Great conversation as always! I got into 4/3 after reading a detailed review in a French photography magazine comparing all systems available in 2007. I became convinced about the merits of a telecentric system designed from the ground up for digital, without any regard to legacy lenses. This was the burden Canon and Nikon had to deal with, forcing them to stick to the so-called full-frame sensor, which produces the types of optical distortions we never see in 4/3 (and now micro four thirds). Then the mirror disappeared with the EP-1, eventually the EM-5 was released and I got rid of all my previous 4/3 bodies, while keeping three of my best lenses (the 50-200 SWD, the 7-14mm ED and the 12-60mm SWD). Zooming back to the present, I am enjoying greatly my OM-1 Mk II and my OM-5, while keeping my Pen-f, which I'll never ever sell.

Nikon Z mount and Canon RF mount are completely new mounts. Nikon Z mount has the shortest flange range that can theoretically support the RF and Sony E- mount. As a matter of fact there is a E to Z mount adapter for autofocus e mount lenses.

Indeed… but you see, Olympus and Panasonic did this back in 2009. It took the leading brands a long time to catch up with the innovators! 😅

@@federicoalberto66 Long time? Took them six years from 2018 till 2024 to have everything Panasonic and Olympus created in more then 10 years. IBIS. handheld High Res, 4k60p uncropped all have been done by Nikon , Canon and Sony. Internal RAW recording with 60p 4K has been done by Nikon in Z9, Z8, and Z6 III. High Res with motion correction has been done by Nikon, Sony and Fuji. Om System has not brought anything new the last 4 years. All this innovations has not get them even a meningfull marketshare, which et Olympus to ditch tehir imaging division.

Great talk! Thanks to both of you for your insights. I am waiting with bated breath for the speculated announcement of a new camera from OM System (Olympus) before the end of this year - if rumours are true…

At 1:13:40 Rod discussed a point I made about the Nikon, Canon and Sony lenses in the 180 - 800 ranges they released. Rod said that the consumer lenses of this FF is not at the same level as the m43 pro. Problem is that the consumer lens in FF like the sigma 150 - 600 mm in FF is the same in m43 but twice the price. So I don’t get the advantage or value propositions of m43 for the birder and wildlife users.

This was a very interesting chat. I'm an enthusiast and lucky enough to have a sufficient budget to use two systems, I have a Pen-F and an OM-1ii which I use for street and wildlife photography and I also own a Pentax K3iii and a K1 for landscape and portrait shooting. I got into MFT mainly for wildlife and action photography, I love the sophisticated computational abilities and portability but I can't see me abandoning Pentax which I use for low light and landscapes, I am just too familiar with the superb K series optical viewfinders.

I never quite get why people complain about menu systems so much....once you've been through it you shouldn't need it again...at least not on a regular basis.

I bought an E-M5iii a couple of months ago because I wanted to get a NEW camera that still had the Olympus name while I could still find one.

As for the reason for moving to micro four thirds, you actually did mention it in your conversation: basically, it was urgent to downsize the lenses to capitalize on the advantages of having a smaller sensor. This was made possible by getting rid of the mirror and thus reducing of the flange distance between lenses and the sensor. Et voilà! Since then no other camera system comes close with respect to lens size for the aperture and the resolution we can achieve with even the cheapest of the lenses available, not to mention the pro line or the Leica/Panasonic range.

The four thirds dslr cameras were just the same sensor size as M43...The Olympus Cameras just lost the mirrors to become M43.

I would really hope for a surprise from OM System. A major rerelease of the PEN-system. OM PEN-F2, OM PEN-P8, OM PEN-M3 release at the same day, together with three or four weathersealed compact lenses, including atleast two EZ-pancake lenses with reasonable good optical quality. I want style, colours, and fashion gears, aswell as quality and decent price.

By the wayYou get the picture with the names. F, is F, P8 is a light updated PEN-P7 with new menu system. M3 is the follow up on PEN-PM2. And hopefully soon an PEN-V series that is a video and vlogging series. That would be so super. The compactness together with the IBIS is perfect for vlogging camera system.

1:40:15 re possibility of discontinuing lens. If I buy an OM-1 today, it will last for 20 years. I own an f1.2 17mm lens and it will last forever. If OM stop making 17mm lenses today, what do I lose? Nothing really, my gear will still work just fine. I don't feel left out with the marketing focus on wildlife photography.

Whilst I am a long standing Olympus / OMD / MFT system user, I do question the long term viability of the brand and the MFT market, purely on current commercials. Global annual ILC sales are c 8M units for all manufacturers with Canon reported at 3.5M units (46%) and OMD at 250,000 units (3.5%). At these sales levels I doubt OMD Systems have the revenue to carry out extensive model development, hence the current approach with minor model itterations. Even Panasonic, that has the benefit of being in both the MFT and Full Frame camps (and working with Leica), only has a 4.5% market share. As discussed in your vlog, OMD can only continue the current strategy for short period of time as new consumers will find it difficult to justify an expensive purchase from a very niche brand ......unless your brand is Leica!

Exactly. I found that Jimmy didn’t want to focus on this point. Seem he didn’t want to go into a details discussion about this most important aspect. OM Digital Solutions without the help from some other company cannot sustain this strategy on the long run. If you could have seen in the chat I have pointed this many times, but clearly Jimmy didn’t want to go into this discussion. He never wanted to discuss the Birds and Wildlife strategy, comparing the other competitors like Sony, Nikon, Canon and Fuji that has also camera and lenses targeting birding and wildlife. The price/ performance of the other competitors are also a factor that despite I pointed this many times it was not discussed. Rod went to discuss the old discussion of comparing system. But this was not my point but more the price/ performance advantage the other systems has on m43, which will lead new user to enter the other system then m43. Having lenses at €7500 and €2700 is not cheap for new users. Canon has 200 - 800mm and Nikon has 180 - 600mm al around €2000 so cheaper then m43. Rod went into this argument pointed that you cannot compare pro lenses in m43 with enthusiast lenses in ff. I replied in the chat that wildlife photographers like Jeremy Neipp, Duade Paton and others tested those Nikon and Canon and found them very good for the price. They also reviewed the m43 OM lenses and found them good but pricey. My point was that Nikon, Sony and Canon on the long run can get most birders and wildlife photographer in their system then m43.

I was exclusively a Nikon DSLR photographer until mid 2023. I wanted to get into mirrorless but the Nikon Z line is too expensive IMO. I found used Olympus / OMDS gear to be small, powerful, well-built, and fun to use. The lens library was mature, small, and relatively less expensive than FF and APS-C lenses. I jumped in with a used E-Miii and 12-40 f2.8. I was so impressed that GAS set in and I bought a Pen-F, OM-1, E-PL9, E-M5ii, and E-P5. I have most of the primes and zooms. All bought used sans the 40-150 f4. Crazy amount of GAS, but I love it all and I try to take photos as often as I can. I'd have to say that camera gear from the last 5-10 years is fantastic. I'm addicted to shopping for deals on MPB, KEH, and eBay. I really don't see new gear as worth the price. Just wait a few years and you can get amazing gear at a fraction of the price on the used gear market. The other game changer for me is AI enhanced post processing. I used to hate post processing. Now I love it. DXO's PhotoLab 7 has completely changed how I view post processing. It is no longer drudgery with mediocre results. DXO PL is fun and I get great results very easily.

If one needs to shoot High ISO on occasion...Than just keep a second hand A7s...(I do just that)..used A7s runs less than $450 here in Bangkok. By the way I have never had a problem with Dynamic range on the several EOS RP cameras I have owned... Now days my full frame gear includes mostly Sony gear.....but... at 71 years of age the M43 gear is my main go to gear for Bangkok street. By the way for me...big lenses have always required two hands...I regularily used penF and GX9 bodies with big lenses with absolutely no problems. I just do not understand the comments made by some that big lenses become "unbalanced" with smaller "rangefinder" style bodies....Just my rant...Cheers.

The whole discussion about sensor formats in reality just boils down to DOF. At the moment, we're in the height of bokeh epidemic - once that look starts falling out of fashion, we'll see a resurgence of interest in m43. If you post your work on the internet, or even do pretty large prints, there's no discernible difference between the formats. It's visible only while pixel-peeping. I bought my f/1.2 primes a while back, and I got bored with the "don't worry about composition, just blur the background" way of shooting pretty fast. Also, the way people calculate equivalency is pretty funny. No, a 600mm f/8 FF lens is not the same as 300mm f/4 m43 :) Exposure triangle and phase detect autofocus care about the actual aperture, not the one calculated from crop factor.
