The BEST Olympus Lens? amzn.to/2oPjQ7t:
The Love of My Life (camera wise) - amzn.to/32nPnvQ
---
Today I share with you my review of the Olympus OMD-EM5 MKIII. This is a mid tier camera form Olympus, and lies just under the pro bodies and above the start EM10.
It's like a mini EM1 MKII with it's cinema 4K, upgraded AF, upgraded 5 Axis IS, upgraded speed, Eva and well, everything else.
This camera is fast, small, light and delivers WOW performance, even with out of camera JPEG. I had no issues with the camera!

Thanks for watching everyone. I had a blast shooting the Olympus EM5 MKIII. It's the camera placed in the middle of the lineup between the Pro (EM1) and Starter (EM10) cameras. It's a lot like the Em1 MKII and a big upgrade to the now 4 1/2 year old EM5 MKII. But with full frame mirrorless becoming so popular can Micro 4/3 still compete? Leave your thoughts below if you like!

Calling the EM1 series "pro" is a bit of a stretch. They're more like nichy enthusiast consumer cameras. The MFT system as a whole isn't really equipped to handle professional work.

What I'd like to know is how is the buffer? While I really enjoyed the em5mk2, i felt the buffer was noticeably less compared to the em1mk1 I owned before it. Waiting for buffer to catch up was a handicap at times. If generational technology does in fact trickle down subsequent model lines, I'm hoping the em5mk3 has improved the buffer to at least as good as the em1mk1, I could live with that. If not, I think I may have to reconsider.

My OM-D E- MK10 III is my favorite travel camera, but it's Not weather sealed like the E-M5III. I hike, ski, bike., etc.. Weather sealing of the E-M5 III is an attractive feature. I'm new to MFT owning Pana Gx8 and Oly Pen F with Oly primes and PL zooms for the OIS. The Body I'm holding out for is the better AF for fast action while maintianing compact theme of MFT and not just splash proof; but freeze proof. Hight dessert country gets cold at night. Panasonic released the DC-G95 and it has Live Veiw Composition similar to Oly Live Composition Mode. While it does not have the advanced AF; yet IS program continuous to incorporate lens and body with a greater selection of lenses. So the Oly promo videos show 2 and 4 sec hand held nite shots w/o indicating lens details. To get that pic you have to engage with a one of two Oly IS lenses, 300mm or 12-100mm f4 Pro. Tough call between to the mid-range compact bodies for me. Could wait for a Pana G9 update; however I have bigger Canon gear and the MFT system is all about small. Just say'n.

Olympus 5 axis is stellar, and I love how to shoot night street scape with it. the 5 axis helps tremendously, iso 800 f1.4 at night, I shoot dim alleys fine. However I went from Olympus to Panasonic for awhile now, I got a smallish GF7 extremely cheap when my Olympus finally gave up. And I went to G85 since I missed 5axis so much, also very cheap. Still miss Olympus 5 axis, but for now these 2 are more than capable enough.

I've bought many Panasonic and Olympus cameras, and I've been rolling with a GX85 since 2016, but honestly, I had started to wonder where was Panasonic at with its refusal to ever do PDAF, would I have to switch systems if I wanted a capable 4K hybrid camera? Nope, almost improbably, Olympus is here to save the system and just made probably the single best hybrid prosumer camera ever made. Only Fuji has the native lenses to compete with Olympus, but Olympus has the incredible IBIS, PDAF, articulated screen, uncropped 4K all in a compact body.
@youknowwho9247

How is this the best hybrid camera? It has a worse feature set than both the X-T3 and the a6400, much, much worse image quality thanks to its tiny and outdated sensor, yet it costs the same as the far superior competition. It's a symbol of what MFT has become - overpriced, sub par gear plus lots of marketing.

@@jof1954 Pretty much every modern camera has pdaf, and nobody but vloggers need an articulated screen. The X-T3 does 4k60 and all other options at this price point don't crop either. Except this Olympus only has 20 mpix from a sensor that's several years old and in the tiny MFT format, which means it's low res and high noise. It's very clearly the worse choice for a camera at this price point because of its inferior image quality.

Hey, does anyone know if the preamps on the em5 mkiii are any good? That was a huge issue with my em5 mkii. Super hissy preamps. I always had to use an external recorder (not so compared to the G85 which had great preamps , but terrible autofocus) I really don't mind the plastic, especially with the better image quality and autofocus upgrade. I'd pull the trigger if someone can vouch for the audio.
@evshrug
@evshrug 4 жыл бұрын
What external recorder did you use? I think a dedicated device will always have superior components (like the preamps) than built-in options, plus you could always buy better external recorders. I guess I could use a phone... would be nice to have a shotgun mic for fixing on top of the camera hotshoe, and then a Sennheiser AMBEO Smart Headset for capturing 3D atmospheric audio.
@HavokSage
@HavokSage 4 жыл бұрын
@@evshrug like i said, I switched to panasonic. Problem solved. They don't have issues with bad preamps. Audio is clear out of the box. When I was on the em5mkii I used my pc to record audio from my condenser mic. Quality was perfectly fine but it's a pain. I gave up on olympus in general. The quality just isn't there anymore, the only good thing was the IBIS. Messing with external recorders is no good. this Em5 mkiii was the camera that was supposed to convince me to come back to olympus. but apparently the auto ISO is broken and 1080p is still super soft. No word on the preamps yet, but I heard a bit of hiss on the videos i've seen so far. You can never be sure if people are running noise reduction over the videos or not.

Dynamic range on Micro 4/3 Olympus. bodies has been excellent since the EM1 MKII. No issues there at all. But of course, the smaller sensor will not have the qualities of a full frame. I see this for those who shoot family, trips, casual, etc. For that demographic, this is an outstanding camera as it delivers much nicer quality than any phone, much nicer color than some other camera brands, and JPEGS that you do not have to mess around with much. @youknowwho9247
@youknowwho9247 4 жыл бұрын
@Tom Lismer IBIS is generally worse than lens based images stabilization, that's not even controversial. The only reason it's rather effective in some MFT models is because they employ both at the same time. And while that's a nice gimmick to have, it's no substitute for proper low light performance. If you're photographing anything but a static scene, or one where motion blur is intentional, IBIS doesn't help you. As such, it's generally useless for shooting any type of photography that involves moving subjects. It's also only an advantage compared to full frame, if the full frame shooter is forced to shoot above ISO 800 (ISO 400 for APS-C) in the same situation. That's rarely the case in static scenes when using good glass. Let's go with real world examples. Cases where IBIS is no advantage are any type of sports shooting, wildlife, events, street photography, portraiture. What's left is maybe night time architectural or landscape photography. If you're serious about either of those, you've got a tripod with you anyway since no amount of IBIS replaces that. When there is a tripod involved, full frame is roughly four stops cleaner than MFT, APS-C is one to two stops cleaner. Conclusion: MFT comes with a lot of compromises in terms of image quality. IBIS is a crutch that does not make up for those.
@richardg3335
@richardg3335 3 жыл бұрын
@@youknowwho9247 sorry, but you are wrong! IBIS is better than any lens based system. I have seen lots of examples comparing them and the lens system doesn't come close. And with the dual system is even better. Also I have been comparing the photos at pixel level between micro 4/3 rds and the others. APS-C is about 1 stop better in low light, and FF is about 2 to 3 stops better, depending on who made the sensor.
@youknowwho9247

@Mike Zielinski First of all, it's "skin tones", not "flesh tones". Before you get into an argument with someone, learn the language so you don't embarrass yourself. Second, "colour science" is a marketing buzzword with zero real world meaning. Professionals shot raw, and two seconds in Lightroom can make the colours of any brand look like the colours of any other brand if the user knows that they're doing. Of course you'd know that if you had any experience with professional photography, rather than being a KZfaq armchair commentator.

@@briand3239 Well the benefits of this is that it is pretty much an EM1 MKII within a small body. So if you like the body design of this, and size of this, it could be seen as a benefit to this camera. Same sensor, improved 5 Axis, 10 FPS, new improved AF performance and pretty extreme weather sealing. It's truly like a mini EM1 MKII. But yes, what you said makes sense. When I see this camera, my first thougts where like, this should be the specs of the E-M5 MKII some years ago. This camera now, is just to late. Way to late. I loved my E-M5 MKI but Olympus didn't deliver any new tech. So I also went off from them. My biggest complain with mFT was always the noise at base ISO. No blue sky without noise in the RAWs. I get a very similar performance at base ISO from a 1" sensor sized camera. My mom moved on from her E-M10+14-150mm to a Sony RX100 VI an while she misses the 100mm in tele, it's the better over all package. I bought a G5X MKII with it's 24-120mm F1.8-2.8 recently and the performance is to close to Olympus, as I'am willing to carry that stuff with me. You can't compare both of them i.Q. whise to something like my A7RIII. And I really have to disagree with you in terms of lower ISOs, you can't compare it even there. Olympus misses to implement a REAL ISO100 or even lower ISO64 in it's cameras and thats it's weakness.

It's a bit pricey in the modern line up I think, but give it a couple of months and there should be some good deals I reckon. Sadly I don't feel like I missed out - even the 6d/2 sensor in my RP that people love to bash is such a big step up over any of the m43 cameras I've had in the last 7 years when it comes to collecting light, that really I'm not going back. M43 might not make sense for me anymore, but I do hope this does well as I think it fills a niche market that others just don't. @@maxfactor4209 yeah, I agree that new iPhone is very exellent, but it is just a smartphone, not a true camera, right ? What about small sensor ? You can shoot long-explosure if you want, you can shoot timelapse or milkyway, firework or so on with a "pro" camera and learn how to shoot them by setting up everything in your camera manually (choosing lens, setting up right aperture, ISO, WB, SS and almost everything), so from time to time you can understand how to do it properly. Can you do it with a smartphone ?

olympus made a huge mistake supporting an outdated format like Micro 4/3. It's laughably small, and therefor dictates lens design trying to chase any chance of getting shallow DOP. Cramming pixels in. It's a silly format when full frame and aps-c are readily available. We're a handful of years away, but affordable larger sensors aren't that far off. This is a pointless format.

Larger sensor = large lenses. How much shallow DOF do you need? There comes a point when it just looks silly to have the background so blurred out. Micro 4/3 has its uses just as full frame has its uses. Unless you exclusively shoot night or indoor lowlight, it's not a bad option.

@@elliegrace6410 wrong. Nobody said you need shallow DOF... ya, sometimes it does look silly. So stop down your aperture. Micro 4/3 has it's uses, just like an iphone camera has it's uses. (and you're wrong... larger sensors do not take larger lenses. There's plenty of pancake and small lenses on full frame and APS-C) Why not go smaller than Micro 4/3 if smaller sensor is better?
