Nina Derwael made history for Belgium, winning the uneven bars in the first of three days of apparatus finals competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Her gold is the first of any colour for a Belgian woman in the sport at the Olympic Games.
Second up in the final, Derwael delivered a 15.200, well clear of ROC's Anastasia Iliankova's 14.833. Olympic all-around champion Suni Lee of the United States was the bronze medallist with a 14.500.
Derwael came into Tokyo as the two-time defending world champion on the apparatus. Many expected a battle between Derwael and Lee, who qualified 1-2 into the final. But Lee, who competed first in the final, was off kilter on her opening release move and broke a connection. That cost her valuable tenths on her difficulty score. Derwael held her nerve, despite topping out a handstand toward the end of the routine.

How would you know the gold medalist didn't do the same and cheer the other athletes. Nina is the champion with a breathtaking routine and she's a great athlete. Let's cheer for Suni and all the athletes but let's not try to divert the title away from the athlete who definitely earned that medal. It's disrespectful to her and her team.

This EF was so underwhelming. Nobody hit with a great execution, i mean no one just did their actual best. When the reigning Olympic champion is as majestic and clean as Mustafina, everyone’s performance here just looked like warm-up (controversially, they really needed that warm-up) Also when Beth Tweddle and He Kexin did release after release, they were well executed. Yes I watch that EF about once a month.

@@brightblue2415 Agreed, we saw it in women's vault too with Jade Carey's boked vault. I understand that all the competitors have the same circumstances with no warm up. @@puffball4484 The “bendyness” of the bars as you put is is controllable. Each gymnast has a preference how they like the bags to feel depending on different factors. I think they all just preferred them looser . Or either due to not having a warm up, they weren’t able to try them out and decide. I REALLY don’t think it has anything to do with a company or the composition of them considering the apparatuses go through rigorous quantity control insuring apparatuses consistency no matter the competition. The only apparatus I’ve ever heard that has lacked consistency was the floor and that’s not even often. Imagine the injuries that would happen if the apparatuses could change depending on competition and country!

Such a disappointing finals, especially because 3 of the best bar workers in the world weren't even at the event. Nina deserved to win but was very overscored, that was her weakest routine at a major event since 2017. And while Suni is normally amazing, this was a heavily flawed routine from her, Lu Yufei should have won the Bronze.

Are the bars these days either more easily flexed or set looser than they used to be? I noticed with these Olympics how bouncy the bars look with all gymnasts and looked back at the 2000 Olympics and there is definitely a difference!! I’m wondering if they are being manufactured differently these days to allow for all of the high to low and low to high release moves, and whatnot.

It depends on the brand. This one has flexible bars. Some like it, some don't. Nothing to do with "nowadays".

@J. Amon you can't ask. It depends on the equipment brand, and different athletes have their preferences, but you work with what you get.

@@queenofnevers6990 Yes you can ask, Ilyankova and the Chinese love the Bars when they are very loose. Unlike Carolan Heduit for example who likes them very tight (but it looks like she muscles everything which is very ugly to see...).

@@queenofnevers6990 uh yes they can adjust the bars. They used to do it all the time for gymnasts back in the older days. If they allow gymnasts to put honey on the bars or chalk them up how they want, what's so far fetched about being able to adjust them?

Suni was not the best in action this time. She once scored 15.400 in the Olympics. It is obvious that she has reduced the difficulty. But also congratulations to her for getting the bronze medal.

@@MD-722 Maybe I’m not clear, but my point is that she had a high score of 15.400 in the Olympics. If her score can be used in this competition, then I believe she is definitely the champion, I just It's a pity for her.

@@kennly1267 I got what you meant, but I was pointing out that the reason she did not receive a score even close to what she could have is because she missed imperative valuable connections which meant that her start value was 0.4 lower than in qualifications (6.2 instead of 6.6). So in order to score a 15.2 she would have needed to have an E-score of 9.0 (which would have won her the gold); but instead she only had an E-score of 8.3 which resulted in the 14.5 that she got in the end.

@@kennly1267 Nina scored the exact same points in the same event (team finals), but had a higher E-value, and so, if you'd take their highest scores as reference, Nina would still have won the gold.

The commentators for gymnastics continue to drive me away from enjoying the sport. I get being critical and detail oriented, but when it's balanced with only 5-10% positive reinforcement, I cannot help but continue to admire this sport from afar. For context, I haven't watched in nearly a decade based on similar issues, and now I see not much has changed. I'll stick to track and field for my summer games viewing. At least the commentators there do a superior job of not being pretentious.
