@Dogfacewilson the Haoge HG-EMK5III. I ordered it from Amazon. It works perfectly. Very light and protects the bottom plate. Battery is accessible. And it has a piece that can be added if you want to do portrait orientation with a tripod (which I never do).

Absolutely true! In fact, I still have my original 16 mPx Olympus PEN E-P5 from 9 years ago, and it still performs perfectly, especially with the newer m.Zuiko lenses. The E-P5 was just a slightly smaller version of the great original M5, and while that PEN doesn't have all the "overkill" features in today's cameras, I just can't bring myself to part with it. In fact, I also can't seem to part with any of my older Nikons either, but I almost always reach for that PEN because it's so easy to carry and still so much fun to use.

@@lindadee2053 I’ve been thinking of picking up a used PEN because I like the size and would be great for travel, even though I have the Ricoh GR3 already kind of covering that area. But it’s nice to have the weather sealing of the EM1, it’s already come in handy.

Agreed. James Popsys just did a video where he picked up a ten year old used Lumix GX1 M43 camera for £55 or so and he loves using it. I still have my old GX7 and can't seem to part with it, even though it needs a sensor cleaning (dirt behind the glass over the sensor). Was a great little unit. In fact, I only upgraded because of that dirt, plus the image stabilisation of the EM-5 III and only then because I found it on clearance for £729 with the 12-45 f4 Pro lens. The GX7 with the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 lens is still a beautiful combination.

Thinking of doing this. From EM10 mk ii. Love the EM10ii but crap autofocus on video. Use mostly for photos and is great for that. Like the size more than the DSLR look of the EM1 cameras. I think the EM10 Mk ii black is the most gorgeous camera ever, at least since the original OM2. Has the nicest finish of all the OMDs.

Hey Peter, there's one more upgrade from E-M5II and E-M10 series, which I think you forgot to mention and it's phase-detect AF. As you surely know, depending on what you're shooting, this can be game changer in accuracy and AF speed. :-) It's really nice to see this in the E-M5 series (so same as E-M1) series. And like you said, more than one C button or Mysets is really something that should be re-added through FW upgrade if possible. :-)

Its a pocket D500. It may not be the very best of anything, but it is more than competent at everything, light, ergonomically brilliant and a pleasure to use. I have a Fuji camera also, ostensibly something higher end than the EM5, but 8 out of 10 shots I take are on the EM5.

The fact that you can designate custom modes to mode dials in the EM5ii is fantastic. For my needs the mark ii is good enough, more than good enough.

I like the EM5-3 but only one custom mode is a drawback. The ability to set MySets to the mode dials was a great featrure on all the OMD and EPL cameras before the EM5-3/EPL8. It meant you could have four custom settings and assign them anywhere on the dial. I replaced the photo-story, Art and i-auto settings with custom modes on my earlier EM10-ii and Em5-ii.

Nice summary. I would have bought an em5 mk3 if I weren't so used to the grip on em1 mk2. The lighter weight would be an advantage, but I prefer to have the same usability in every situation.

Depends on use -- what an individual values, so I guess the answer is yes, and no. Doing mostly street these days, I bought the Lumix GX-9 + 12-60mm lens for $798, with tilt-only screen, and the features which match my use the best. So it was worth buying. In Olympus line, I have an EM 10 mkII and a PL-8 which are both well built metal cameras, and once decommissioned, so to speak, will look great on the shelf as a display. The 45mm lens is great! Best thing I bought from Olympus -- excellent. Good to see some camera deals again. I bought a Canon RP + 24-105mm lens, for $999 and tax free some time ago. And the Olympus deals were super good back when --- just a few hundred -- half off deals. Fujifilm perked my imagination the last year or two, but really, I have the MFT lenses, and a Canon RP for low light -- takes great JPGS too. It is good all around. And I am really liking the results for street use with the Lumix GX-9 and a 30mm macro lens from Panasonic -- solid built gear. Take care, Loren J Schwiderski

My major issue with the EM5 Mark III is that the buttons for changing the focus points are too small for my fingers. When I'm using the camera in the street and trying to quickly move the focus points to the subject of interest, I end up hitting the wrong place on the dial or even hitting the wrong button. I really wish there was a joy stick like in the EM1 Mark III. Otherwise, I feel this camera is a perfect combination of size, weight, and toughness for my shooting. Thanks Peter for another informative video,.

Hi Peter! Interesting video as always! I've a question: is that a suggested way to store our IBIS Olympus / OM System cameras in our camera bags? I'm always worried that storing ibis cameras in "portrait" orientation could possibly damage the cameras while storing them for prolonged time (weeks, months?) without shooting, but the manual doesn't suggest anything about storing. Sorry for the silly question, hope i haven't upset anyone.

Good question! I also worry about needing to run a short distance holding a camera and how this effects the life of the ibis....
@StephenStrangways
@StephenStrangways 2 жыл бұрын
The manual doesn't tell you to store the camera in a certain orientation because it does not matter. Storing the camera in any direction you like will not damage the IBIS system.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 2 жыл бұрын
I do not think it matters ho you store you camera what it comes to IBIS. I always turn my camera off and when I store it. That is not even necessary if you have auto switch on.
@frankkatusa6855
@frankkatusa6855 Жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter unless you store it above or below the temperature extremes. I would worry more about storing it in your camera bag where mold can easily grow on a damp lens, internals etc. I have always stored my cameras on shelves in an open cabinet with air circulating. If I had to store in a bag I used several of those anti-dessicant packs especially in tropics or during high humidity or rain. Yes they are weather sealed but they are not air sealed and air carries humidity and condensed water vapor cause mold to grow in the dark. Just my 2 cents.

You might also consider the narrower range 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO lens, the mark i original version that won't say mark i. It just will not say mark ii either! The original one can be got for about 250 GBP less than the mark ii. I saw it for 489 GBP in UK recently. Looked last week and it was 429! The mark ii was something like 779 and has even come down to 679ish. Olympus deflation! I have the mark i version and the images seem to pop out at you and hit you in the face. Also focuses pretty close.

Thanks Peter. This is the body I opted for after a long layoff from photography, and it’s also my first (and only) introduction to the m43 universe. At the time (Spring 2020), I couldn’t justify spending the money on the EM-1 Mk III. But this one was offered with the 12-45 F4 Pro lens as a kit-and, as a pair, it’s perfect for most situations (at least, for the photography I do) and as a lightweight travel combo. I’ve since added the 20mm F1.4 Pro as my low-light go-to solution, and it’s another winning combination with this body. I may yet add the 40-150 F4 Pro to round out my lens collection for travel purposes (and I’m skipping the noise from those who squawk about the F2.8 Pro versions of the same or similar lens as being the superior options). Their faster apertures certainly are nice, but not the larger sizes and associated weights. If I’d needed those for my shooting, I’d still have bought them, so I don’t see any downside to what I have as the F4 lenses suit my actual needs. To this day, I’m extremely pleased with this setup, and am aware of the few deficiencies it may have compared to the other up-level bodies-but they’re not enough to make me feel I bought the wrong model. It’s the right one for me.

Hey Peter! How are you feeling these days, better I hope. This is my main youtube camera, and when I want to go very light, this is what I use instead of my EM1X. For my dashboard adventures, it is mounted upside down with a suction cup mount, works awesome. The Oly 12mm f2 is practically glued on the camera. The reason I like this camera is that I call it my mini X, has the same sensor, so my post work is the same for both cams. Cheers!

Recently I took the opportunity of the discount and replaced my Pen-F with the E-M5 III. Mainly because of the better ergonomics and weather sealing, but enhanced AF and ProCapture are also appreciated. Together with the 12-45 mm and the 75-300mm it makes the perfect travel package. But feature-wise the now similar priced Lumix G9 is a very strong competitor.
@Bakin
@Bakin Жыл бұрын
I agree but I have owned both the Panasonic G9 and presently own the Olympus E-M5 III and for me the E-M5 III is the better camera. The G9 is a great camera but it is simply too big when compared to the E-M5 III and the Auto-Focus of the G9 does not compare to the Phase Detect AF of the E-M5 III. I believe one of the best attributes of a MFT camera is the compact size especially if you ever plan to travel.

I see a few comments about the base plate breakages here. If anyone is worried they can add a Haoge grip which eliminates any concerns, it is made of a block of milled aluminium and spreads any load across the entire base of the camera, improves the ergonomics and is arca-Swiss compatible. Mine cost me around $50usd. I have absolutely no concerns carrying mine on a tripod with the 40-150 f2.8 attached

I love my EM5 Mark III. I think for most people, it's all the camera they need. While not *quite* as perfect in the hand as the EM 10 Mark IV, it's still comfortable enough, looks great, performs well, weather-sealed, all that good stuff. One note though: while it feels solid in the hand, don't attach a strap to the tripod mount like the Peak Design Capture Clip. There's tons of evidence on Reddit, but you will break the bottom of that camera mount over time. Because it's a composite, and not magnesium alloy like their higher end cameras. But if you plan on not using the tripod mount, or just mounting it to a tripod, the value of this camera is really hard to beat.

I was going to write about this as well. I would have owned only the E-M5iii had it not been for the PD-Clip issues. I also use 12-100 often, and would hesitate to put it on the E-M5 iii on a tripod. One of my favourite features of this camera is the screen which you can fold round to face the body, protecting it when not in use. I also use the viewfinder only a lot so folding the screen away also protects it when in use. I think all cameras should have this. A small niggle I have is that the microphone socket cover is a bit loose and often pops off. Does anyone else have this problem? I never use it so I need to think of some way of fixing it in place semi permanently.

It can shoot 120fps slow motion video which is em1ii can not. That was only reason I got em5iii, but now I think It's one of the best camera in the MFT system. It has better IQ than em1ii and significantly lighter. I think it has more richer colors and dosen't show purples at dark noisy area unlike em1 series including em1x. It is my 1st pick of my gears including ff bodies in almost every situations (although I have g9, em1ii, em1x, r6 etc).

If the OM5 uses the same sensor, body, battery, whatever as the EM5 MKIII, but adding more tools with true pic IX, then I want a smartguy who would be able to cook an unofficial/Or Official update of the main engine.(One of the first reasons I liked four third cameras back then, was their update capacity... Recently, these updates were very...light to say the least.)Imagine one moment, that for, lets say, a hundred bucks, I could update my EM5 in OM5... WoW! And since in general, nobody will need to change his EM5 mk III for an OM5, anyway, it is not a loss for OM System. Quite the opposite in my opinion. So much that I would not be surprised to find this possibility in their business strategy to gain market shares. It would also explain AND EXCUSE the fact that the sensor in the OM5 is the same... What do you think 😉

I will never sell my EM5mk3. For me it’s the perfect size and weight for m4/3 lenses. I’m using it daily paired with a m.zuiko 75-300mm and the grip for wildlife. Walking the dog to the cafe - it’s paired with the 17mm f1.8. The grip comes off to store in a smaller bag. I couldn’t see any difference in image quality (video or stills - uses same sensor) or performance to my now sold EM1mk3. I love this camera also because it has PDAF which the mk2 didn’t have. I reach for this camera because it inspires me to shoot. I know it sounds corny but I think the shutter sound and design is the best of all the OM-D family.

It's funny how we have favourite things. For me it's the black EM10 mark ii that has the best ever black finish. Next to the EM1s and earlier EM5s with that rough knobbly finish, the EM10ii looks so much better. Plus it's metal and feels great. I'm still thinking I'd like a new EM5 iii though after looking at the EM1 marks i, ii and iii secondhand. Can't beat a 2½ or 3 year warranty and I like the smaller size of the EM10s and EM5s and the EM5iii seems to be dropping in price.

I have a 1 mark mark iii and find it a good camera. What keeps bothering me with Olympus digital is the limited dynamic range and the quality of the EVF. I prefer bright objects and this too often results in a lot of orange and blue in the viewer. That is why I keep my OM4Ti.😇🤫☺️. None of all the great digital features, but more details in the bright and dark parts of e.g. a narrow street in Italy.

There are some features which I like but won't enumerate them here . Robert if you know an Olym. camera not tech heavy let me know please. thanks I agree with limited (very) dynamic range and the EVF.

Hi Peter, I'm a Canon full frame shooter thinking of switching to Olympus. I know that Olympus cameras have good image quality, so that's not the main issue for me. I do some hand held property photography. I use the exposure bracketing function quite a lot and can take 3 photos in succession with a 3 stop difference between each photo. Can the Olympus E-M1 MK III do the same thing ? Thanks for your help.

BLACK! Unless you like silver. 🤣 I have EM10 mark ii in silver and in black. I wanted black. The local dealer had it in silver. So I just bought it. Silver looks lovely with the chrome rings and black writing... but the BLACK EM10 mark ii is ... GORGEOUS! It's just so BLACK! It actually looks a little smaller than the chrome one, though it isn't. However, the EM10ii has a different black finish. Much nicer than the EM1 and EM5s that have that rough surface. The polycarbonate EM5 iii looks less rough on the surface than the mark ii but I bet it's still not quite as nice as the EM10 mark ii finish plus the cool feel of actual metal. I mean one day in my home town many years ago in the 1980s, a dude drove down the street in a black Lotus Esprit. It shat on the red ones. It was ultimate. Then in London I saw a black MX5. About the cutest car I ever saw but could not beat the Lotus. Think black Olympus OM2.

Peter, I understand that you are an OMDS ambassador and I appreciate your videos very much, but this vid is too euphemistic for me. One of the controversies you haven't mention, for example, is that there were no official statements from Olympus regarding user reports about broken baseplates. So I am very apprehensive about using the camera on tripods. And also extremely annoying about this camera is that all settings are lost with (almost) every firmware update - I have to redo all my adjustments four times so far (including custom modes and all setting options, so very time consuming). And Olympus/OMDS has totally failed to give any feature updates. No starry sky af, no sweep panorma, no option to save settings and a face af that is way behind competition in modern times. Therefore, OMDS, if you still want to sale this camera nowadays, you have to provide a proper software update, otherwise the summer deal looks more like a loveless sell-off.

I agree regarding broken baseplates. I bought the camera on the base of it being the ‘perfect’ camera for adventure travel…. Small, tough and weatherproof. I was enjoying the camera up until the base plate broke mid-trip. I tried to have my local Olympus dealer fix the camera but they did not want to help me. I finally found a repair shop that agreed to replace the plate (but not under warranty). It is still in the shop. I hope to get the camera back someday, but in the meantime I have replaced it with the much tougher E-M1 MarkIII. I wish I would have known about the seemingly common baseplate ‘problem’ before buying. Olympus owed this to their loyal customer base, especially if they are marketing the camera as an ultimate adventure travel camera.

After owning 2 photography studios and a private black and white lab, teaching photography at college level, using almost every film format including 8x10, using digital cameras for 20 or more years, after selling my Canon bodies with L lenses because they were just too heavy with advancing age and arthritis, aftere selling my prints for decades, even 2 months ago I bought this Camera, a Mark II body and three lenses including a 1000US$ 8mm to something mm, macro lens and medium zoom lens I can honestly say this camera is the worst mistake I have made. Every other camera, from Deardoffs, Hassies film and digital , Canons film and digital from consumer amateurs to high end pro models I could open the box , charge the battery, load film or put in card and shoot...THEN learn what I wanted to learn about the camera. This thing was a dog from the get-go 2.5 stops under, has little range in contrasty scenes, overkill on "all it can do", but what it does have is the light weight I wanted. Granted I will admit I do not use or need all the bells and whistles . I am not going to debate this because it is my experience and judgement after 50 years of photo experience with some travel covers under my belt, lots of ad work, social events, political campaigns, wedding , portfolios, commercial work... etc etc. I don't think it is worth it at all. I'm selling this after I get back from Europe and I am NOT taking this with me. I'm using my phone . I bought this in Jan 2022 and rarely used it....it isn't reliable....sorry Mark III lovers....just one guys opinion.
