eating spoonfuls of straight jam! For someone who is familiar with Japanese snacks and names, "jelly" would bring to mind the konyaku/gelatin sweet, but for people going into anime without that background knowledge, translating it to "gelatin" makes more sense. To put it another way, "peanut butter and jelly" does not equal "peanut butter and gelatin." A native English-speaker may read "jelly" to mean "jam," but there's no mistaking "gelatin." Using "gelatin" avoids misinterpretation. tldr; "Jelly" can also be a colloquialism for "gelatin" in English, but there's room for misinterpretation, so it's safer to translate it as Kageyama eating "gelatin."
@tadanobukatsu99

@@zeldaindisguiseohh I see, thanks for the explanation! since the word "gelatin" in Japan is commonly used as a reference for an ingredient in foods, so I was confused 😂 we do have a lot of English words used in different purpose from English native speakers, I learned a lot today!
@theclockworkheart
@theclockworkheart Жыл бұрын
@@zeldaindisguise well, in the US at least (and maybe canada, and perhaps why it sounds weird to sarah too), no one would say gelatin except to refer to the ingredient you use to thicken things in cooking and baking. instead we say jell-o/jello to refer to the food you eat (a brand name that's become the term for the food). for us, jelly is jam, gelatin is the ingredient, and jello is a catch-all for a gelatinous type of food. so that definitely still sounds weird in some english speaking countries at least!

7:30 I suspect Kageyama's various stomach related thoughts are meant to contrast how Hinata "bathroom break" Shoyo and other nervous characters are portrayed as nauseous before the match He had a similar thought in season 2 about the barbecue from the training camp right before he and Hinata finally got the new version of the quick to work In short, I think "My stomach is feeling good" is Kageyama for "I'm in the zone right now"

Kageyama thinking about his stomach is just him being aware that he's in peak condition in the moment. He's noticing that he has digested the jelly (which is probably a nutritional jelly drink), so he is comfortable and full of energy. He's calmly assessing his condition, which is when he plays his best.

With Kageyama’s stomach, I can actually relate to that. When I was swimming year round in high school, whenever I had a swim meet I had this struggle. As a swimmer I ate a ton of food, so I got hungry pretty often. It was tough trying to balance out your food so that when you have a race, you aren’t full with food just sitting in your stomach while you swim, but you also don’t want to be hungry. It’s especially difficult when the big swim meets take 5+ hours and your events are spread out, to try and have your stomach in perfect condition for every race is difficult

@@yamikamui yeah i think that's why i like it haha. This team specifically in the beginning of the game mentioned luck and how Karasuno might have been lucky to beat Shiratorizawa. But I love the "chance favors the prepared mind" because it's saying that even good luck will come to the people who put in more work. Like for Hinata, we see that your body will pull off luckier plays if you practice more since your body is attuned to the motions of the sport. it's giving more credence to 'luck' as a concept.
@LetTheBodyFall
@LetTheBodyFall Жыл бұрын
Re the line "opportunities come to those who have prepared" also relates a lot more to the fact that even though the current third years (Sugawara, Daichi, and Asahi) came to Karasuno where the team was at its lowest, they still took practice seriously, even with the team as it was. Going back to the previous flashback, they did their own research, they did a lot of independent practice- they prepared. So when the current first years joined the team + Takeda's efforts in getting Ukai as a coach, they knew that this was their chance and they took it and it all paid off. In their last year of high school, the flightless crows went to Nationals.

I've seen this mentioned elsewhere, but what a lot of people love about that last point other than what you've talked about is how the third years get to showcase their skills in that point. "Opportunity presents itself to those who have prepared" really does embody the third years who waited and prepared for this nationals tournament more so than the others (though of course them too!) and we get to see how all three of them touched the ball in the last set with Asahi's point, Daichi's dig, and of course, Suga's research+serve+set (did you see the hand signal?! :D)+dig. I know Haikyuu plays aren't always realistic, but I think creative license in storytelling with the game in these instances really do make the story so much richer!

7:44 I dont have have an explanation, but I really related to that feeling when I first saw it. Its like that feeling where youre not hungry, but your not full, and oddly enough that feeling of equilibirum in your stomach feels like its contributing to how excellent you play. Granted, I feel this when I play video games, not physical sports 😅

what i have come to with the whole gelatin thing is that he is at 100% and there is now nothing to worry about except for the plays. i think it was a mental check of "is this or that bothering me?" and just realizing that he's in the zone. could be wrong but that is how i have seen it as and it makes a bit more sense in that context.

So about that gelatin comment from Kageyama, in Japan, energy drinks and things like Gatorade/Powerade equivalents aren't really that popular, at least not as much as energy jelly. They come in these little packets, and they are full of nutrients, amino acids, and vitamins. You see athletes using them a lot there.

My assumption about the gelatin and his stomach is that even he feels the nerves on some level. Not as much as Hinata throwing up like in the begining of the series but there is that 1% of nerves

Regarding the gelatin comment: No Kagyama specific insights but... Sometimes you're doing an activity and you've just eaten and you can feel the food heavy in your stomach still. Sometimes you haven't eaten recently enough and you're hungry, distracted, and feel in want of blood sugar. Kagyama is just realizing that he has all the energy he needs but doesn't feel overly full, which is an ideal state to be in.

I am late, but i wanted to add to what the scene of the failed underhand. I reaaaally enjoyed that scene, i laugh every time I watch it, the way they repeated the sound hitting his team mate head, I just laughed so much. And I love the randomness of it, life is fulfilled of random moments, thoughts, embarrassing little interactions, i love it all. Adding randomness is also the creators having fun while writing, their universe taking form, the many characters living a daily bumpy life, and getting over the fear, the embarrassment. I love cringy moments

Himekawa's first serve and his whole team shaking it off as though it was nothing and ESPECIALLY the 'our serves in the second half weren't that good' comment was to illustrate that, sure, he lost the set point, but he lost 1 out of 25 points, and the rest of the team lost the other 24. If someone was responsible for losing that set, it was the starting team, and definitely not him. Putting him in at set point seems cruel at first, but I think is the best experience for Himekawa to understand that whatever point he loses due to a failed pinch serve whenever it is into the match, it is one point, he is NOT PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE ever for losing games, even if that point happened to seem like the most important point. Every point is equal, and the match belongs to the team. 'Be ambitious' like Ukai said earlier, when you serve. A small side story, but poetic and beautiful like all of Haikyuu.

I know skyball isn't exactly a slaughtering kind of serve for indoor playing, but it's so classy when it's done with all that care to score. I recommend watching a few videos from Bernard Rajzman, former brazilian player, doing it. He's a master of this technique and, considering how much Furudate researched about brazilian volleyball, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a kind of homage. (edit: commented while watching the video, before your comments at 25:29 - it feels like a technique tailor-made for beach volleyball, especially if the sun is at it's brightest)

Tanaka and Mad Dog look the same because they’re both representative of the “delinquent teenager” archetype that is common in these types of series. The bleached hair and grumpy disposition are visual and emotional cues. It’s also why the two of them clashed a bunch during the last Seijoh match.
