One of the more popularly requested "how to video" was about Focus Stacking for Olympus cameras, and finally I managed to get one made. In this video I explained why the situations where focus stacking is needed, how focus stacking works in Olympus OM-D cameras and how to activate it, as well as a few limitations that come with this feature and tips on using it.

Before anyone asks "why is there no Focus Stacking in my camera?" or "why is the focus stacking icon greyed out?", please see the full compatibility list here 8:20 If your camera or lens is not in that list, you cannot use Focus Stacking. And no it does not work with Panasonic lenses on Olympus bodies.

Hi Robin, thank you for this excellent video. I'm using E-M5 II with 12-40 mm PRO, but Set number of shots is grayed out. Set focus differential and Charge time are both available. The same result with 7-14mm PRO. I tried restarting the camera, but to no avail. However, when using an incompatible lens (75mm 1.8), all options are available, though I cannot turn Focus Stacking on. Firmware version is 4.0, and the camera is in AF mode. Any idea why?

Same with em5 mkii and 60mm macro... Maybe this is a newer feature since the Olympus link shows this option also greyed out. learnandsupport.getolympus.com/learn-center/photography-tips/macro/focus-stacking-bracketing-with-om-d#:~:text=The%20focus%20stacking%20feature%20will,jpeg%20file%20at%20full%20resolution.

If you have the E-M5 II, E-M1, or E-M1 II, you can enable focus stacking for other AF lenses not in that list using modified firmware: www.mu-43.com/threads/modified-firmware-looking-for-users.99804/ - I can confirm this works on an E-M5 II with the following lenses: 45mm 1.8, 75mm 1.8, 40-150mm 4-5.6.

You missed to mention Olympus Tough TG5 and TG6 - They both have In camera Focus stacking and I absolutely love it! They can do normal distance Focus stacking as well as for extreme close up (macro) images right out of the box. And they actually do have In Camera Image stabilization, very much needed to stay in low ISO for still images in low light situations. The TG5 and TG6 are the last two iterations of the Olympus underwater ruggedized cameras with a 5,6 crop factor sensor, in the TG6 the focus stacking can be adjustet from 3 to 10 images. They have the Truepic VIII image processor of the OM-D E-M1X inside! I'm not joking, they are way more serious useable cameras than the outside looks seem to indicate.

Great instructional video Robin. A couple of points - 1 - If your subject (or you) moves during the shooting process then your image may be spoiled. Therefore may not work well when photographing subjects like active insects or if the weather is windy. 2. The wider the depth setting, the longer the shooting process takes, which can exacerbate the issue in point 1.

Focus stacking with my E-M1mk2 and 60mm saved my lockdown days!!! Lucky me that I bought them just two weeks before the lockdown here in Italy!! I just want to point out that sometimes a depth level of 10, or even less, it's no good because you can have some parts of the final image out of focus between a step and onther. Ciao Ah one more thing, you can also use Olimpus Viewer to recreate the focus stacking final image, and it will not be cropped.

I noticed on the EM5iii in focus bracketing (not stacking) that if you choose focus differential of 10 and go from quite close on an image that also has stuff much further away and choose a large number of frames, say 30 (not 999🤣), then the camera will take only around 7 images. It gets to infinity way before the end of the run and then stops. If you choose small focus differentials, it will take more images.

Good explanation. Not sure if mentioned in a comment but it's also important for the subject to be stationary, for instance a macro of an insect or flower, the bug can't move or the flower can't move in a breeze. The camera will not be able to stack the images.

I have used this facility quite a lot and have had a lot of fun with it. You did not mention that it can give an incredible depth of focus with e.g. the 12-100 F4 Pro lens. Shooting at F8 with the setting of wide gives a depth of focus from about 150mm from the lens to near infinity. For example a small flower in its landscape. I have had a slight problem in shooting straight down on a conical flower using the 60mm Macro. It was very close work at 1:1. Here there was a 'ghost echo' in the final image as it incorporated the out of focus bits in each taken image in the final image. Were I an expert in Photoshop I could probably remove it. Similar ghosting appears when photographing grass stems at close range with a very light breeze. At dusk for example.

I love the focus stacking feature, and I did not know that the M1 can do more than 8 frames, that will be a reason for me to finally upgrade, as I often fall short in macro ( with my EM5II) and jump to normal bracketing because of it ... I use this focus stacking feature sometimes to simply get a preview, and while shooting in RAW, you also get the single RAW files, not only the final jpg, so you can still stack the raw files yourself in post processing and do a bit more editing ... greetings ;)

For "Set Number of Shots" you recommend 15...which I agree with if you're in a controlled environment. However I find 3 handy when I shooting macro on windy days or with squirrelly subjects that like to move. The lower shot count will reduce composite errors and ghosting that can occur with movement. The other point I would like to make is that using a flash is often impractical with focus stacking...so often photographers need to choose between the two...and for macro having the flash can often be the better option.
@TasView

Hi Robin. I have sorted out the issue with the greyed out number of shots when focus stacking was activated. Basically my camera, although only bought relatively recently, needed firmware updating. Great Video Robin. I just had a job at my day job where we had to photograph our States constitution. Hi Robin. I have been doing focus stacking hand held !! Not always so easy and due to movement can result in a “ghosting” at edges of image. I now use a carbon fibre walking stick with camera attachment on the top to gain stability. Still some sideways movement but considerably better. The walking stick is very very light to carry and has 3 adjustable sections giving an amazing variation of low to high position. Basically acts as a monopod. Due to recent cancellation of 3 overseas nature and wildlife trips because of the virus I have just spent the money on 2 Olympus pro lenses. I blame you entirely for this decision ha ha !!!!!! 😊😊

Thanks for informative video. I've been trying to figure out how to make this work on my EM5 MK III. I did not realize that I needed a dedicated Olympus macro or any of those Pro lenses to make this feature work. I can get the camera to take the bracketed images with the kit lens, but it just won't combine them. That's a real shame, since I have eight different Olympus lenses but none of them are on that list. I think it's a real shame that Olympus blocked out all but the most expensive lenses. Obviously the camera is capable of combining the photos, but apparently Olympus wants customers to pay an extra $1,000 for the privilege of using this function on their nice new camera. :-(

You selected 6 or 7, is this a creative choice or for a technical reason. If used for Landscape, I assume 10 would be best if you want front to back focus? Late to this video as just getting around to trying this cool feature on my Em1. Thanks Ribin

Who needs Batman? WE HAVE ROBIN!!!! OK Robin, this was an excellent video with information that will help me a lot when I get my 60mm macro this week. NOW the question is, when will you explain focus bracketing? Hope you are doing well there in Coronaland..... it's dangerous over there!!!!!

I don't use focus bracketing or stacking much. You must also be aware that I have a different insect macro shooting technique. Don't think I will do a focus bracketing any time soon.

Damn, these camera's are insane! I wish my Nikon z50 haves this focus stacking program! Maby I should switch to micro four thirds. Thinking of buying the OMD em1 mark 2 or 3. The mark 3 is a lot more expensive! What do you recommend for macrophotography?

Great Video Robin as always..Quick question, I have just purchased the 60mm Macro Lens for the Olympus E-M1 mark 3 that I have also bought. I have set the Focus Bracketing and Focus stacking as shown in your video, but when I take the pic and then look at what I have captured in the Picture gallery I notice it has stored ALL the pics of the subject, I thought it merged them all into one, am I doing something wrong in the settings ? ( Sorry, that wasn't really a quick question after all 😳)
