Yessssss!!!! You know how obsessed I am with Nekoma (*cough cough* Kuroo), so this episode made me sooooo happy!! I love the Kenma backstory, even though my make-believe hair dying friendship party didn't happen 😂

Just think of it like this, when Kenma decided he wanted to dye his hair the first person he went to was Tora and after a little bit of ribbing, Yamamoto happily showed him how to do it and when Kenma’s roots started to show he offered again but it always takes Kenma months to build up the social battery to be around Tora on his own for a couple hours straight. 😂

In the flashback memory, when you asked why Kuro looked to angry, they showed the score to a game a few seconds earlier, Kuro's and Kenma's team lost. Kenma willingly gave up his game time to go "level up" volleyball with Kuro to cheer his friend up 🥺

The reason Kenma dyed his hair was because he scared the crap out of Yamamoto in the locker room, reminding him of Sadako (from the Ring horror movie). Yamamoto said he'd stand out with hair like that, and Kenma hated the idea, so he went blond :"D Yamamoto actually meant that his hair was too long, but Kenma didn't want to cut it cause having a wide field of vision makes him anxious

The story onto why Kenma dyed his hair is pretty silly. Since he is so silent, he would go to the clubs room, and play games in the dark till someone would show up and get scared the living hell out of. Everyone thought there was a ghost on the Volleybal club room. He thought dying his hair like Tora would make him more visible, but then the people started saying that there is a pudding head ghost in the Volleyball room 😂😂

About Kuroo and Yaku's bickering, remember back in the OVA, they show how opposite they are in almost everything? Kuroo said that he likes fish because docosahexaenoic acid is good for you (I'm paraphrasing) and he's just generally great at science subjects so Yaku would sometimes use big words to dig at him. And tell us please, about the headband, you didn't like Tsubakihara's little bow tied behind their head, and you don't like Sarukawa's long trail, how would you wear it, if you had to wear one in a match? 😂

11:43 They're talking about how Yaku loves meat and Kuroo loves fish. In previous chapters, they used to fight about what to eat together since they don't like the same things. Kuroo said previously "You lack of docosahexaenoic in your body" meaning that if Yaku doesn't eat fish, he lacks of its nutrients. docosahexaenoic = Omega3 on fish astaxathin = antioxidant, a chemical that turns salmon red

I absolutely adored this episode when I first saw it, and I usually felt pretty meh about the non-Kurasuno episodes. Something about how they showed us the development of Kenma's and Yamamoto's friendship was just so genuine. It wasn't fast or forced, like Kageyama and Hinata. It was just two teammates who couldn't stand each other that ended up forcing the other person to recognise their skill. A relationship built on mutual respect and trust, even if they don't exactly like each other.

The science words were Yaku trying to insult Kuroo for his love of fish (which is one of the many, many things he completely disagrees with with Kuro lol) but he got the molecule wrong and Kuro corrects him that it's DHA (the doco-something something acid, don't ask me, I don't have the whole thing memorized) that's found in fish, not anasthaxin. Meanwhile Kai comments that anasthaxin suits them coz it's red and that's nekoma's color 😂

My interpretation of Sarukawa's strategy isn't that they are avoiding scoring exactly. It's that Nekoma's defense is really strong, so the rallies naturally last a long time. Rather than change up their offense in ways that might result in faster kills, they keep making the safe and predictable plays knowing that the long rallies favour their team since Kenma will get tired. Also Sakusa plays for Itatchiyama, the #1 seed that won the Summer Interhigh, and also defeated Fukurodani to take top spot in Tokyo in the qualifiers. It was mentioned that they are on the opposite side of the tournament brackets, so Karasuno can't play them until the final.

16:05 I think instead of “not trying to score” it’s more that they’re making sure the ball gets back over with an awkward placement rather than a powerful spike. If they win the point, all the better, but they know they’re unlikely to win by smashing spikes down hard but in predictable places

@Deamy Haha dw, you got it right! There's a lot of hidden puns and word play in Haikyuu, so it can't be helped if non-Japanese speaking ppl don't notice them. Btw, if you want to check Japanese words, try jisho.org. I'm a professional translator and that's my go-to dictionary. You can type the word in romaji (roman alphabet) so it's very easy to use

in case no one has said it yet: the "monkeys" from the title comes from the fact that the "saru" in Sarukawa Tech High can be translated as "monkey" (but only phonetically).

A small trivia in 10:30 , Kuro's team were defeated by Nezumi Grade School. Nezumi means mouse in japanese, so... cats defeated by mouses? Tom defeated by Jerry? Yeah, no wonder our little Kuroo was upset!

I love that scene where Fukunaga comes running at Kenma & Tora with a bucket (31:14~). It's SO funny & cute!😆🎵 Last time hachimakis (headbands) came on screen, she was against the ends tied in a bow & said that they should be fee-flowing "samurai style" (in her words) & I commented that most times that's how actual athletes wear them at Haru-Kou etc. But now, she's saying those loose ends are not good... I somehow feel "bad" for the characters with hachimakis now...😅 There were only a few iffy subs this ep, so just gonna leave a little "fun fact" type of comment about them this time: 5:58 A "zashiki warashi（座敷童）" is a kind of youkai (mythical creature/monster?). They take up residence in people's houses & have an appearance of a child wearing a kimono, with a traditional childhood haircut (thus zashiki = tatami room & warashi = child). They're mostly thought not to be malevolent, & that they bring good fortune/prosperity to the house it inhabits. 18:33「Aパス…E（いい）パス」→"an A-pass... Better than an F-pass". The Japanese version is a kind of pun, with the letter E sounding like 「いい = good」. I guess the translaters made it into an equivalent pun joke by taking up the grading system in the States (& elsewhere?) & saying "A is better than F".

I was kinda like Kenma in school when it came to team sports, but even from grade 1 I would always just find a way to run from my sports classes (I would only do solo sports) and I was successful at hiding from my coach 80% of the time without getting caught :) but now that my body isn't as fresh as it used and I'm less introverted, I kind of wish I didn't run from team sports because the few times that I actually tried I was pretty good and I enjoyed being with the team, I just didn't like to run, feel the burn or be in the spotlight 🥹 good for people like Kenma that fought the hardships even though it was hard 🙂❤

I was wondering if the teams' image of cats and monkeys has some relation to ”犬猿の仲 (relationship between dog and monkey = bad relationship)” in Japanese, but I learned from the Internet that in English the same word is "dog and cat". It’s because Kuroo's favorite food is saury, and in Japan, there are well-known supplements that sell the nutritional benefits of saury acid I guess. The chat about the acid among Kuro and Yaku. Anyway, I am happy to watch the reaction whose is really into volleyball, and know how it feels to be into the sport in the teenage, because Haikyuu saved my high school club life. ok, so I'm a bit late to the party but: Kuroo says when his teammate mentions that the first acid is red and that's Nekoma's color so it's fine that "that is not the point", and I think the reson of that is that the second acid, the one that Kuroo likes, is used to regulate the brain, and who is the brain? But either way this is my personal theory

By scarifying scoring points does not necessarily mean they are trying to loose points on purpose but make plays which puts more stress on the setter than on scoring points and during the process they can gain points which is risky which the coach makes a bet on this strategy. So basically it does give them a slower tempo in the beginning but if played into their hand they could turn it around in their favor. But truth be told I'm not sure how effective it might be in a real game but this strategy is employed in high level chess and what i believe is this match is more of a mental chess as much as it was a physical match, is what the show is trying to portray is what I believe.

I checked the comments but no one pointed it out. Well, it's not a big deal. 25:58 Fukunaga makes a pun that doesn't translate well. Yarisugi, Dostoyevski. ( I guess it's because yevski sounds like sugi in Japanese? I'm not sure.) Sugi adds the meaning of ''too much'' in Japanese, so he's saying ''you are going too far.''

I’m 8 months late, but this is about as far from a “mistranslation” as you can get. A mistranslation is when the translator doesn’t understand the meaning, or perhaps chooses the incorrect word on accident. This was an *intentional change* in the line to make a joke that modern young English speakers would connect to. Was it a good call? Probably not, the Batman reference comes off a bit meme-y and takes you out of it. But I would hazard a guess that calling Kenma “Dostoyevsky” would go over most heads in the target audience. 🤷🏻‍♂️

In case if you dont know every japanese national competition the Home region will have extra spot and in Tokyo case who already have extra spot due to having 4x total highschool on their region made there is 3 spot which was 1. Itachiyama (Sakusa team) 2. Fukurodani (Bokuto team) and 3. Nekoma

Too much pauses on this weeks ep hahaha and at the wrong timing too.. the reason why the young Kuro was upset was because they lost their match that's why Kenma asks if he wants to level up kinda like cheering him up..

Yeah I really hated that we stopped following Karasuno and Inarizaki just to get a Kenma/nekoma backstory. I literally couldn’t care less about either of the latter.
