The Olympus 12-100mm f/3.5-6.3 is by far the best travel lens for the micro four thirds system (m43 system). Although it is not ideal for low light, but for out doors and well lit places, this thing is great!!! Bring one lens for travel, and avoid the hassle of swapping lenses. The image quality is very good as well. The best part is that this lens is weather sealed, so no need to worry about this lens keeping up with you in the field.
Mr. Heng‘s mission is to #MAKEtheHOODallGOOD by encouraging everybody to be a #LifeLongLearner, and that #LoveIStheSolution to our problems.

I got the G9 in June & 2 Pany lenses - the Leica 100 ~ 400 - I do wildlife / bird shooting - & the 45 ~ 175 internal power zoom. I wanted something inexpensive to use for getting familiar with the G9 & I think the store manager really wanted to sell it so he ' gave ' it to me for $150. I later tried a # of mid - range Pany zooms but was either disappointed by their limited wide end or the lack of reach on the zoom end. A camera store employee suggested I try the Oly 12 ~ 200. The store's return policy is 7 days so I gave it a try & am so glad I did ! It's great for all the reasons you've mentioned & with the G9's excellent IBS, once I engage - back button - focus, any potential subject becomes rock steady. It's defiantly a go anywhere & do most anything lens.

Hey Mr. Heng, thanks for the thorough work-up on this lens, which I am evaluating for an upcoming trip in the snow (not eager to change lenses on the slopes, especially if we ski). I have the Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 and also a Four Thirds professional-grade lens, the Olympus 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 SWD. Those offer terrific optical performance, and I am not expecting that level from this lens. Instead, I look forward to having it as a versatile walking around lens when I am not traveling in rugged environments. I live in an oceanside city in Japan, and so it’s a mix of urban and landscape, along with some wildlife, all of which would be fun to shoot with such a broad focal range. I’m also interested in trying more 4K video, so your dive into parfocal capabilities is much appreciated. For reference, 2.5 years after you made this video, used copies of this lens are available on Amazon Japan for around US$630 used. Thanks for the informative videos with a great positive attitude!

@@mrheng562 I just sold all of my Canon gear. After almost 10 years of shooting Canon I just got tired of hauling around the heavy gear. I went all in with Olympus and haven't turned back. I love it. The R bodies aren't to bad but the glass is monstrous! Canon is an amazing camera brand and the image quality in my mind was top notch. However, now my gear weighs about 1/3 and the size is 1/3 but the image quality in the right conditions is pretty amazing for such a tiny sensor. The stabilization is AMAZING. Thanks again! Cheers.

I took it too Cambodia, and it worked, but couldn't keep up with me in the rain. It caught some wonderful memories for me, but it did get a bunch of water in it and it fogged up from the humidity. It was useless for a couple of hours until it cleared up. :) That dual IS is insanely good!!! I own the Panny 100-400mm and it's soooooooooo stable with Dual IS. I went from the Pentax DSLR system to Olympus because of the weight and size reduction possibility that M43 system promises. And looking at the latest M43 equipment how big and heavy it became, it is not funny anymore. Mirrorless M43 Olympus 12-200 is just as big as some Tamron DSLR superzoom lenses with same or even longer reach. For travel, I'll stay with my relatively lightweight Olympus 14-150 and superb Laowa 7.5.

You alluded to a comparison to the 14-150 and I have the Oly 14-150II wondering if this represents an upgrade. Don’t know if you did a direct comparison.I know the 12-200 has a greater range but it is generally a slower lens so I would like to know how the IQ of the two lenses compare within their overlapping focal lengths. Is the 12-200 as good or better where they overlap? I already know I like the IQ of the 14-150 for outdoor daylight photography and would not want a decrease in IQ just to get a bit more range.
@mrheng562
@mrheng562 5 жыл бұрын
I did not do a direct comparison, but I did think about it. But, I'm not that kind of reviewer where I do lab tests and look at corner sharpness and such. I like to field test the gears and feel how it's like to work the it. Can it keep up with me? That's my major concern. If the image looks good enough, that's good enough for what I like to do. But, not everybody work like me. :) However, after reading your comment, I went back to watch my video of Solo at Big Sur footage which was shot entirely on the GoPro 7, Panasonic GH5, and the Olympus 14-150mm mark ii. I have to say that my overall impression of looking at the video footage in different lighten conditions, they are roughly the same on the wide end and long end. However, I will give the Olympus 12-200mm an edge on the long end for slightly better image quality. If you're happy with your lens, there's no need to upgrade. I personally prefer to have reach and sacrifice some IQ due to higher ISO with that f/6.3 to get my footage. Also, weather sealed makes me feel safer than weather resistant when working in rainy and/or humid conditions. I hope that helps and I'm currently still working on my Solo at Big Sur vlogs. Please consider subscribing to follow my adventures. :)

At the moment I have a collection of lenses, the 100 - 400mm telephoto, the 100-300mm Panasonic cheap zoom, the 60mm olympus macro, the Leica dg 12 - 60mm and cheaper variant, the 35 - 100mm, the cheap 12 35mm panasonic, and Olympus Ed 9 18. I've identified a need for a quality wide and the new 9mm panasonic leica interests me as my next lense purchase. So getting a 14 180 panasonic or 12 200 olympus all round lense has its appeal but I have collection of lenses to cover most things now. Its either the 9mm prime or a quality wide zoom over my 9 to 18 Ed olympus that's ok but nothing more. Guess I have the telephoto and midrange covered, just the wide where I need to up the quality. I am finding my s22 ultra becoming my go to camera lately and the clever technology in phones seems to be outpacing photography camera. The next generation of say S23 ultra will have 200mp and will intelligently look at photo taken and add details into darks and add exposure to burnt out areas on the fly. Still feel my camera system still competes but in low light the phone now winning more often than not. Phones will never beat lense Optics and the 100 400mm crushes the phone zoom images easily with better detail and colour. Not sure what my next lense will be but the 9mm leica now available to buy but had my heart set on getting an 8 - 18 leica wide zoom.

Bro, dual IS is insanely good with Panny body and Panny lens. With the Oly, you’re gonna have to choose body IS only or lens IS only. I choose the body stabilization and utilize good stabilization techniques as well. That’s why my stabilization is pretty darn good, because I heavily rely on stabilization technique and not the camera’s. I own the PanLeica 12-60mm and that paired with the GH5 with dual IS is insane. And, so is my PanLeica 100-400mm with GH5. I was just remembering my issues with lenses like this after selling some a while ago. The problem I have with these lenses is anything over f2.8, especially f6.3 is really not enough on dark days, or when in a dense forest. Ramping the ISO up way too high, and the lack of subject isolation can make for some very boring images as well. I often feel stuck using the 35-100mm f2.8 on those days. I've had the 12-40 F2.8 Pro since I bought my EM5MII (as a kit lens). I love the lens and can't see me selling it (have thought about it, though) but I use it mainly on holidays and sometimes the 40 end is woefully short. The 12-100 has come out since, but a month or two ago when I was thinking about getting that (at some point in the future, can't afford right now) I found out about this 12-200. So one day I want to buy one of these as an single solution lens for holidays. Note I will probably still take the 12-40 with me for indoors (museums, cathedrals, etc) but the idea is I can put the one lens on the camera and not carry anything else with me that day. Hey, maybe even buy the wider angle Olympus 7-14 F2.8 Pro later down the line if I can ever justify it, let alone afford it! Someone advised me to go with the 12-100 as with the extra quality you could just crop at 100 and get similar results as the 12-200 is quite soft at the long end anyway. But it's also quite a bit more expensive, and as I'll be using this mainly on holidays and outdoors, usually in sunny places, I don't need the F4. Also, I'm not a fan of cropping, and I would imagine the 12-200 is pretty decent up to about 150 with 200 being a bonus, which on balance makes it much better than the 12-100. Also mentioned was the size, but both are pretty big anyway, both definitely go way over being "discreet", as does the 12-40. Plus, weight, which is more important, is firmly on the side of the 12-200, being not massively more than the 12-40 but still quite a bit less than the 12-100 (due to it not being F4, I guess). So my question is about quality at the 200 end and how this compares with cropping the 12-100. Note I have the 75-300 and while this is brilliant for, say, zoo trips the wide end is obviously rubbish for holidays as, although I want something with reach above 40, obviously 90% of my shots are probably wider than the 75 that offers! The 14-150 seems at first a good alternative, but as 12 is *occasionally* not wide enough, and again because I'd probably still use these lenses more at the wide end, both 12-100 and 12-200 seem far more sensible as I think losing that 12 to get more reach defeats the purpose when looking to fork out money for an all in one.

MrHeng562 That the Quality is Good enough and usability is very effective. Also that you prefer it over the 14-150.
