Helen Maroulis was 7 when she took up wrestling; her older brother needed a drill partner and there weren’t enough boys to go around. “Growing up wrestling guys, you definitely had to earn respect,” says Maroulis. “Coaches didn’t want to coach, or they would baby you.” Watch to see how this wrestler trains to go for the gold in Rio.

Two things stand out: 1) She surrenders the dream of winning before each match...I take that as to mean, she gives herself permission to loose as long as she did her very best. 2)She doesn't recommend this to anyone. No kidding. A serious wrestler's lifestyle is not an easy one. It's not just a sport, you have to live like a wrestler all the time. Congrats to her. Awesome video.

As a person who loves to study nutrition, I don't understand why a WRESTLER who needs a LOT of strength and energy would be put on a diet SO constraining...that's not enough to support her body sufficiently. Makes me actually consider the raw food diet because it IS low in calories but at least you don't have to starve.
@Voyager2525
@Voyager2525 8 жыл бұрын
I think it's because she was cutting weight at that moment. You need to get to a very low body fat percentage. When she is not cutting she probably eats differently.

If you think this was restricting you wouldn't want to know what her diet is like the last few days before weigh inns! Like no more than 500 calories per day.

Actually Helen is the best woman wrestler in the world right now and she defines the ability to overcome discrimination... I wrestled with her many times and I to was a girl on a guy team. She was my role model when I was a little girl because she made me feel like I can do anything a man could do but even better and it's true. So please before you give an opinion like that... Do some research... She's so much more than just a pretty face, she's a inspiring person and she will win gold in rio to prove that!

WELL-SAID !!! ... Helen and the rest of the U.S.A. women's wrestling team is now so talented, accomplished and experienced (damn attractive, too, I might add) that at least one of them will win a gold medal (or at least come damn close) ... I just hope the coaches don't "over-exert" any of them before their events next week ... They've all probably practiced full-blast as it is ...
@EmaRooksy
@EmaRooksy 8 жыл бұрын
Not disputing the athlete's talent, I'm saying that Vogue Specifically highlights attractive people be they athletes, musicians etc. She would not have received the Vogue profile had she not been beautiful as well as talented. I am criticizing the blinders that Vogue wears. Stick to fashion, models and celebrities, don't try and be socially conscious when all you do is showcase beauty.
@Paanther100

My above comments (WELL-SAID !!! ... Helen and the rest ...) I hope everyone understands were meant in reply to Katie Chaney ... however, in reply to KarimaMohd's above counter-reply (Not disputing the athlete's talent, ...), I'd say what she says (if true) has valid points and clarified her original post much for the better. I have to defer to her judgment about the factors Vogue uses in showcasing or profiling the women they do because although many people--myself included--are aware of Vogue, I myself don't subscribe to it or read it very often to offer an imformed judgment in that regard one way or the other.
