I am a bird photographer. The two most important features are one, auto focus and two, frame rate. The OM1 is very good in the first, and outstanding in the second. The usable frame rate at 50 frames per second allows me to see things that I would otherwise miss.

Most important camera attributes for me. First, is definitely how it interfaces with me. If the camera works like an extension of my hand and eye, then I will pick it up regularly, and enjoy the experience. Frankly, this is the main reason why I am so loyal to the Olympus/OMDS brand. Their cameras just seem to work naturally, and easily for me. Their light weight, ergonomic design, and intelligent interface layout don't get in the way of my usage; Second, is reliability. Actually, this is probably tied for first. It is absolutely essential that my gear work reliably every time. This is another reason why I am so loyal to Olympus. Their cameras have been consistently solid in that regard; Third, is lens selection and image quality. Honestly, these kind of go hand in hand. You can't get good images without good glass. That said, with good glass, pretty much any camera by any manufacturer can produce excellent images. The differences between brands and models when fitted with a good lens is pretty negligible in real world situations, which is why this is only number three on my list. That said, Olympus offers an excellent range of superb optics which makes their system even more compelling, especially when you compare the prices of good quality "full frame" lenses. They are so pricey as to almost rule themselves out of the contest in some cases. Well, that's about it for me.

WOW! Peter! I finally have someone who explains why having 2 identical cameras is important. I have the EM1X and had the EM1 Mkii, so I purchased another EM1X so I could have identical cameras, and have the same setups and have no brain power working to think about the settings, and especially the buttons. I also like two cams because I go into nasty dirty dusty environments and have two lenses already mounted and no worries about changing lenses. I also setup one camera, then save the settings and write to the second camera. I also put a small yellow sticky inside the rear LCD to tell me what each C setting is, very helpful. And then the cameras are named X1, and X2, same with the SD cards in camera. That helps when downloading the photographs. I keep separate Lightroom catalogs for each X. I rekon that is my short primer for 2 identical cams:) Cheers!

I am actually glad that OM System stayed at 20 MP with this camera's sensor. The plain physics of digital photography dictate that as long as you are incorporating a Bayer array, increasing the pixel/area ratio also increases the low-light color noise, all other things remaining constant. That has always been my biggest challenge with m4/3 (and 4/3) photography, especially when shooting at night. Almost all of the prints that I sell are 16x20 and even with significant cropping, 20 MP has produced perfectly crisp images. Perhaps if I was going as large as 24x30 prints, those 20 MP images might become an issue, but even then the resolution of a print that large would still be far more detailed than what I ever produced back when I was printing from 35mm film.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and impressions Peter. In regard to image quality at high ISO's, there is a definite and obvious improvement in my opinion. I recently compared the studio scene sample images from the OM-1 and the new Canon R7 over on the Imaging Resource site. At every ISO up to and including ISO 25600, the OM-1 shows clearly better results in both noise handling and image detail. The R7 is a less expensive camera, but it is also an APS-C sensor and one of Canon's latest cameras. Also, thanks for explaining why you 'need' two OM-1's. Many people don't understand the importance of having two cameras with the same settings, controls, ergonomics, and menu system when you are shooting professionally. I shot weddings and corporate events professionally up until 2020, and always had two of the same camera bodies. As hectic and fast paced as events can be, the last thing a professional needs is to grab a second body and have to remember where controls are, or how to change an important setting.
@Centauri27
@Centauri27 Жыл бұрын
Very interesting point about the R7 comparison, Greg. I guess this bodes well for the upcoming E-M5 camera that's supposed to be released this month! It has the same sensor at the OM-1, so you will have APSC quality images at a consumer friendly price point.

This camera will put OM back up with the leaders as far as video specs and sensor specs. Not that there was much wrong with its predecessor. The video specs in particular are useful for professional videographers. As far as sensor size goes, 20 megapixels surpasses 35mm film resolution and is more than enough to fit on a 65inch UHD screen. The data and processing requirements for this size image are also manageable for my current home setup as an amateur photographer. So in that respect I do not want or require larger images. I will probably start saving up to get an OM1.
@markusbolliger1527

I agree - ergonomics and usability are the most important aspects of a camera to me - given that the image quality is also okay. Bigger sensors and more pixels are always better, but not always necessary. A bigger sensor captures more light, and if you have more pixels you can crop more and there are more details in the image. Noise is not worse with more pixels, as many think, because the file doesn't need to be enlarged as much as a file with less pixels. MfT is good enough for nearly everything, but I give it up in favour of a Nikon Z full frame system which produces cleaner files and gives me a wider latitude in post processing.

It's only a few years ago when we though a 5 or 8 megapixel image was a huge deal. Most photojournalists made the leap to digital when 1mpg images became possible around the late '90s. Local community colleges stopped teaching film photography when 12mpg was pretty much the standard (although that seems to be making a bit of a comeback; Not unlike vinyl recordings). There have been so many print comparisons in onlne forums and, invariably, even the experts usually can't tell the difference without intense pixel-peeping. 20mpg is plenty unless your printing billboards and it's kind of a sweet spot. Every camera out there today is capable of doing some pretty amazing stuff in the right hands and, for me, the deal breaker is, simply, how does the camera feel in MY hands? This is why I've stuck with Olympus since i jumped to digital from film almost 20 years ago and this is why I'm adding the OM-1to my collection now.

It was fantastic to use, better grip, better battery life, bird detect, beautifully made etc, but three weeks ago it started playing up, wouldn't start, when did the autofocus was intermittent then the lcd screen started to play eg only showing vertical close spaced lines, ti is in the hands of Olympus Technicians here in New Zealand, at the moment I am very disappointed with the short amount of time I have been able to use it before breaking down ! YES, HANDLING AND USABILITY is very important - you can say this produces SYMPATHY to a camera. On the OMD 1 + 2 I've often have complications with the menue and settings. So it's good news if this is better now. Second is important the pure quality of pictures. You show us in one of your earlier videos, that in OM1 there is a leap in quality. Conclusion: if I had the money, I would buy the OM1. In future I will save money and sell my both older Olympus... so I hope to afford in 2024🐿️

Thank you for making this! I've gotten to finally play with the OM-1! I love a lot about it including the handling! The biggest thing for me that I was worried about was if they strayed too far from the E-m1 and I'm just glad they didn't. I do find that it's is actually a bit bigger if you're holding it for hours. I find that the slightly bigger grip adds just a slight amount more stress on my fingers. Not much but it's definitely there. I also find that I don't like the recessed dials. The slight slant and exterior dials on the E-M1.2/3 body is definitely easier for me to handle. However, this is most likely because I have used the E-M1.2 since 2016-17. Performance wise, I do find it much much faster than the E-M1.2. I'm able to get through my jobs faster! Live Comp is something I use weekly and the OM-1 processes it SO QUICKLY! I also find that the faster processing of the HHHR makes it better with flashes as well, the sync speed is faster with High Res mode now I no longer have to carry an extra light to compensate when using High Res mode for product shots.

Focus is my number one priority. Nothing else matters if you can’t nail the focus. I have the EM1.2, which I really like, and I shot with the EMX. The focus system for action simply does not compare with any of the recent Canon, Nikon or Sony cameras I have owned. I find it hard to judge reviewer opinions on AF, as they rarely compare to the best, like my Sony A1. This feature always seems to get over hyped on Olympus cameras. Maybe the OM1 has closed the gap. I’m interested to hear from someone that also shoots with an R5, A1 or Z9. I’m not expecting parity, given the cost difference. What I love about the Olympus cameras is the weight with lenses and the superb ergonomics for focus stacking. Cheers.

Agree this on EM1.2. Always felt AF is randomly there when shooting fast mountainbiking in woods. No nailing and very often busted hi ISO for ETTR. Imo this AF&hiISO together is very limiting in action shooting when in the woods or dim light. So even if there is nailed shot there is hiISO to deal with. I know you can buy a one more software for noise but it is NOT my way what comes algorithms on picture and my photography. Also like ergonomics and I think it is more needed for BIF with tele.

Regarding megapixels, I think it would be nice for composition since it makes cropping more merciful but isn't entirely necessary. My interest with the OM-1 is how the new stacked sensor will develop. Its appearance is essentially a herald for some really exciting developments to be done in the next couple of years. I for one would leap at the chance to get an improved Pen camera if they released one once the sensor matures a little. Would also like to see third-party lens makers like tamron take an interest in MFT a lil more so we could have some more budget options. OM glass is amazing but can be a little prohibitive in cost at the greater zoom ranges for hobbyists.

Hello Peter. I worked 45 years as a professional Photographer with two systems. First 25 years Nikon. In the late nineties I had to switch to Canon because They came with digital cameras. Nikon also tried but they lost it with bad camera's and bad quality. I worked about 15 years with EOS 1D(16 MP) and Canon EOS ds(mark11 and 111) (20 mp 7900 euro. a lot of money). Now I see the discussions about sensors, dynamic range and so on. I never had clients who asked me that. . They only looked to the quality of the pictures, Since 3 month I make pictures with a DJI Mini 3 drone. The quality of such a little camera with such a little sensor is amazing. Now I am investing in a Micro Four Third system. OM-systems seems my favorite. Why, because the quality of the body and pictures, the compact lenses, the autofocus system etc. The technical revolution of electronic camera's is so fast that investing in a very expensive system(Canon, Nikon and Sony high end) is not responsible. The OM1-system is the only high end professional system on the market for a responsible price. I would like that the OM DE M1X in 2023 can get the specifications of the OM 1 because the body and weight fits more for my professional use. Nobody can give me an answer what OM-stems is going to do with that body. When not, I am going for the OM 1 with battery holder 24-40 2.8 pro for daily work , 50-150 2.8 pro for sports etc). What is the most important thing I look for in a camera (from your question at 6:00): contrast AF that works well in video without a face to track, lower / natural indoor light performance. Ergonomics cease to matter if the camera's electronics struggle to get the video and shots I'm after (struggling with focus, and noisy capture), even if the camera is comfortable to hold, and it is easy to adjust its settings. Although your point is well taken (about comfort and intuitive controls and menus), I'm willing to endure a bit of struggle if it means I end up with electronics that I can depend on to capture the shot I took at exactly the right moment, and at precisely the correct angle or panning movement. If it's noisy or out of focus, the fact it was comfortable to hold isn't worth anything. Edit: The focus drift at 11:57 (your face is goes out of focus, and stays out of focus) is something I can't tolerate, and that's a perfect example of a hard fail for a camera for my use-case. By 12:18, the trees in the background are in perfect focus, but your face is not. Which camera was this shot with BTW? Sorry if I missed it and you mentioned that already.

Peter, I basically agree with everything you said . I use the OM 1 now for approximately 40 days. I can easily compare the OM 1 to my E-M1 III which I still use when i am lazy to change lenses. The reason I bought the OM 1 are the numerous slight improvements ( new sensor, AF, noise etc. ), but most important to me was the higher speed for High res and focus stacking handheld. With the E.M1 mk 3 I could already get some very good results, but if there is some wind or insects are moving it is better when 10 to 15 images are taken as fast as possible. Here the OM1 really shines. What concerns the image quality it is very comparable to my E-M1 mark 2 and mark 3. At least I cannot see any major difference.

@@dafyddmills6659 I disagree on that. I know the pros and cons of the different formats and I shot FF during the film days. Photography of wildlife, especially of birds in flight with the new light gear of MFT is just another type of photography, how you - as a photographer - can react quickly to the situations in nature, which is only possible with light weight gear. In addition to excellent tech such as OM-1 combined with the 150-400/4.5 Pro. See e.g. Mike Lanes competition of the OM-1 with Sony Alpha A1. for bird photography. A honest trial. Finally , Mike have chosen the OM-1. He just liked to shoot with it more and with more pleasure (besides of all the tech comparisons he made; for him both systems are in the same "league") This might not be the case for all photographers. When a toddler for example stands in front of me and an adult faaaar in the background... the AI takes the adult into focus who stands meters behind the child. What's fine for you might not be fine for me. Also, a revised menu system takes time to get to know and setup. Sticking with what you already have/know is much easier for those of us who want to use our cameras instead of playing with them. I'm looking forward to your next video. Excellent reflections as usual. for me a camera must be ergonomic and have high operating speed. (I can't wait for electronics). Excellent choice not to increase the resolution. 20 megapixels is already enough for such a small sensor. In my opinion it was also fine with 16mp. i print 30x45cm with a 12mp fullframe. By now Today all the cameras have excellent photographic quality and even exaggerated bursts. (does a sports photographer really need more than ten fps)

I’ve always used two bodies (which is easy to do with m4/3) because I don’t like changing lenses in the field. However, the button placement on the em1 mk1 and em1 mk2 are annoyingly different. Two identical bodies makes for a more fluid operation. Good you got hold of two OM1’s before stocks ran out.

Interesting experiences. Some comments/questions... 1. I've had the reported problems with eye/face detection, too. 2. In addition, I also had problems with the EM-1.iii in that eye/face detection "detected" faces where there were none, e.g., based on some pattern in trees. 3. My temporary solution to #2 has been to set up the AE-ON button to *not* use eye/face detection, while the shutter release button uses eye/face detection. This way, I can focus without eye/face detection when the algorithm gets into trouble. 4. Your comment kind of "ruins" my solution... if I need to set up the entire sensor as focus area in order to get eye/face detection to work, I guess the same focus area is used with AE-ON... The same problem would be there if I program another button to toggle eye/face detection, because one would also need to change the focus area (+ change to C-AF?) 5. If my understanding is correct, the best choice would probably be to use one of the Custom modes (e.g., C1) for eye detection?? 6. Also, I don't quite understand why eye/face detection is not categorized as one of the Subject Detection modes. That way, we could toggle Subject Detection by a programmed button, and use hold+rotate the back wheel to choose which mode to use. I don't know if I have properly understood this, though, but am curious about your thoughts.

Good points. I have set up C2 to use face/eye priority. C1 is for everyday photography and face/eye priority is off. I think the eye and face priority is not in Subject recognition because face and Eye priority has been in Olympus cameras for years.
@blie8767

@@ForsgardPeter I think you are right wrt. why eye priority has not been grouped with Subject recognition. Still, I think that *logically*, it belongs with Subject recognition -- and that would also make the OM-1 simpler to set up. On the other hand -- perhaps it is simpler to move the new menu system to older cameras if they keep eye priority as a separate choice.

I agree that handling and ergonomics in general are two of the most important things in a camera body for me. While I trust the Olympus ergonomics, for my first mirrorless Olympus I chose the OM-D E-M1X strictly because I knew the ergonomics would work for me. Prior to that I only used an E420 which handled like a charm for me. I know for a fact that handling is so important to me because I mostly shoot Nikon and my Olympus gear is mostly used as a means to break the routine and get a different inspiration; however, I have an exceptionally well specced body (Z7II) but the handling just doesn't work for me for some reason so the body is collecting dust. People seem to be big on AF and AF tracking these days which is something I don't even think about when I purchase a camera, and in terms of image quality, I still like the results I get from the E420 and I'm much more happy to carry it around and shoot with it all day rather than shooting with the much more advanced Z7II just for the sake of ergonomics! So, I guess we are very much alike in this respect.

I find that handling is unique to just about every camera Ihave used. I’ve adapted to all of them over the years, and the favorite is always the LAST one. ProCapture is a bit attraction for me, and IS is really important. Third for me is autofocus (I’m not getting any younger).

As a bird photographer for the last 10 years I never needed frame rate more than 10 frames per second. So the new 50 f/s in the OM-1 is not important for me. I don't care for the 60fr/s in 4K video as well. I thing 30f/s is enough. If I buy camera for video I would buy GH6. The AF is the only good reason to buy that camera. But Olympus firmware update adds bird detection AF to the flagship E-M1X which has a pretty decent autofocus already and a dual battery that works as one. 2500 shots without changing the battery plus the ability to use 2 fast UHS-II cards tipped the scales to cancel the order for OM-1 which I have been waiting for since March and I would wait at least until the end of June. And ordered E-M1X. I was lucky enough to buy it for only $ 1060 from Ebay on 9000 shots alone. Separately, this deal saved me $ 1,100 not to buy the $2200 OM-1. Tomorrow I will have the opportunity to test it and I hope will work well with the Olympus 300mm F4 + 1.4TC lens mainly for wildlife photography. I can also make a video here on KZfaq for comparison with my Canon 5DS and 400mm F4 DO IS II USM + 1.4 TC lens which is absolutely equal to the magnification of the M 4/3 configuration. If I have a decent result from the more compact M 4/3 configuration I can switch from Canon to it.

@@ForsgardPeter It's good to know. I just like the look and feel on the E-M1X. If I order battery grip for the OM-1 which is only an available backorder of course and that adds me another $ 350. Extra battery and we go to $ 2650 for the OM-1. Nearly $ 1,600 more than I currently have for the E-M1X. And by the way, today I tested it, the camera works amazingly for me. As the video by hand with amazing stabilization and for BF the AF works really well with the new bird detection mode. I know the OM-1 may be better in AF performance but the E-M1X is enough for my needs. Not to mention that after the sale of canon lenses and cameras I will get back another $ 6000- $ 7000 :). From the videos I've seen on KZfaq I think the autofocus of the OM-1 looks far superior to the G9. I think even with my Leica lenses, 100-400mm and 12-60mm it should be superior to the G9. My olympus 60mm macro would probably be a little nicer on the OM-1 as well. Very good video, thank you for such an in depth review.

Another great video! Still hoping for a new OM5 with stacked sensor though :D As for 24 or 26 MP... I doubt most MFT lenses are really designed for this very dense amount of megapixels. For me it would not really worth the additional cost for lenses & camera. It sounds a lot but I usually don't see that much of a difference on other cameras. Of course the difference usually gets obvious around 30+ MP but I don't think that would be the right direction for MFT. As for H265... I've come to like this codec (so much more compact than prores and quite flexible). It's great that it's also included here, but it's definitely not the easiest format to edit even on a good PC (of course it also depends on the hardware setup)

@@matttheking1655 The GH6 is marketed towards people wanting optimum video imaging. But, if you're shooting video with a 16:9 aspect ratio, you're losing 25% of the sensor area on a M4/3 camera, unless you are using an anamorphic lens. Those additional MPs are useful for recording widescreen images. The OM-1, while quite competent at shooting video, is first aimed at still photography, where there are certain advantages to lower pixel density.

I know that a lot of people think this doesn't matter that much, and in many ways I agree but I would like to see a 43 megapixel om systems camera. I am very happy with my 20 megapixel E-M1 iii. If an OM-1X (E-M1X ii) came out with 40+ megapixel, I would be willing to spend $3000+ for it. That being said, I think this is where OM needs to go. If they want to become one of the most sought after nature wildlife cameras, they will do 3 things to compete with Sony/Canon/Nikon: 1) Keep the similar performance to OM-1 (maybe 24 frames per second would suffice), 2) bump the megapixels to compete with the R5, and 3) put a big emphasis on video features. Look, I am extremely happy with what I have, but I want my investment to keep winning financially, and imagine how many people would prefer the lightweight portability of micro 4/3, but the detail and flexibility of having larger files for cropping, and higher res video and/or more video fidelity: i think this is the winning formula for OM, and micro 4/3 as a whole

Taking several hundred photos when I am out and about makes it easy for me not to have to worry later on about my memory of the photos that were taken from, plus it provides me with the details if I am off the beaten path to go back with no issues. I read in a review that the OM-1's viewfinder is worse for eyeglass wearers because of the higher magnification. The viewfinder of the E-M1lll is more comfortable and you can see the corners of the image better when shooting with glasses. Is that true?

I have not really found any problems. Maybe I am so used to it? It is always a bit harder to see the whole area with glasses on.

Hi Peter. I'm really enjoying the OM1. Overall it's a better Camera than the em1iii, but there are things I prefer on the old Camera. The front and rear control wheels were MUCH better and better positioned. The OM1 display has already lost the “click” when closed and opens by itself in the backpack, which can be a risk. The improvement in image quality is there, but I would have liked to have seen a better low light capability, because it's a BSI sensor and because they kept the 20mp. The battery cover seems to be of lower quality plastic (not a big problem), but over time I've had the impression that the em1iii is more robust and with a better quality feeling in the material. But that's it. Otherwise, I'm really curious if we'll have big FW Updates with improvements for both Cameras. The em1iii NEEDS to receive a major FW Update, and the OM1 has many aspects that could be improved, especially in the AF performance.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 2 жыл бұрын
The lack of display "click" is something I did not notice, but you have a point.
@TITAOSTEIN
@TITAOSTEIN 2 жыл бұрын
@@ForsgardPeter It's not the lack of the “click” (or safety lock) because the lock is there. But it just stopped to work properly as the plastic deteriorated in 1 month of use. It is really not a big deal, but the display opens by itself in the Bag… On the em1iii the display stays absolutely closed and there is no risk of opening while walking. I believe it is just a small defect in my Camera.

I use aperture priority most of the time and "drive" the camera by changing aperture, ISO and exposure compensation. It's therefore essential for me that these three things are easy to do, which they are on my 3 Olympuses. Peter, do you use high resolution mode, which I think goes up to 80 pixels?

Hi Peter, I'm confused as on a few reviews (or comment sections), people are stating that noise levels look very similar to the E-M1 Mark III, then they add that noise is much more easily reduced in post - probably a different grain structure or pattern, I don't know, or perhaps the improved DR helps in having less noise in the shadow areas etc. Do you have any take on this? If confirmed, perhaps the noise performance at high iso has actually improved quite a lot (though not really a 2 stops improvement as claimed initially).

@ForsgardPeter

I have not even opened the shoulder strap package. There are two reasons I do not use them. First I mostly use wrist strap and the shoulder strap screams the brand. Not that I mind, but it shines and draws attention to the camera. That is something I do not want when going out and photograph.

Does anyone here (Peter?) know where I can get some sample OM-Log400 footage, preferably from the OM-1, straight-out-of-camera, for trying out the three different methods I know about to convert OM-Log400 to Rec.709? (I learned the three methods from Roger of Finland, Etchd Photography, and Cullen Kelly, a pro colorist who gave advice in one of his Q&A videos on how to handle log footage from cameras that the manufacturer does not supply a color profile for --- I don't mean a LUT, I mean real color management.)

I currently own the E-M1x and have several Panasonic lenses that I love -- and that function fine. The big issue is that there will be some features such as Synch IS, Pro Capture HIgh CAF, and Focus Stacking that will only work with Olympus lenses.
