I guess technically, the Olympus 17mm f1.8 prime was the first micro four thirds lens I ever owned, as I got it with my Olympus Pen F. I've come a long way since then, and used dozens of different lenses, and I have to say even after all this time the Olympus 17mm f1.8 is still one of my favourite lenses.

Cracking little lens. Jack of all trades, master of... well, most, actually :) The manual focus clutch ring is genius as it allows for "normal" manual focus with the hard stops at each end.

First prime lens I bought for my MFT system and it is spectacular; its almost as good as the Summilux on my Leica X113 and that really is saying something. This hint is too late for you since you screwed your filter thread, but all my small primes I screw in a cheap metal leica style lens hood from Amazon (they are usually about £6 + a few quid postage) and leave it on permanently as it shades the lens and protects the front element from harm. With MFT lenses the permanent hood takes up almost no space in teh bag. I have to say it also makes this lens look fantastic as well ;-)

I agree, this tiny lens is super good. I bought it as a kit-lens with the Pen-F. A good focal length, not too wide, a good compromise to start in photography for example.

Agree 100%. This lens got a bad rap when it first came out - a lot of reviews said it was a tad soft. I could easily go on a trip and pack just this lens, or this lens and a standard zoom. And like you said, great for video!!

The 17mm, on my GM1, permanently lives in my bag. I tried the Lumix 14mm, but couldn't get on with the build and the rattling autofocus motor, and I wanted something a little brighter. I think I would exclude the 20mm for similar reasons, but I'm sure I would have been fine with the PanaLeica 15mm as well. The Olympus just happened to show up on the first market first, and I'm happy enough with it not to look at alternatives.

Great vid!! I got this lens recently for my G85 and absolutely love it. Small, light, but made beautifully and handles so nicely. The CLUTCH (the word you were looking for?) is wonderful. I didn’t know if that would be useful to me but make no mistake once you start using it it’s a joy to switch to Manual focus. Hard stops! Zip to infinity in no time! In fact it switches instantly to the manual focus distance you have set the last time, so if you leave at infinity for example and shoot through a window in auto but the camera selected the window, the fraction of a second you pull the clutch BAM it’s now at infinity. Smooth quiet focus and operation, for stilll and video. It’s a thing of beauty at a bargain price.

I just bought one myself a couple of weeks back. I had been impressed with the low light performance of my Laowa F2.0 7.5mm and wanted something a little more normal in perspective for low light. I am learning why this is such a well regarded lens. It was cheap on the used market, great image quality and I didn't have to bump up from ISO 200 to 400 until the sun was well behind the horizon. In combination with the great 5 axis stabilization of my Olympus cameras, I am getting shots I could never achieve before. I added a screw in lens hood to mine because I am paranoid, so If I use it with filters, i will get them to fit the hood.

I was going to get the Sigma 16mm, 30mm & 56mm trio of primes, however despite great performance I quickly dumped that idea after getting the 16mm because of the bulk and weight. I now have the Olympus 17mm, 45mm & 75mm which all together only weigh marginally more than the Sigma 16mm by itself and bulk wise are no issue to take anywhere I'm going with a camera bag. I do love the rendering on my Sigma 16mm, just the size difference between it and the Olympus 27mm f/1.8 is almost comical.

Ok...I get it now. I finally gave this lens a real try after six months in my bag. Nice and wide where most everything is in nice focus at f/1.8-2.8 but if you want a little subject separation, without any distortion, just step in closer and you get a pleasing shallower depth of field. I can see myself rocking this lens more than the 25mm and carrying the 45mm as my second lens when I want the compression and Bokeh. I could see shooting without a zoom lens.

I switched from a 20/1.7 to the 17/1.8, but never fell in love with it, so I came back to another 20/1.7. It's sharper, it's better suited for candid portraits, has great bokeh, is cheap. Only the AF sucks a bit, is a bit slow and noisy. Probably both are great lenses. I pair my GX80 with the 20/1.7 and a 45/1.8 if I go out. But if you really want to be serious in 17mm, get yourself a 17/1.2 PRO. It's in another league, in every respect though, performance, size, weight and price. ;-)

Sorry to hear about (and see!) the ding in your 17.. Ouch! The old 'swinging from the strap' gets everyone sooner or later.. I banged the bottom edge of my M5MkII so bad, it had to be sent to Olympus for repair.. (excellent customer service) As for the 17mm, I love it! So much so, I recently grabbed a used 17 PRO! You might want to try repairing the filter tread with a "lens vise". I bought one off ebay for less that US$25 to straighten out the threads on a Navitar 75mm f/1.3 lens, and it worked. It doesn't look perfect, but I can thread on a filter. The thread has to be metal, which I assume it is on the 17mm since it bent rather than chipped. Have you ever compared the 17mm to the 15mm f/1.7?

Love the lens ... this lens, the Pano 25mm and 42.5 mm are my favorite primes along with the Sony 85mm 1.8.. They work really well on my G85 and E-M10 III. Especially the latter where the whole kit is just so compact, the Jpegs straight out of the camera are gorgeous and the ND filters are cheap. BTW, love the interior shot of the Mersey Funnel ;-) ... I also have the Pan 20 1.7 and often leave it on my GX7 (which with that lens is still virtually pocket size) but find it slightly too restrictive, and not quite wide enough for general out and about. Not sure if it's just my shooting style. I've also got the Pan 25 1.4, which I bizarrely don't use very often despite loving the photos I get from it. Would never sell it but it's obviously even more restrictive than the 20 for a lens to just keep on the camera most of the time. I'm also thinking about getting the Oly 17 1.8 later on (love the Olympus clutches). Or maybe the Pan 15 1.7 (the on lens manual focus button isn't as useful as a clutch but it does have that funky aperture ring). I've heard a couple of times that the 20 is sharper than the 17 but focuses slower and louder. I've not used my 20 for a quite while (need to use my camera more), I remember it being a bit slow and noisy but not massively so. But IIRC there's two versions of the 20 lens and the second one (which I have, I think!) is a bit better and so the differences might be a bit less noticeable...
@datapro007
@datapro007 4 жыл бұрын
@@stuartnelson3202 You're right, the 20mm is a little slow and nosiy, relatively speaking. There is no improvement on version 2 vs version 1. I like it anyway - the optics are superb and the focus speed is fine. I use manual focus a lot and am mostly a stills guy, so you may feel otherwise.
@stuartnelson3202
@stuartnelson3202 4 жыл бұрын
@@datapro007 Oh yes, remember now, it's just a restyling or something isn't it? Maybe because I've never seen it as particularly slow or noisy and can't see why people are complaining about it I've just assumed there was some difference between the models. Totally agree though, it's a great performer, but I think I just need the slightly wider 17, or even 15, but which one I'm not sure yet... The only real problem I've had with my copy of the lens is there's a flake of paint (or something) visible on the inside of the body facing element, although I haven't noticed any degradation of image quality. I've seen at least one other person complaining about something similar, but it's mainly just annoying.

I really tried to love it. I actually bought (and sold) it twice. But IMO, this lens is not as sharp as the other Olympus primes, and it's rather expensive for what it is. They should have removed the clutch, packaged it like the 25/1.8 and 45/1.8, and knock off 150 € from the price in the process. Then I would agree it's a great lens. Meanwhile, I prefer the value of the Panasonic 14/2.5 for the same kind of FoV.

14 and 17 = 24 vs 35 that is quite a different angle of view? I guess its what works for you. I am shooting a lot at 17mm on my zoom at the moment trying to decide if I want to invest in a faster prime. I used to shoot at 50mm a lot on 35mm just cannot decide what I might want now. What kind of subjects do you tend to favour at 14mm?
@ordinosaurs

@@petegleeson1 : 14 mm is the same FoV as a 28 mm lens in 135 film format. Not quite as wide as 24, albeit a bit wider than 35 mm. I use it for street photography mainly. This is my favorite lens. It’s usually quite sharp, especially in the center, but there can be issues with having it wide open when taking sunset pictures (this came up last night, where the lights in the distance at sunset were blurry until I stopped down to f/4) or pictures with the moon in it. There’s also an issue where the lens sometimes starts clicking loudly when focusing; while not a serious issue with stills, it’s an annoyance when making video. My 17/1.8 had to go to the Olympus’s repair facility twice (and, yes, kudos for Olympus still repairing their gear in this day and age of cheap dispose-when-it-breaks electronics) before the issue went away. It’s a good length for stills (long enough for full body or group portraits; short enough for landscapes) but with video, unless using a high end camera (Panasonic GH5 or G9, for example) with full-width video, the video crop factor makes it a little long to always use indoors (With my GX85, with a 1.1x video crop factor, I prefer to use the Olympus 12/2.0 for indoor video, but this lens works just fine in a pinch or when travelling).

I picked up a copy of this lens a few months back and then found that exact same issue with the clicking in video. A bit of research showed this seems to be a well known issue and the best (?) Workaround is to just put it in manual focus when filming and it doesn't do it. As I didn't buy it for video I decided to keep it as it is quite nice. I also found that with a Meike 16mm extension tube it gives a reasonable impression of 1:1 macro, and that's a bonus for me!

I do both video and photo as my day job, and to be honest I do absolutely love video because it is more “fly on the wall” and less directing people. Ooo the laowa 7.5 is so good. I need it in my life !

I own it and love it. Perfect small lens for travel, street etc., but after shooting a while with the 17mm f/1.2 PRO lens, I can't justify it for my work. It will stay as a street lens.
