I use a lovely vintage OM 28mm f2.8 which gives me 56mm on my EM1, built like a tank, sharp and small, I use my Vintage OM50mm f1.8 as a 100mm with adapter for reach and prime sharpness. I prefer the vintage primes over the modern ones.

They look great on the cameras too. Like they were designed at the same time.

You‘ve given me inspiration to get my 25, 17 and 45mm f1.8 primes out of the bag and on to my new camera. Generally use the zooms, because of the clutch, even though the 17mm has one. I found the others hunted for focus and gave up with them. I actually gave my 14-42mm a whirl the other day, and was presently surprised with the focus, used on my new OM1 Mk3. Seemed better than on my OM5 Mk3.

I don't have that lens, as most of my lenses are zoom in that range. I do have the 17mm Olympus but use it for scenery and landscape. Oh yes, I use it also for astrophotography. I just might get one if I go to doing a selfie or if I start to do blogging. Thank you Brian for the content and your impressions.

Less prone to flare, I assume is a selling point against the Lumix. It is a little shorter than the Lumix. Even when on sale in the USA it is $299 or $349 compared to Lumix 25mm $150 or less. I have the Lumix 25mm, and it's OK, and at times excellent. The Lumix 30mm macro is super for up close and up to the mid-range shots -- works on the street just fine, being sharp to the edge, and very inexpensive when on sale -- made in Japan. It is longer than the 25mm Olympus, but can be used without a hood -- little to no flare issues. If you like wide, then the 14mm Lumix, also made in Japan, is very much the buy for all MFT fans. In a slower lens, the Lumix 12-32mm is a great inexpensive lens. The Lumix 12-60mm is highly underrated and though the cheaper kit is slower, a very sharp lens -- just not a fast lens. Hey, we get sun here on the Coast of California, most days, so slower lenses are less the issue, with the primes always close at hand. Take care, Loren

Thanks, new to this format and first decent camera (E-M10) since my Zenit-E in the 70's! Just bought one, used 'as new' from MPB, not cheapest but good saving on the new price.

They are a brilliant camera to enter both digital photography and micro 43 format. I advised my sister to get one for her first digital camera and it worked a treat. Good choice.

Nice review Brian, slightly more expensive which I got second hand but love my lumix 1.4 mk1

Just got one on order over the weekend. Aesthetically a perfect match to all the Olympus bodies. The Lumix one feels a bit wide and plasticky on the smaller bodies. My Lumix lens gave me some kind of slightly confused edges in the image at f/1.7 that made me not use the lens for an event I photographed recently. I used an old ZUiko 28mm f/2.8 instead. However, testing the lens on printed material subjects the Lumix did seem just about as sharp as any other lens I had when stopped down.

I find it is good to challenge yourself occaisionally and leave the zooms at home and go out with the 25mm. A challenge to use a fixed focal length and a change of perspective!

Images from the 25mm reminded me of my 45mm. That was the first thing I noticed after my 17mm 1.8 was stolen and I purchased the 25mm. Just a bit higher IQ over the 17mm.

UPDATE: I now have the Olympus 25mm, which is great, but for one little issue --- cannot budge the beauty ring to get it off for a hood attachment. I might have to use the lens without the hood. I guess it has good flare resistance. - Loren

Try not to grip it too tight. I had a similar problem on the 45 mm and discovered it cam off easily when I was very light with it but wouldn’t budge if I squeezed it.

It’s a great lens but a few years ago have been getting rid of anything that isn’t water resistant for Florida weather. I so wish they would make that 17mm 1.8 water resistant. I probably would have never bought a x100v

Only decent reason I've heard was autofocus performance, but not sure it differs THAT much. I do have some third-party lenses on my Oly body, ans have no issues with autofocus. Other than that - go for Lumix. Very good lense, loved it very much. Too bad I've sold it together with old body and contemplating buying new one... 😄Leica 25mm and Oly 25mm didn't got my attention

If you have Olympus body, go for Olympus. The Panasonic shows more violent fringing on Olympus bodies, as it is optimized for Panasonic bodies with a slightly different camera body UV cut filter. In addition, Panasonic 25 1.7 has a focus shift problem, which occurs up to f4. It is a bit annoying. Overall, Olympus is the better lens, but a bit more expensive.

The lens is still a 25mm, it does not have the compression of a 50mm. The resulting image will be nothing more than a cropped image taken with a 25mm lens. Objects closer to the lens will be elongated and distance in the near background will be magnified. It is an excellent wide angle lens but not a "nifty fifty"
@ThatMicro43Guy
@ThatMicro43Guy Жыл бұрын
Very true, however, this is the same argument levelled at 35mm (full frame) cameras by the large format guys in days of old. It will never be like for like but the angle of view is approximately the same (taking into account the different sensor aspect ratios), you are correct that the compression and the depth of field will be different, as you say, a cropped 25mm lens.
@sailor583
@sailor583 Жыл бұрын
My whole point, is just that calling the lens a nifty fifty can give the wrong idea to people just starting in photography. Next thing we could have some thinking that using a 35mm with a crop factor of 2X would be a good lens for portrait photography.
@InertiaEffect

It's equivalent to a nifty fifty when talking about the field of view.

If I was to switch to this format for street and urban photography, would I be able to get quality images printed as big as A2 or A1 for gallery type shows. I dont have any experience in micro 4/3 but I need to switch from full frame to a system of far less weight and bulk. love your work and knowledge. great style

I’ve made 40*30 prints from 16Mp M43 cameras which were stunning. If you are going to pixel peep then yes, you will be disappointed but from a print point of view a 20Mp M43 is no better or worse than a 20Mp FF or APS-C. Thanks for the compliments

@@daviddyephotography that’s probably the MFT biggest problem against FF. However, it’s not the huge difference made out in the press but it is noticeable by a stop or so I’d say. Best wishes
